Skatiechik

I can't see one, but a revamp would be nice. I have suggested a few ideas in the past myself.

scottf
07-12-2005, 11:18

it says - "This new year brings us a new sheffield forum"

then it flashes to another bit that reads

"dun...dun...derrrr (thats dramatic music)"

lol!!! :D :D

The new Mods will, of course, undergo extensive training looking after the Goldthorpe Forum...... :)

I gather soem changes are afoot to make some improvements, but it really is a case of 'watch this space'.

Suggestions that I've received over the last year have been sent on to Geoff - some may not be implemented this time around BUT they're all in the pile.

I visit a IPB-based forum and it's awful with the 'bulk' look of it - maybe switch to the vBulletin later version, but I do believe that would incur a major price issue.

The last design-based change I remember was in late-2004.

£17 to upgrade VBbulletin how will Geoff cope :o (Once you have bought the licence, then purchasing upgrades/support is nominal). As for IPB, why go backwards? VB is the best known forum software this is avaliable.

Lets hope we get VB3.5.

There ain't no bulk in IPB ^_^

You can switch most of it off, which is the biggest advantage of IPB. It's also much better to moderate and far easier for an admin. I've run UBB, vB, phpBB, and IPB and I've found IPB much easier to use, both as a user and an admin.

I did work for IPS so I could be construed as slightly biased - but I have spent a long time working as community administrator, for my own website and also for EMAP ^_^

Invision = :gag: :gag: . Honnestly, one of the worst around, go phpBB, vB, that's after several years of bulletin board administrating.

JoeP
07-12-2005, 14:51
Of course, given that we have such a large database of users and posts we're hardly going to change horses mid-stream.

I think it highly likely we'll stick with one version or another of vBulletin. Also, we have done some tweaks to the code, so again we'd not necessarily want to lose 'investment'.

There's Tracie, who's a mod, (and an all-round good-egg,)

then there's tracy b .....

We've recently upgraded to vB 3.5 and i've never had it so easy 8)
IPB just doesn't cut it IMO. There's no where near as many options when wanting to grant permissions etc :(
phpBB2 is left lagging behind vBulletin as well. I'm playing with a phpBB2 forum right now and i'll have to add loads of hacks to get it any where near as configurable as vBulletin :?

We choose new Mods when we need them.

We don't take nominations.

What does happen is that we look at people in terms of their attitude and behaviour on the Forum.

We also apply the rule that was used in The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy with regard to the job of Galactic President. :D

Just realised that it's the week of the upgrade, and the possible 24 hour downtime. Joe's original announcement stated that we would be kept informed (well, that's how I read it anyway).

So Mods/Admin, do you have any news for us?

Tony
09-01-2006, 08:50
Nope, sorry.

It will happen when it happens because of the nature of these things. We usually try to do maintenance in the small hours, but that isn't always possible.

For obvious reasons, the outage will be as short as possible.

Hi all,

In the week of January 8th to January 15th, 2006, Sheffield Forum will be offline for up to 24 hours to allow software upgrades to be carried out.

We'll give further notice when things are finalised, but you can expect up to 24 hours of 'outage' during this period.

Thanks,

Admin Team

Have I missed something?
