View Full Version : Motivation when trying to lose weight
How do you guys keep motivated to lose weight?
Sure there are clubs etc but they aren't really an option for a few reasons (cost, time). How do you persuade yourself not to eat that cake/drink that beer or go for a run?
As much as I tell myself during the day I will go for a run tonight, it never seems to happen lately. Even with an entry to a marathon in the pipeline!
Last year or two I seem to have lost all my get up and go (it got up and went without me :( ) so now I struggle to get out the door for a run/bike ride. I'm trying to get back to a 100 push up routine I was half way through a couple of months back but even that only takes 10 minutes 3 times a week I don't get it done.
Anyone care to give me a boot?!! :hihi:
take the focus off the losing weight and exercising, and find something that motivates you away from the fridge instead. It doesn't matter what that hobby is (though walking rescue dogs would be a great option ;) ), as the sense of achievement is a distraction from the comfort eating that accompanies the lack of get up and go
GhiaGirl 12-04-2011, 20:42 If I feel like snacking i've started to drink water instead. A bottle helps as i can carry it around with me.
Can you not arrange to meet someone for a run once a week. That way if you don't go you'd be letting someone else down too. That should give you the motivation to go?
oldskater 12-04-2011, 21:10 my motivation is easy.
i look around me at all the obese and unfit people sweating to stand up.
i dont need any more than that to stop me becoming like them
candybox 13-04-2011, 09:10 My motivation is always something specific like going away with a large group of friends and getting "bikini fear" LOL. Also, don't have the tempting food in the house, if you don't buy it you can't be tempted by it in a weak moment. Understand that may be difficult though depending on who you live with.
To make myself go to the gym I have to get up in the morning and put my gym shorts and sports bra on underneath my clothes to make the commitment to going. I find it almost impossible to make myself get my stuff together and get out of the house if I've put my dressing gown on when I get up or if I've got dressed properly in normal clothes.
Of course, this is paired with knowing that I can't change into clothes I like or whatever until I've sweated all over the gym stuff and had a shower.
Dunno why this works for me, but it does, so I'm not questioning it.
As for the overall motivation for weight loss, I'm regarding this as a way to even up the scales for 15 years of not working off the cake that I've been eating, so on leaving the gym I can say to myself 'that's another cake paid for'. It's taken 15 years for the weight to go on, so that's an awful lot of cakes I've had on 'calorie credit' that need paying for one by one.
I also can't leave the gym until I've seen 600 calories (minimum) go past on the counters, although usually I get further than that.
We all have little rules for this sort of thing. Mine also include making myself go to the gym in the morning because I find it really hard to make myself go when I've already started the rest of the day properly.
gina2007 13-04-2011, 14:05 My motivation is im seeing Lee Evans later this year and ive got excellent seats - he will rip me to pieces for being the lardy one!
My motivation other than that is im going on holiday, not til sept 2012 but do I heck as like want to sit in the seat on a plane for hours and hours being a size 18 and feeling out of place when we get there! Its not just spain or turkey its Florida, and im determined im going there, slim [or atleast slimmer] and fitter!
The Blonde 17-04-2011, 17:34 I have no motivation any more. I don't need to lose lots, but I can't be bothered any more. Too tired and I get bored that I don't get immediate results hehe
Then take a break and come back to it when you have more will power. There's no point in not doing it properly and then having the guilt of 'failing' to hit yourself with is there?
sunny_Girl 19-04-2011, 12:49 it's enough for me to look in the mirror... I hate my body and this motivates me to lose weight and get in shape as soon as possible
You'd think that entering the ballot for the London Marathon the last 5 years would be some motivation, if progress in my sport wasn't but that doesn't seem to do it either :/
that only starts to work after you've developed your addiction to adrenaline ;)

Never compare yourself to anyone, plus who says these ''slim'' people are healthy??
*Hipster* 05-05-2011, 20:51 Food wise, if you dont buy it you cant eat it!
Exercise wise, arrange to meet someone else to exercise with - you wouldnt let that person down so would make sure you went!
Also, look at all the chubbers out there and ask do you want to be one of them??!!

Shef_Fitness 24-05-2011, 12:16 Best way to stay motovated
I believe you must see definate results - how can you stay motivated when week after week, you see almost non-exsistant changes?
Enjoy what you do - the activity, or programme has to be something you enjoy. If you enjoy what you do, you are more likely to see results and stick with it
Train/do your activity with others - joining a group where the atmosphere is friendly is also great to stay motovated long term. It should be something you look forward to rather than dread
sustainable over the long term - is it sustainable to cut back on food you enjoy? is it sustainable to cut back on food indefinatly?
You need something that takes as little time as possible - you should not have to spend more than 2 hours per week trying to achieve this goal. The less time spent the better
Never cut back on the things you enjoy - if you enjoy your cake, you should have this.
The key is sustainabilty over the long term. The less time spent, the more enjoyable, the faster the results are all key to success
