View Full Version : Curvy - Nice way of saying you're fat?
climaxchick 06-12-2005, 23:51 Being a bar maid i am taken in by certain conversations people have while sat at the bar sipping on their larger. Some conversations very interesting and some terribly boring, but this one really took me by surprise.
Being a curvy woman myself, i didn't know whether to be offended but from looking at the size of the guy saying that he thought Charlotte Church was fat, i just thought 'who are you to be saying that?' but i couldn't help but ask myself - does that mean i'm fat?
I think women should have a bit of meat on them to grab hold of - its sexy and can be a real turn on. I'm not saying chubby or anything,.... just curvy, a decent bust and a hips (hourglass). For the women who are blessed to have a gorgeous slim figure - good on them, but for some women who are also blessed with a more womanly (in my words - realistic) figure - then does this mean they're fat?
This man really could have offended me, but keeping on the topic of curves and Charlotte Church, again - i do NOT think she is fat by any means.
What do you think about curves? When you describe someone as having curves, it is you just saying that they're fat in a nice way? Or do you think that curves and being fat are 2 different things?
Stephanie
spyro2000 06-12-2005, 23:57 If I was to say someone was curvy, I wouldnt mean they were fat no. If I said it, it would however mean that they have a big bust and behind, but not fat.
If I say curvy, I don't mean someone is fat and i'd rather have a curvy girl than a stick.
If however, I say chubby, lardo or any other derogatory term, then yes, i'm referring to someone being fat
I'd rather see curves than bones any day of the week. But here's a thing ... I'd like to bet that if Charlotte Church:heyhey: came onto this guy, he would soon change his mind about her being "fat".
To me, curvy does not mean fat. The person might be fat as well, but curvy has nothing to do with being fat. No, being described as curvy should be taken as a compliment as having curves is one of the things that makes a woman physically attractive. In fact if your waist to hip ratio is 0.7 then this is perfect, or so research would say:
http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/biology/b103/f01/web1/ekanayake.html
Apparently this ratio is a magic number that people from all cultures find attractive!
Rentaknight 07-12-2005, 04:45 Shouldn't you be at the fridge right now ?
youwhatref 07-12-2005, 05:16 Curvy, is just that. Something more than being slim. I would also refer this to a woman who is slim with a large bust, but generally it is termed at a girl who is little bigger (has a little)
I agree with the others in that curvy/fat are two seperate things and like the rest i wouldn't turn Charlotte Church down! :D
Englishlady 07-12-2005, 06:23 Unfortunately there are alot of men out there who think anything bigger than a size 10 is chubby, usually younger men.
They are as brainwashed as women when it comes to being dictated to as to what is an ideal size for a woman to be.
Just take a look at the so called 'lad's mags' to see what images of women are portrayed as ideal and sexy.
Thankfully the men who've replied so far seem not to have been affected in this way:D
lobster_8 07-12-2005, 07:05 Women come in all sorts of shapes and sizes just the same as men do - so why get hung up on it. Fat probably isn't the worst insult in the world - honest!!
youwhatref 07-12-2005, 07:11 I agree in a way Englishlady but my experience has shown that it is women who put pressure on themselves. Granted there's some guys out there who focus on the model type but even my missus goes on about 'guys and the ideal women - slim, blonde & boobs look' when in reality most guys are attracted to all types
I wonder if Dinp would unse those terms to a persons face or just behind their back?

I think young women think this just as much as young men. I'm sure weight and size is discussed (in a derogative way) more amongst women than it is when men are discussing women.
Tintsexpert 07-12-2005, 08:07 Noyhing beats curves, nugh said!!
evildrneil 07-12-2005, 08:09 Firstly (in response to the question) Curvy is a nice way of saying well curvy - call me old fashioned if you like but I like hips and breasts and curves!!!
Secondly I have to agree with Yodameister and youwhatref in that it seems to be woman who hold up skeletal thinness as an ideal (then blame men for forcing them to be thin!) I know girls in the size 8-10 range who are utterly convinced they are fat and if you hear a group of girls talking in the gym the conversation 9 times out of 10 will be about who is the thinnest
What about "bonny" as a euphomism for fat? A woman in our office was struggling to describe someone and ended up saying "you know, the bonny one" to which the reply was "oh you mean the fat one".
And curvy doesn't mean fat it just means the flesh is adhering to the underlying bone structure - which is only natural.
Curvy is beautiful, fat is less so; I think the difference is all in the distribution. Bodyfat, lets be honest, is what breasts and hips are made of and when it's all curvy and delicious - wahey!
When there's a lack of shapeliness and it's all inthe "wrong" places, not so gorgeous.
Am I the only bloke on here who actually finds a slightly 'pot' belly on a woman attractive? The nicely rounded kind showing under the short top/low jeans kind of thing thats so popular these days.......

I wouldnt say I find a slight pot belly attractive, however it doesnt exactly put me off either.
I dont like skinny women either. If I had to choose between a a really thin woman and a fat woman, id go for fat. Although 'curvy' is perfect.

definately agree on the belly thing - very kissable....mind you flats alright as well....
GoGo_dancer 07-12-2005, 08:31 I think a womans secret weapon is her personality, regardless of her weight.
I have never been bothered about my weight, and I'm a curvy 14. I'm lucky to have a high 50's era waistline and my husband wouldn't have me any other way. In fact I must be one of the very few women who didn't even bother to lose weight for her wedding day! The only thing I did was get my arms toned up.
I'm curvy, and proud of it! It scares me when you see these young girls around town who are scarily skinny.....I always think they look like they need a good meal!
koenigsinger 07-12-2005, 08:37 Curves, bring em on! :D

bigsteve 07-12-2005, 08:40 women are made to have more body fat than men (fact)
most men are attracted to women with large hooters and big bums (fact)
everything else is social conditioning or personal taste.
curvy is usualy related to bums and hooteridge, these are made of fat.
the bloke at the bar is obviously a dick. Charlotte is a babe.
personaly I would'nt look twice at a skinny woman or an onormous one either but all women are different and lovely in there own way. I prefer larger one's but by saying that in a pub situation most blokes would take the p**s.
fern britten = lovely
abbi titmuss = lovely
kate winslet = lovely
Lucy davis = lovely
all these women have been called fat (in the press) or curvy.
p.s Barmaids should be 'curvy'
DaBouncer 07-12-2005, 08:46 I think curvy women are sexy and I don't think curvy would mean fat at all.
Bonny I would also think means similar to curvy and also means good looking (to me any road).
Which bar you work at climaxgirl ;)
To me curves are just that curves, it means not stick thin. Where I come from bonny means pretty. The time I called a colleagues wife "really bonny" took some explaining.
JonJParr 07-12-2005, 09:07 I would actually never say to anyone that they're fat. People that suffer from weight issues have enough to contend with without me making comments about it. I wouldn't describe my partner as stick thin nor would I describe her as curvy - if asked I just say she's "perfect" - which, by the way, she is to me.
(Hint: it's a great way to dodge such loaded questions!)
I agree Climaxchick, curves are extremely sexy on a woman - far more than a stick thin body.

Have you seen Lucy Davis now? She's gone to Hollywood and got all skinny on us. Saw it in a magazine. Can't find a piccy tho. Hmmf.
Kthebean 07-12-2005, 09:46 I think girls pick up the idea that thin = best when they are quite young. It is certainly true that most decent mature men enjoy a woman who is confident with her body no matter what shape it is. But when you're at school things are very different: thin = popular, fat = bullied.
I know its an old cliche but if barbie (and most of the mannaquins in shop windows) were alive at the proportions they are, they wouldn't have enough flesh to support their vital organs!
Add onto that the pervasive hollywood stick thin models, Zoo, Nuts, the Sun (page 3) and all the womens magazines that have "look at how much celulite Gwyneth Paltrow has" articles in them, or that describe J-Lo as a more 'rounded' figure (!) the popularity of porn featuring really thin women, plus the utter bitchiness of many other women, and its no surprise that lots of women are hung up about their weight.
bigsteve 07-12-2005, 09:47 bloody hollywood producers should be shot.

bigsteve 07-12-2005, 09:50 actually kathey theres more demand for porn featuring 'normal looking girls' than for barbie look alikes.
(and that is a proffesional opinion) not just my opinion

I stand corrected.
Also, recently, Simon Cowell told X-Factors Maria she'd have to lose weight if she wanted to do well in the record industry! I mean, how many kids watch that programme?!
bigsteve 07-12-2005, 09:58 theres chance for you yet :heyhey:
Ghosthunter 07-12-2005, 09:58 Everyone have their own idea of a perfect woman.
But the media say its got to be slim women!!
Ignore it and be yourself!
My gf is nice and curvy and i love her!

As should many clothes designers, model agency talent scouts and advertising bookers.
Some folks are fat, others plump, others average - whatever. If they're happy and healthy in their bodies it doesn't matter a jot what anyone else thinks.
Such women will be comfortable and confident with what they have.
Personality and character are what make people attractive, irrespective of sex or looks. But, having said that....
I find stick thin women quite unattractive. I like women to have curves and not have the body of a teenage boy or girl. The fetish with thinness is a relatively recent thing and needs binning as quickly as possible. Designers pandering to it are doing nothing to make women feel attractive; IMHO they're pleasing themselves and the fashion and media establishment rather than making clothes for women.
Breasts, bum and a curvey tummy - excellent!
Joe
bigsteve 07-12-2005, 10:58 well said young man
evildrneil 07-12-2005, 10:59 You just have to look at the evidence:
Curvy Sophie Dahl -> sexy, lush, decadent and gorgeous
Skinny Sophie Dahl -> dull, interchangeable, sexless, unnatractive and forgettable
YAY FOR CURVES!!!!

It's gone the same for men in porn too, normal looking hairy blokes with stubble, bald patches, tattoos and a bit of weight on them are the new big stars. much more so than the skinny, blond, buff, young things or 10 years ago.
(or so I hear, not that I watch porn at all)
curvy is curvy.
I prefer girls who have a full figure. I find that a lot more sexy than a skinny girl.
If you look at personal ad sites girls who are overweight refer to themselves as curvy or curvacious

Good for you Kathy!
My husband calls me chunky, but I know he doesn't mean it in a nasty way and I laugh about it whereas most girls would be crying and screaming 'you think I'm fat!' Get over yourselves!!
The last time I tried to diet, my husband bought me a box of chocolates!!
There have been 3 pages of comments and every one is for curves - hooray for common sense! I have 3 daughters - 2 are between size 8 and 10 and, in my opinion, too skinny. But they wont be told! As they see it, you can never be too thin. My other daughter is a size 18 - again in my opinion - big and beautiful!
Most red blooded men would prefer their women with a bit of meat on their bones. I worked in a pub a year ago, and was told by a lot of men, they prefer bigger women - certainly those with a decent cleavage. It earned me a lot of drinks anyway!

I personally think Dawn French is a very attractive woman for her size too... i feel its all in the way a women dresses and how she carries herself... its not nice to see a woman with all her bulges/tyres hanging out the sides... due to tight clothing... this can appear very ugly making the woman look ugly... whereas if its all hidden under nice clothing it makes a woman look more attractive and appealing to the opposite sex...
I have been told in the past... that i dress suitably for my size & height... :D
I always do my best to look good when i go out... i would hate to think i looked a frump  lol
Curvy = curvy figure... not fat!

Oooh, sharpsinger! I've been looking for a man like you for most of my life!
BTW, I prefer to describe myself as "voluptuous," "zaftig" or "Rubenesque." I could have been a famous model if I'd been born 420 years ago!
Englishlady 07-12-2005, 14:45 Women can be their own and each other's worst enemy.
There is NOTHING like the bitchiness between women at times. They weigh each other up, assesing their attractiveness/size/weight etc. I do think this lessens as women get older, probably because the so called competition isn't as important. Someone once said 'women don't diet for men, they diet for other women' I think this is so true.
But where does this all come from? There is definate pressure from the media.
I once did a project at uni about the influence of magazines on different ages of females.
I was amazed at a magazine called Girl Talk, this mag is aimed at girls under 10 and there were beauty pages in there!!! 'How to keep your skin fresh looking' was the article:loopy:
Earlier this week in The Times there was an article about toys and it mentioned that over 90% of toys aimed at girls between 2 and 10 years old were to do with body image, beauty, sexist roles etc, over 90%!!!!!:loopy:
*Twinkle* 07-12-2005, 14:49 Men who think that women over a size 10 are fat, are not worth giving the time of day. How utterly ridiculous :loopy:
I once heard a young girl in New Look chatting to her Mum... Her Mum suggested that she try a larger pair of trousers on, as the zip didn't do up at the back. She shouted that she wasn't wearing any size 10 clothes because that would mean she was fat!!! :o I don't know where this child has gotten this idea from, however its a ridiculous thing to think and something that I feel, her Mother should have corrected.
Personally, I will always describe myself as curvy. I'm a size 12, which I don't think is fat, I have ample cleavage, hips and a backside. I'm a realistic woman! and you know what... I'm very proud of it too!

This is why i would prefer to be in mens company rather than womens... i feel there is far too much competition between one another... whats she wearing... what does she look like etc... i cant be doing with all that catty bitchiness that goes on... i'd rather go out with the lads and be myself and have fun... not worry about what the other girls might be thinking of me...

Yet on the other hand, I have a friend who always claims that I look better than her. It sounds really big headed of me to mention it on the forum, but its something that does trouble me  I hate to think that she feels thats she doesnt look as "good" as me, or that she feels I outshine her...
I thought she was just being nice at first, but she's said it on numerous occasions and I've not really known how to deal with it  It also troubles me that she's looking at me in a way that she's analysing what I'm wearing/seeing if I look pudgy in a particular skirt etc... I always thought she'd say something like "That skirt doesnt show off your legs" instead of being... well... jealous
So I agree that it is far better to keep male company than that of females... definately!
Going to have to have words... If only the words would come to my mind!

fox20thc 07-12-2005, 15:27 Its a well known phenomenon that pretty girls always have an ugly friend. Not that the friend is truely ugly but maybe for whatever reason doesn't sparkle as much as the other.
I myself had a best friend at school who was incredibly glam all the time whilst I went through the ugly duckling phase and felt terrible.
Wisdom comes with age and eventually most people grow to like what they are and are comfortable in their own skin, until some hard hearted fool says the trigger word that brings all our insecurites to the surface again.
I personally do not like to be compared size wise with anyone. I am not huge, nor am I skinny. I am normal and have finally come to the realisation that having big boobies and being a mere 5'2" means I shall NEVER look like a supermodel. :D
Curvy .. I can live with that :heyhey:
Yellowrose 07-12-2005, 15:49 I would describe myself as curvy or Rubenseque and havent had any trouble attracting men. I was very slim when I was 20 and that was fine, but with each passing decade I acquired more curves. Diets only make a brief difference and arent worth the hassle. If I go out with a man when Im on a diet they tend to think Im boring if I dont drink and pick at a salad.
I have just accepted my curves and so has the current man in my life. BTW I have accepted his curves too!

I can only agree with everyone about how they feel about curves and what they feel is attractive in a woman.
Since Charlotte Church's 'Call my Name' music video - i have made it clear to many people that i think she is a perfect role model to girls her age. She's extremely sexy and turning in to a true women - wonderfully.
Although i read she's cutting down on junk food and her binge drinking to do a fitness video with her welsh bloke - she's adamant to still eat whats she wants but with in reason. Couldn't agree more!
Curves are beautiful! Stay sexy everyone.

Cliff Clavin 07-12-2005, 21:00 Well i'd describe Anna Nicole Smith as curvy. So fir me Curvy is a sexy look for a woman. I prefer curvy over stick. Curvy is not fat. Big Built, Heavy, Plump, Overweight are probably expressions I use for soomeone being fat.
Plain Talker 07-12-2005, 21:49 I am large:- I have big bones, but, yes, I also have a layer of *coff* "upholstery" on me.
I am happy in the skin I'm in.
I have to say, I personally do think that women with meat on their bones look better, but hey, If you're someone who is naturally thin, then, Meh! again, you have to be happy in your skin.
I'm Big.. so what? I'm all me! Now my cousin," S", is very, very lean,(naturally) she's a size 6/8, , she's all her....
My "ideals" are the "old" Sophie Dahl, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia loren and that ilk.
It wouldn't do for us all to like the same type, though.
Some men like thin women, some men like large women... some like tall lasses, some like shorthouses.... whatever does it for you, basically.
I normally like blokes with a "bit of meat on their bones", too... tall , dark haired, chunky, bearded blokes, (I had 2 long term relationships/ marriage to fellas like that) and yet, here I am, mad crazy in love with a bloke who is slender, middling height, blonde and clean-shaven.
You can't decide who you are going to fall in love with....

Godzilla 08-12-2005, 20:05 Yes, I think girls do get this message quite young, but it's not necessarily from Barbie or stick-thin models. The press do an enormous amount of damage. A celeb puts on a couple of pounds and the headlines scream "Duchess of Pork" or "Lardy Spice" and give the playground bullies more names to call. One thing that is a bit of an issue is posture. I see so many young women (usually wearing crop tops and low-slung pants) and they look fat when they are not really, it's just the way they slouch. They look as if they always eat from a reclining position in front of the TV.

 i second that, iv been out with a few people that are really skinny and i prefere curvy any day, though some one thats actually fun to spend time with wins

I'm so glad you said size 14 and not age 14 :|
For myself, anything from a size 6 to a size 12 is generally fine.

I am never ever going to be a size 10, but I really don't care !!
Any bloke who puts my weight first is a pratt and should be slapped.
IMHO of course..... :D
Personality is what counts along with whats within a person... not whats on the outside... lol
notrecoach87 09-12-2005, 12:39 Curvy doesn't meen fat. What bar do you work at, I may pay you a visit! I like curvy women,
I think there are more men out there that like the fuller figure then they're letting on... some men seem to always go on they're mates opinions as they dont want to be seen with a so called "pig" on they're arm...
A while back in my bigger days i was with someone who took a lot of stick for being with me... but because he loved me he paid no attention...
To me thats a MAN!
banesmabes 09-12-2005, 13:59 Women can be so cruel about each other’s weight. I’m a size 18, but (I think) fairly well-proportioned (I still have a waist and a noticable figure). I’m fairly happy with my size and personally cannot be bothered with the obessiveness and unhappiness that comes with dieting. I did diet once, lost 3 stone in 6 months and got down to a size 14 – but I was no happier, in fact I was less happy because I was constantly having to eat bland, low-calorie food.
But I think it’s really hurtful how women talk about it. There are people in my office who are size 12-14 who go an and on about how fat they are and how they need to lose weight – do they ever consider what message that is sending to me? And what it is saying to me when they slag off other women they know who are a size 20? And yet these are people who are otherwise my friends, but they will be cruel about larger people in front of me and not think anything of it.
Famous women can’t win in the media either. On the one hand you have people like Kate Winslet (before she gave in to the pressure and shed the pounds) and Charlotte Church described as fat (as if – they must have been size 12 absolute tops!) and then on the other they go on at other women for being too skinny (Posh for example). What do the media want exactly?!?
I think men are generally more accepting of size than women are. And by that I mean they are not so openly abusive about other men who are larger and there are many men out there who find women of all sizes attractive. You only have to look at the confidence many larger men have about their attractiveness to see that it is not so much of an issue for men.
There are those men of course who do seem to insist that any women above a size 10 is fat. I will never forget being sat in a restaurant late one night in Leeds, several years ago when I was only a size 14, two blokes were loudly talking about the attractive or unattractiveness of me and my friends. The much larger of the two (must have been about 18 stone) shouted loudly about me – “She might look alright if she lost 3 stone”. Thankfully these men are few and far between. And any man who thinks that size is really that important are not particularly worth bothering with, because who would want to be with someone that shallow?

Yuk, how slimy
Moon Maiden 09-12-2005, 14:43 I used to be anorexically skinny and put on ALOT of weight after having my two children but have lost most of it now.
my fella said I was curvy the other night and I was mortified, as I had always presumed it was a polite way of saying fat!
Tis nice to hear that it isn't as common as I thought. He said something about having an hourglass figure...should I be offended?
Moon
Moon, dont be offended a lot of girls wished they had an hourglass figure, your lucky!

Ok sunshine, my appologies.
Crayfish 10-12-2005, 23:50 Hmm, have to say I prefer the slimmer woman - I go for athletic e.g. toned / slightly muscular rather than anorexic though. Guess I just like the look of people who take care of themselves and live an active lifestyle.
That is a personal preference and I wouldn't have said it was anything to do with media etc.
climaxchick 19-12-2005, 01:46 I love you all! Thanks again for posting your views - Glad to see that people are still posting on this subject.
