What's everyone's favourite albums of this year? I was going to post mine straight away but will have to think about it a bit as so many and nothing really stands out.

the only thing that stands out for me off the top of my head is the KT Tunstall album.

It's called ZenTV, loads of different mad videos on it, including Mr Scruff....

See here (http://www.ninjatune.net/ninja/release.php?id=804) for details. Fopp on Division Street had it in for £5 at one point - dunno if that's still the case.

Sweet troubled soul is just brilliant even if the lyrics are indulging a long hidden emo part of me.

Sorry, bit late with my response. In answer to your question, Polar Bear are a sort of dancey jazz band, very contemporary and youthful sounding. A bit like a Red Snapper comprising some of the best musicians in the country. If they ever play live near you, they are a must see. I saw them in Leeds last month and they took the top of my head off- the drummer is sensational. They have a spin off band called Acoustic Ladyland who played in Sheffield last friday. Again, they are a superb live of-sorts jazz act but have a more raucous, punky, Hendrix edge (as you might have guessed by their name).

Polar Bear were this years rank, rank outsiders at the Mercury Music awards. They didn't really have much of a chance unfortunately.

I thought this year was particularly notable for the amount of disappointing follow up albums by artists with previously immaculate back catalogues. Some that spring to mind:

Boards Of Canada - Campfire Headphase (tried a new direction and ended up losing their innovative edge)

Super Furry Animals - Lovekraft (overblown, and by far their least varied and exciting record)

Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene (good, but trying too hard to better it's predecessor. Ends up sounding like everything including the kitchen sink has been thrown at it)

Beck - Guerro (well past his peak. Scientology has a lot to answer for)

Elbow - Leaders Of The Free World (some great tracks, but nowhere near as good as the last two albums)

Daft Punk - Human After All (lazy and quite terrible, are they really the same partnership that brought us Homework? Probably the biggest disappointment of them all.)

Roykssop - The Understanding (poor)

This was either late 2004 or early 2005 but in my opinion the best album was :-

Kasabian - Kasabian

Closely followed by Oasis - Don't belive the truth and Ian Brown's - The Greatest.

Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to all on the Sheffield Forum.

For my money, I'd nominate Feels by Animal Collective and In The Reins by Calexico (with Iron & Wine). These are both bands a friend recommended to me and I'm glad she did - very definitely worth listening to.

I have to admit though, I've not really paid much attention to new music this year, so there's not much from '05 in my collection at the moment (waiting for the January sales :))

EDIT: I'll also include Arcade Fire, as everyone else has, but according to the sleeve notes that was released in '04????

The Gorillaz Demon Days album is remarkably good. So is Jack Johnson's In Between Dreams. I read a historical review in the Evening Standard whining that it was just the same as all his other stuff. Which of course is why it's so darn good, and I'm happy to have another CD of his mellifous warbling in my collection. Why, I wonder, is no artist worthy of critical acclaim unless they constantly evolve their approach? We, at least music critics, have very short attention spans.

Pallokaville by Fatboy Slim, still makes me laugh at the words and dance to the rhthms when I hear it.

"And the sign says long haired freaky people, need not apply" - dunno why I like the chorus but it always makes me laugh!

Queen + Paul Rodgers was my fave album of the year, then they released it on DVD Woo Hoo!!!!

Also liked the Kaiser chiefs album and what i heard from The Darkness's new Album One way ticket to hell... and back (a bit of a confusing title though, how can it be one way and back? Surely thats 2 ways) ha ha

A Rock band called The Quireboys (Not the young kids) released a single just before christmas called Tears in Heaven (an Eric Clapton Song that weirdly enough the young kids The Choirboys also released the very same song)

that was my favourite single of the year
