I think this idea has been around for quite a while.

Do you think the moor should be roofed?

If so, who should fund it? Tax payers, the shop keepers, mixture of both?

Not fully undercover......... but, I think every shop should have a uniform style glass cover. They would need to stick out more than the existing concrete ones do. They should also be 'folding' so in hot weather, they can be electronically retracted so they are pulled upwards towards the wall from which they 'hang'.

As for paying for them..... a mix between the council and the shops.

If you want a shopping centre with a roof, then we could build one and call it something catchy like Meadowhall I suppose...?

It would be a good idea if the markets moved down there.

No... cos all the other shops down the Haymarket end of town would go bust, cos nobody goes down that end of town except for the Markets.

I dont think they would go bust as the bus stops are still there, so people will still use them. I don't shop at the markets but I still shop on Waingate.

Leave it as it is, what's wrong with getting wet every now and then?

Why should the taxpayer pay for it? The Moor belongs (on a 125 yr lease) to Deutsche Bank, not the Council.

Deutsche have had plans for The Moor for ages, but the Council keeps getting in the way because it's protecting its NRQ scheme next door. I wouldn't expect anything much in the near future unless they manage to put the market community back together. :(

Whats the point of roofing somewhee that is home to loads of awful nasty shops and dodgy street traders?

Roof or no roof, until it stops being so trashy and skeffy, I'm never going down there.

I like the idea of having a roofed area in the city centre - I think it's definately something Sheffield is missing, especially if the shops in there are good quality and, like you say, the "scrattiness" of the moor is cleaned up a bit.

I thought perhaps raising the land rental in the area might help pay for some of cost? This way, you would hopefully get rid of the all the cheap crappy discount shops and replace them with shops that would be an assett to Sheffield and that can afford the rental.

You're missing out on Home Bargains and the Chinese supermarket.

Architecturally a lot of the Moor sucks. I think it'd be better to sort out the crap buildings before putting a roof over it.

No, why ruin the character of the Moor?

I want to know why there are so few pubs down the Moor or off the Moor.

The moor is probably the only place in town where I would want to change it's character!
It's awful.

All the good shops in town are up the top end of Town, in Barker's Pool, Orchard Square and Fargate.

Nobody goes down The Moor except for shops like Debenhams and Atkinsons.

Also, try to get a decent cuppa down that end?! No chance unless you go in the Restaraunt in Atkinsons, but their coffees are a fortune.

That's why I stick to Fargate and go in TJ Hughes if I need to whet me whistle, I've been in so many times I'm on first name terms with most of the staff now.

If they did roof it would it stop the idiots with umbrellas walking with them up under the covered areas, shoving the people who hate brollies into the rain?? This happens further up as well near where suggs used to be.

I'd much prefer a roof over the entire City of Sheffield that slides open on the dozen-or-so days of the year when it's not murky and it's warm and the sun is shining.

Anyone ever read This Other Eden by Ben Elton?

Wish it'd had a roof on Sunday when the farmers market was there - blowing a gail, and freezing cold!

Must admit architecturally it's pretty dated and would rather they re-built it.
