What is the right time to put up christmas decorations? Are external christmas lights great or just a pain in the arse?

Personal choice. This year christmas is not coming to my home. I am taking a year off. I can enjoy seeing other people happy with their decorations.

I love some of the houses up Stocksbridge though - talk about ott. Amazing - and then as well as the usual bills for pressies and such - wait till their leccy bill comes in.

Are all these lights doing the environment much good? Does anyone care?

Enjoy and if you want - cover the entire house in decorations. Whatever makes you feel good is what is important.

I'm not sure when the right time to put decorations up is. Traditions are moving the date forward.

I won't be putting mine up till the 23rd. Because it's the closest date to the Solstice and the end of the school term for the kids so we can have a nice clear run through christmas to the new year. I have a big meal planned after we have decorated the house and friends are coming.

I'm not decorating outside the house...may have a few plain twinkling lights in the window if I can figure out how to get them up and stay up.

I think some houses can look really nice with the outside decorations. Like if they have a tree in the garden stringing it with lights. We can't go anyway of an evening without my DD shouting "awwwwwwwwww christmas lights". She thinks it's great.
Personally I think alot of houses look really tacky with all the inflatables and lit up santas!
