View Full Version : The Oakwood Center, Rotherham... anyone know it?
Hi
Just wondering whether anybody knows where this place is, what it's generally used for?
A band I want to see is playing there in January and I've never heard of it before... so was just wondering...
http://www.streamofpassion.com/ is the band, a new band formed by Arjen Anthony Lucassen (better known for his band Ayreon (http://www.ayreon.com) although still pretty unheard of in the UK)
I really have to go see this so was just wondering where abouts it is, so I know how I'm going to get there :) thanks!
There's Oakwood School - I think they have a swimming baths too, and I know they have a beer festival there every year  Maybe it's connected to that?
metalman 05-12-2005, 20:26 Yes, Ive been in the past to some of the Classic Rock Society gigs there. It's basically Oakwood School hall.

Oakwood Centre is easy to get to from either Sheffield or Manchester.
From Sheffield take the Parkway from Castle Square to Junction 33 for the M1. Straight across the roundabout at the end of the Parkway, on over the M1 staying on A630 for about 200 yards to another Roundabout....take the second turning off this, go up the hill on the A631 Bawtry Road for about another 300 yards. You will at this point come to a set of traffic lights as road dips down (A631/A618 Junction)
Turn left at the lights (signed Rotherham) Up the hill about 800yards, past Rotherham District & General Hospital on your left, and The Oakwood Centre is about 200 yds further on left after the Hospital.
Hope this helps.
If you are travelling from Manchester just come southbound on the M1 to Junc 33, turn left at end of slip road, onto the A630 follow the above instructions after that.
I know Oakwood School well ..... I used to go to the school from 1953-1958.... I remember having Morning Assembly in the Hall every day and also being in the School Plays there.....are what great memories of a time gone by !!!
Thanks, dont drive though ;) but if its really close to the hospital then I know how to get there from where my mum lives in Sheffield and from Rotherham town :)
So from what I understand its after the hospital but before Thomas Rotherham College?
thanks
shoeshine 06-12-2005, 11:11 Oops Xafier.... sorry I mispelled your username in the last post.
And I got a School prize for my English Language at 'O' Level!!
Must be my age catching up with me LOL

Yes mate- its a couple of hundred yards after the hospital :D
shoeshine 06-12-2005, 11:24 Xafier... yes its on Moorgate Road, about 200 yard closer to Rotherham than the Hospital.
From Rotherham get on Moorgate Road outbound, go past Thomas Rotherham College on your right about 300 yards further on your right from this direction.
To get up to the School from Moorgate Road, look for Tailors Lane ( quite narrow) and Tailors Lane is the Main driveway up to the main School Reception proper.
shoeshine 06-12-2005, 11:31 I also remember getting the Slipper on the backside from the Deputy Head for riding my bike down Tailor's Lane. LOL.
Couldn't happen now could it!
Still great times though !!!!
I'll probably just take a nice long walk from town center then :D can't be arsed to get a bus from town for a measily stop or two lol... now to convince a friend or two to come with :D
shoeshine 06-12-2005, 12:07 Yoy have got me wondering now, Xafier, if the slipper used on me was purchased out of the School's Fund from revenue gained via the School plays I was in, was it was a new unused one kept for the purposes for which it was used on me, or could it have been the Dep Head's private slipper used each night when he got home together with it's counterpart.
If it was school issue, kept there permanently, did one of the other teachers use the other one of the pair at home as a slipper, rotating it between right and left foot on alternate nights, to keep the wear even! LOL
Also I wonder what size it was..... it felt big on contact with me......and was it a right or left slipper?
I'll end up thinking about this all night now.

cool :D I got two tickets, still trying to decide who to take with me... I love the album, I cant stop listening to it... then again, I really love Ayreon and Arjen Lucassens song writing, he's fantastic...
will see you there then ;)
Nostatic 01-01-2006, 20:01 Meaks - thanks for the map.
Xafier - yeah. Arjen is "the man." Ayreon, Star One, SoP and so on.
Should be a real "blast" on the 28th.
Nostatic 29-01-2006, 13:09 Did anyone go last night then?
What a night! Waited a long time to see Mr Lucassen - and not disappointed. Very, very good indeed. They all looked like they were enjoying themselves and "in to it."
Damien Wilson - with a voice like that, should be a bigger star.
Oliver Wakeman Band - I kinda warmed to their set towards the end of it and might well check out Mothers Ruin.
