Do you know the history of Broughton,,,,,,its said that a man called Broughton was found guilty stealing the mail yonks ago he was from Ecclesfield and he was put in chains and hung drawn and quarterd on the spot that is now Broughton Lane,,,,,not ver Rock and Roll but interesting all the same
used to go in early eighties always drunk though so cant remember interior
In the sixties I was in a band Called "Bob Andrews and The Questors" and we used to play at The Broughton regulary I remember some great nights there. You'll probably Know Bob Andrews nowadays as Bobby Knut.
The Broughton Inn was on the corner of Broughton Lane and Attercliffe Common Broughton lane was named after a highwayman called Spencer Broughton who held up mail coaches on attercliffe He was caught and hung at York
His body was gibbeted on clifton street in the backyard of a pub ( the brown bear I think) anyway the beer in the broughton as rubbish.

His name was Spence Broughton and his accomplice was John Oxley, who was never caught.
The 'Mail Coach' was in fact a pony and cart driven by a postboy carrying the mails to Rotherham, and the postboy was not harmed.
Broughton was tried and hung in York and his body brought back to Attercliffe to be hung in chains from a gibbet at the scene of the crime.
The site of the gibbet is not known exactly, there were no 'streets' in that part of Attercliffe in 1792 and the nearest pub was an inn called the 'Arrow', but it is commonly supposed to be somewhere near the corner of Broughton Lane and Attercliffe common.
According to R E Leader the base of the gibbet ws discovered in 1867 by somone digging out the cellars of a new property 'opposite the Yellow Lion public house' - something I'll have to look up some time :)
Greybeard 15-02-2005, 12:21 linda,
I new that pub was famous for something....finally managed to put my finger on it.
According to Michael Liversidge in his book "Attercliffe - A Wander Up The Cliffe" -
"The Broughton Inn at 343 Attercliffe Common was a Duncan Gilmour public house and was made up of a large concert room and a much smaller offshot room. Gerry Dorsey, better known as Englebert Humperdink, served his showbusiness apprenticeship here, charging only about a fiver a night, long before Las Vegas, and a much large appearance fee, ever beckoned. "

ENGLANDER 24-01-2007, 16:57 Had SKINHEADS NIGHTS in the early seventies where you could get served underage BIG CHARLIE was the Bouncer
I remember BIG Charlie at the 'Broughton' I could tell you a few stories about him as well. He is only a shadow of his former self ( he was once in the running for ' slimmer of the Year' was Charlie. I didn't go in much coz the beer was absolute garbage. I went further up the road to the ' Enfield' and the 'Railway' ( Noose and Gibbet ) nowdays
PhilMurray 18-06-2010, 22:47 Does anyone remember the rock n roll nights in the broughton inn attercliffe early 80's ...... any memories????
ricgem2002 19-06-2010, 07:43 i remember once going with a mate of mine who was a teddy boy and i was a skinhead no trouble thou .i think that would have been about 1981-2
PhilMurray 19-06-2010, 07:49 I once got roger the dj to put the meteors on...i started to dance wi mi mate then suddenly got surrounded by a few teddy boys holding bottles... Luckerly the landlord kept them at bay with his baseball bat!!!
GUZZIOWL 19-06-2010, 09:01 Me and a pal used to go regularly on our bikes ( we both had Norton commandos ) in the mid 70's . One night in particular , this leather clad rocker strolled in with his helmet under his arm . It was mostly Teds that went in ,so seeing another biker in the pub ,we got talking and went outside to look at his bike ." I haven't got a bike ,i've come on the bus....but i'm gonna gerra bike soon he said " .He wanted to look the part bless him :hihi::hihi:....I remember winning albums by Carl Perkins and Charlie Rich in the raffle ...great times !!
jane2008 19-06-2010, 10:13 I remember going to the Broughton on Rock n Roll nights. Fridays, it was I think. The music and clothes were brilliant.
Steptoad 19-06-2010, 15:12 I went a couple of times and was worried about being underage, but the landlord didn't bat an eye. I also seem to remember being served through a hole in the wall rather than a proper serving hatch.
The records were alternated one for Teds, one for Rockabillies and we'd take it in turns to dance accordingly. That was the first time I noticed that Teddy Boys and Rockabillies didn't mix.
PhilMurray 22-06-2010, 17:39 I remember seeing the sharp cuts at the broughton when they were starting off.
CaptainChaos 23-06-2010, 16:38 One of my exes took me there one night, she was well into the rock and roll scene down to the old corsair, and 50's clothes. Being more into ABC, and Heaven 17 at the time I didnt really get it. Pity its gone and how time mellows you. I would be back there now in a heartbeat.
Hi to one and all, this is my first post on here.
I'm trying to find people that used to go to the Broughton Inn on Attercliffe, Friday nights were Rock n Roll nights this was in the 70s and 80s.
I knew quite a few people that used to go Teddy Boys & Girls but only by the first name, because of this it's difficult to trace old pals.
So if there is anyone reading this that I might know then please message me, here are a cople of names that I remember.
Linda, I think was from Richmond Park she gave me a broad red leather belt with a large lions head buckel and I think Mark was from Barnsley,(An item at the time), Jenny & Steve (an item at the time and now married), Pete Dex, Crazy Dave (Rock 'n' Roll DJ on Friday nights along with Roger who wore a blue drape jacket , Maggie, a radio ham from Sheffield, Kevin Delaney he could Jive all night and his quiff never moved, I think he was once the manager of a shoe shop. I'm Richard from Rotherham I wore a maroon drape jacket with black velvet roll coller and half moon pockets, white shirt with either a bootlace tie or a slim jim by Kingfisher, black trousers with channel seams and 6" bottoms plus blue or black suede shoes also the DA hair style with quiff and side burns, my now ex-wife Denise from Ecclesfield. Please :help:XH558
Hi my name is Richard originaly from Rotherham, I used to go every Friday night with my now ex-wife Denise. I had forgot all about Roger on the decks, I do remember Crazy Dave who used to stand in for Roger on the stage with the decks. Ron was the landlord at the time. I used to go to Clifton hall in Rotherham to see groups like Crazy Cavern & the Rythem Rockers etc. these were great times. anyway I have put a post on this site re-The Broughton Inn, maybe you could help, please read my post, Thanks.
Steptoad 07-04-2011, 20:41 Hi XH558, I only went to The Broughton a couple of times, but I've been knocking around that scene since about 1980 and most of those names don't mean anything to me, but I've seen Dex in someones photos recently so he's still around and Crazy Dave, who I count amongst my friends, is still around and about. Still DJing. He can often be found at the Rock'n'Roll club at the BRSA club in Chesterfield.
Hi and thanks for your reply, I think the last time I saw Dex was at Clifton Hall in Rotherham, as for Crazy Dave it will have been at the Broughton Inn. If you still see Crazy Dave can you ask him if he knows Linda's last name, I'm sure he knew her pretty well, she had blond hair and used to ware a red drape and full circle skirt with sneakers, she wasn't one for high heels. She had an on/off relationship with Mark from Barnsley.
If I can get her last name I might be able to find her on FB etc.
The last time I went to a club in Chesterfield for Rock n Roll the DJ was called Moggy.
Many thanks.
Steptoad 08-04-2011, 07:55 Dave's on FB under his own name (Dave Brighton).
Moggy's still alive and kicking, I was at his 70th birthday bash earlier this year. I last saw him last month at the Go-getters gig at PLUG in Sheffield. I don't think he's DJing anymore, it's mainly Hodge and Andy Barker.
Let me know if you get in touch with Dave, I mighht not see him for a while now.
Hi, thanks for the info, I have now found Dex on Myspace after going on Crazy Dave's page.
I have sent Dex a friend request, so hopefuly I will be able to find more info re old pals from the Broughton Inn and Clifton Hall.
Once again many thanks for your help, all the very best.
Richard XH558.

I'm surprised you couldn't get in 'cos you were too young. Although I was 18 I looked about 12 (so other lanlords would tell me), but I never had any problems at the Broughton. Wish I had that problem now.
I seem to remember that The Broughton didn't have a bar in the room where the record hop was held, but you could get served through a hole in the wall that looked as though it had been kicked through. It was all rough, broken with exposed brickwork. I always thought that was the way they got around serving underage drinkers. Could be just my imagination though.
Steptoad 10-06-2011, 15:19 Did any of you go to the Dog And Partridge?
John Dory 10-06-2011, 16:07 Did any of you go to the Dog And Partridge?
I worked with a kid called Chris in the late 80's who was a big Rock'n'roll fan, he often went to the Dog and Partridge. He always looked the part and he even drove a big 50's car, he moved up to Sheffield from Brighton in the 80's, anyone remember him?

I don't remember the serving hatch being in such a state, but that may have happened after I had stopped going to the Broughton. I know all the walls were painted black and the lighting was the type that showed up anything white.
Ron was the landlords name but I can't remember his wifes name, The photo I've used for my avatar was taken as you can see in front of what seems to be the gents toilets, but actually that door opened up into a passage way leading to another bar area as well as toilets.

THE MOST 11-06-2011, 16:43 Does anyone know what happened to Gary and Adelle West who used to go to Broughton and then Dog Partridge on r n r nights ?
THE MOST 11-06-2011, 17:14 Did any of you go to the Dog And Partridge?
I went to Broughton and Dog and know or know of almost all the names mentioned in all threads
You can find a lot of them on Facebook where most people on or off scene are keeping in touch with each other
A GOOD REFERENCE POINT IS THE BLACK BULL ROCK N ROLL YEARS PAGE ON FACEBOOK
THE MOST 11-06-2011, 17:42 You can find most people from then on facebook try black bull page
I only went to the Bull a couple of times, I can only remember a couple of names one was either Spike or Spider the other was a guy called Sandy who at the time was courting a girl called Mandy Haze from Rotherham.
I remember the lads from the Bull taking that b/w photo outside Clifton Hall.
As for the Dog, I can picture the DJ a short but well made guy with a tash but can't remember his name.
Does anyone remember Kev Delaney, if so do they know where he is now.
I last saw him at the Broughton 30 odd years ago, he was Timpson's shoe shop manager on Hillsborough back then.

I went in there when I was looking for some blue suede creepers and he pointed me in the right direction (not Timpsons) that was 30 years ago. He was still there when I went in recently. Oh no, hang on that was 15 years ago:hihi:
