View Full Version : Anyone had a pulmonary embolism( clot in the lungs)
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 17:12 Has anyone ever had a pulmonary embolism before which for anyone that doesn't know is a blood clot in the lungs.
i know symptoms of this is breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up blood, going pale etc, but i am having pain when i breath in, when i breath in it hurts me chest quite alot and i am getting chest pains, but i am not really out of breath at the moment.
I am only 23 and i know blood clots are most common in people who have recently had operations, people who are obese and pregnant etc but i cant stop worrying, also i have been in bed alot since saturday as i have had a horrible bug, so i haven't been moving around that much,
Is there anyone on here that has had one who could give me some advice or is there anyone with good knowledge about this.
Cheers.
Dj_Shadowman 05-12-2005, 17:16 Could also be pericodarnitis (not sure if its spelt right)
its where the sac around the heart swells up, symptoms are very similar.
I have had this twice and know how it feels - and it can be dangerous.
You would be vunerable to this especially after a chest infection...get to the quacks or the NHS direct place in Attercliffe.
Yorksguy
Best advice is go to your GP or NHS walk in centre mate.
From what you describe it's unlikely to be a PE, sounds more like musculo-skeletal painm, but to be safe you should never take advice from the internet over a consultation with a doctor.
Best wishes
Dj_Shadowman 05-12-2005, 17:25 I agree, thats why I said get to the doctors...
Sorry DJS...wasnt having a go at you or your advice there....I just meant in general!
So yes it's agreed then! Get to the doctors Yorksguy or DJ Shadow and I will be mad. Very mad.
Alex
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 17:29 do you mean Peritonitis DJ_Shadowman?
I have just looked that up on the nhs direct website i don't have any symptoms of that, the symptoms of that are:-
severe pain in a specific area of the abdomen (stomach) or throughout the whole abdomen,
tenderness in the abdomen,
abdomen feels really hard,
shoulder pain,
feeling or being sick (nausea and vomiting),
chills and fever, with a temperature of 100.5° F (38.0°C) or higher,
dizziness and weakness,
a rapid heartbeat, and
low blood pressure.
I don't really have any of them apart from feeling tired and sick.
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 17:35 actually DJ_Shadowman you must mean:- Pericarditis.
the symptoms are:-
is particularly felt when you change position, breathe deeply or cough,
is usually located in the middle of the chest or slightly to the left,
can be sharp and stabbing, or constant and steady, and
may spread to the neck and shoulders.
Other symptoms include:
breathing difficulties when lying down,
a dry cough,
occasional ankle, feet and leg swelling,
a fever,
fatigue, and
anxiety.
The only symptoms i really have from the above are fatigue, dry cough and it hurting a bit when i cough, it doens't hurt really bad i am not in agony.
AlquarUK 05-12-2005, 18:02 Dude, get your a55 to the Dr's ASAP and have it checked out. Better to be safe than sorry!! ;)
good luck :)
Yup. Know EXACTLY. I had one last year and was laid low for about 2 months. VERY VERY painful. I ended up on warfarin for 6 months. Get it checked out as soon as you can!
drolnhoj 05-12-2005, 18:11 My partner did have one two years ago. She went to our GP and he immediately called an ambulance to get her to hospital. Better to be safe than sorry. She was about 35, not pregnant, not had an operation, not obese but she had a pulmonary embolism.
I had a PE when I was about 35. Symptoms were acute localised chest pain, wasn't very painful, I just thought I'd 'pulled' something, short of breath and anxiousness, my body kind of 'knew' something wasn't quite right.
Fatlity rate is around 30% so I'd seek medical advice pronto.

Could be a problem there, i seem to remember a post he made about a week ago saying that his doctor had taken the entire family out of the surgery as they had made a complaint against the doctor (correct me if im wrong but working from memory)
Would suggest NHS direct.....NOW
Pulmonary embolism is an extremely serious condition and if left untreated is fatal so to stop you panicking it sounds highly unlikely you have it, the primary symptom is breathlessness.
It sounds like a muscle strain because you describe it as being a pain when you breathe. But don't diagnose yourself on the net, you get 'net hypochondriac' syndrome. If its worrying you and is still there in the morning get yourself to a GP or the drop in centre tonight.
Trishtee 05-12-2005, 19:48 Have you had a severe cold? In which case it could possibly be pleurisy, not life-threatening but you will need some medication. If you feel too rough, phone your GP to come out - NOW! Trish (Nurse at RGH)
Dj_Shadowman 05-12-2005, 19:49 Trish, I think I know you.....Did you used to be a regular in Rebels ?
I had a "PE" in March and it is the worse experience of my life. I would hazard a guess that if you had one, you would have experienced "more severe" symptoms than you describe.
However many people have small pe's with no symptoms at all, dont wait for it to get like mine, i collapsed, couldnt breath, my lips were blue and and it was like someone had stabbed me with a broken bottle.
If it hurts when you breath in and is a sharp pain and also you are experiencing breathing difficulties, you should, as everyone else has said go straight to the A&E.
A pulmonary embolism is extremely serious and can be fatal.
Good luck!
Twiglet,
As i understand it, having spoken with my haemotologist following my pe, the most worrying sign would be sharp pain when breathing in......the trouble is that occasionally muscular pain can be similar, but if it is sharp and will at some point become unbearable if it is a major clot, then thats not necessarily a good sign. The trouble is many other illness can mask a pe and getting it correctly diagnosed can be difficult. I was coughing up blood, but was told this was down to local trauma from my throat! A CT scan would do the trick, plus you would have a test called a d-dimer which checks for anti clotting agents in your blood (which are normally raised following a clot), also chest xrays and your overall general health are an indicator.
Another problem is that if you are ill/have an infection then this can make your blood stickier, so the only thing to do is.......
DONT HANG ABOUT GET TO THE A&E

Fair enough but the only symptom he has is minor chest pain when he breathes in, and he has obviously just typed 'chest pain' into google to see what it came up with. It sounds like the type of pain which ALL of us experience at some point, there have been numerous discussions about it on the forum. I agree that if it was painful enough for him to be worried (or he has other chronic health problems or is on medication which would put him at higher risk) then he should get himself immediate medical attention. But if it's a PE I'll eat my hat.
Twiglet,
Nice to talk with you, but even though i collapsed, was coughing up blood, had severe pain, they said pretty much the same to me, "unlikely to be a pe, more than likely to be pneumonia".
It has had a terrible effect on my life (i am only 34) and i know i/you wouldnt wish it on anybody. It sounds unlikely but with thrombolosis you can never say never.
What kind of hat would it be?
Regards,
Nobby
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 20:20 well my breathing is ok, my partner says so and i think it is ok, i feel rough but the pain is not there constantly, it just hurt's my chest now and again when coughing and breathing in.
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 20:22 I think in my opinion if i had a pe then i would be very short of breath and have more constant severe pain in my chest than i am having now, i will see how it goes, if it gets any worse or remains tomorrow morning i will do something about it.

A woolly one :)
I'm sorry to hear that but you were obviously very seriously ill which is a totally different situation.I'm sure other people on here will also testify that if they went to A&E every time they had 'mild chest pain when breathing in' they would be making several trips a month. I ignore it myself despite having a heart condition.
I would never say never, hence why I still said if he really is concerned he sould get himself checked out.
P.S. Yorksguy I would still give NHS Direct a call tonight just to put your mind at rest, your breathing is bound to start getting funny if you're concerned about something.
In that case then Yorksguy,
I would go with twiglets diagnosis! lol
PE pain wouldnt come and go, you may have a viral infection/chest infection and anxiety could also play a part.
Still go to the quacks mate and get it sorted.
Twiggy - sounds like 1-0 to you!
Nobby
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 20:26 well on friday and saturday i had a stomach bug which resulted in bigtime sickness and diarrhoea, then after recovering from that saturday/sunday i have been aching everywhere, sore throat, dry mouth, slight cough, feel weak and tired, chest hurting when coughing and breathing in, i am a asthmatic as well so dont know if that can cause chest pain when breathing in and coughing.

You will know mate if it is one!, i guess we all hope its not and it sounds unlikely (but you never know). Try not to worry!
Twiglet - What colour woolie?:D
Oh this is the best revision ever!
Anyone else want to help a poor medical student out with exams and throw some symptoms my way ?:P

Ah hah, bigtime sickness often causes very painful muscles in both your chest and abdomen. I'm also asthmatic and chest pain does often occur in asthmatics especially when under other stress such as colds, flu etc.

Feeling queasy, sickness, blurry vision, no money...........hang on thats a medical student on a Sunday morning!
What year you in?
As i understand it there is no exact science to blood clots/nothing is set in stone....I guess you can say that about a lot of medicine, but when recouperating that is difficult to accept, even though you are on anticoagulants there is no guarantee that you wont have another clot and the risk is higher when you have had one.
Good luck!

A nice stripey one.
AGB1 we'll start with an easy one - sudden onset of dizziness, visual disturbance, muscle weakness, loss of balance and coordination. Patient recovers fairly quickly. Presents with raised blood pressure.
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 20:36 been asthmatic for over 15 years, but never really had chest pain, i've had plenty of asthma attacks though, but not had a serious one for at least 5 years.:D
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 20:39 so to sum it all up i had a stomach bug on friday and saturday which resulted in me throwing up violently around 10 times which was very unpleasant and had alot of diarrhoea as well.
that's gone but since then feel like i have the flu with aching all over and having a cough and bit of a sore throat etc.
So i have been under the weather lately, so no-one thinks i have a pulmonary embolism now then?
yorksguy05 05-12-2005, 20:40 I've heard of a few cases where people have had chest pains and breathlessness etc and they have gone to hospital and been diagnosed with asthma and they died days later due to pulmonary embolism, does this happen much and is it easy to determine the difference between asthma and pulmonary embolism?

From my knowledge of pe's.........YES its easy to tell the difference between asthma and a pe!
However diagnosing a PE itself is not easy and yes people do die when not diagnosed correctly, but as you know you can die from a asthma attack, stop worrying mate.......if it was that bad you wouldnt be talking to a numpty like me on here!
Get to the doctors mate and get off the net for diagnosis of conditions, you will go mad.

Is this patient pi$$ed Twiglet ?
top of my differential diagnosis list.
Otherwise I'd have to say I'm stumped. Only thing I can really think of is a TIA :(

Just wondering....YorksGuy are you still alive ?
go to see your gp,its the best advice evryones giving you on here, even if its just to put your mind at rest.ive been on warfarin 17 years.
yorksguy05 07-12-2005, 16:38 I didn't go the GP in the end, i am not really getting chest pain anymore, it doesn't hurt when i breath in or breathe deeply anymore and my breathing is ok so don't think i had a pulmonary embolism, been coughing up alot of phelgm, feels like i had a bad chesty cough but think im slowly getting over it now :D
