It's the only way to lose weight. Diets, especially when you have to pay do not work. mayfair 06-04-2011, 22:18 People pay money to be told what they can and cannot eat. Instead of taking responsibility for what they shovel into their mouths.. Lollipop22 06-04-2011, 22:50 I love weight watchers, I love 5 and a half stone in just under a year and have maintained afterwards, it helps you think about what you're eating, so it clearly does work as long as you're doing it for the right reasons and willing to work at it. You go in and get weighed, only the person that weighs you see's the weight and tells you how you've done, I pay monthly so just sign in and then I leave, there is a meeting afterwards but I don't tend to stay for this. In this they tend to share tips etc. native son 06-04-2011, 22:52 adelrose, my closest friend joined Slimming World in January & has lost 1.5 stone, looks fabulous & says it's not the regime but the fact that lots of people together, men & women, cheer each other on. If you don't read labels or are too dim to realise what's in your food then you are not taking responsibility for your actions. adelrose 06-04-2011, 22:59 Most people are obese due to an overactive thyroid. My body: 1 chinese a week and upto 17.5 body fat from 14/15% after 3 days of it digesting. So basicly my body gains greater fat levels than that of my mate who is less active and eats crap. Tipex 06-04-2011, 23:01 but you have to maintain those changes for life otherwise the weight goes right back on and more . Only goes back on more if you go into starvation modes. Eating regular and losing weight will not gain you more weight. Tipex 06-04-2011, 23:03 Exactly. If you don't read labels or are too dim to realise what's in your food then you are not taking responsibility for your actions. But the labels are misleading. Can you honestly say you don't like takeaway foods? I love them! I can't eat them that much because I train. native son 06-04-2011, 23:22 Only goes back on more if you go into starvation modes. No but returning to your previous eating habits will , which is what most people do after a time on a diet. native son 06-04-2011, 23:26 But the labels are misleading. I can honestly say I don't like takeaways, don't know what goes into them, and have not eaten one for at least 15 years. Shef_Fitness 07-04-2011, 07:17 If you want to get a leaner body BUT NOT DIET, you only need to do one hour of effective fitness training each week. ONE HOUR - and you keep your treats, the chocolate, the daily lattes, the indian takeaway or the fish and chips. One hour of fitness training v 7 days a week dietting - - - which is the more sustainable option in the long term? GrannyGranny 07-04-2011, 09:30 With Slimming World if you reach your target weight all sessions after are free so you still have the support network to keep the weight off. We all know that eating less and more healthy food together with regular exercise will, in most cases, result in weight loss but it always good to have a support network and people to help you keep to that regime. Aliens 07-04-2011, 09:35 There's a guy works down our local chip shop swears he never puts weight on even after munching though a cod and chips every day. I have lost about half a stone in a month and a half, it is good and it is doable as well, you can still eat quite a lot and have occasional treats. The only proviso I would have is that they give you a final weight you need to get down to in some groups and my mother in law only reached hers 6 weeks before she died of cancer when she was the size of a stick! Take the final figure with a pinch of salt and just lose as much as you feel comfortable with. Impecunious 07-04-2011, 10:55 I think everyone is going slightly off track here... Returning to what the original poster asked... There are various weight watchers (ww) meetings around the city. If you pay weekly (more expensive) you just go to the meeting you signed up for. If you pay monthly then you can go to any meeting (and more than one a week if you so wish although you'll only get weighed at one meeting per week), it's cheaper and you also get access to e-source which is the 'online companion' for ww. It is basically a website where you can track your weight loss journey, track your body measurements, track your food that you eat per day, it has recipes, tells you the propoints in any food you could ask for and has SUPPORTIVE forums where you can swap tips and advice with other like minded people. In terms of the actual meeting, you will turn up and collect your tracking card from one of the clerks. You will then join a queue to get weighed. When it's your turn you will be weighed independently by the leader (or sometimes another clerk if it's a big meeting). This weight will be recorded by the leader/clerk on the tracking card (which stays at the meeting) and your own tracking card which you take home each week. I weigh people through at my local meeting and when you get weighed we don't read out the actual weight each week - we will just tell you the loss/gain from that week. It's really not as scary as you imagine and every one is in the same boat. After you've been weighed there's a shop where you can buy ww products and seats set out for the meeting. Every one is really friendly - just get chatting. Then when the leader has finished weighed through she will speak for about half an hour about a different topic each week - this topic is complemented by a free leaflet/magazine thing that you get each week called 'your week'. It has recipes, tips and advice in it. At the end of your first meeting, you will then stay behind with any new members and the leader will go through the programme with you and give you a file with all the relevant information in that you take home with you. You will get a 'silver 7' sticker for every half a stone you lose, a 5% sticker and a 5% booklet when you lose 5% of your body weight and a 10% keyring and a 10% booklet when you lose 10% of your body weight. When you get to goal you become a lifetime member and as long as you don't go more than 5lb over your goal weight, you never have to pay for your meetings. If you do go over the 5lb, you have to pay just until you get back with 5lb range of your goal. I hope this helps. Any other questions, feel free to PM me. Aaaah, that would explain the unacheiveable goal weights then, don't want too many freebies! Impecunious 07-04-2011, 11:42 The goal weights aren't unachievable. There is a chart with all the different heights on. You choose your height and it gives you a range where your goal can fall. The range is between BMI 20 and BMI 25 (a healthy weight range - not made up by ww!). As long as you set your goal within this range ww are happy. It's down to the individual (with the support of their leader) to set a realistic goal. qazitory 07-04-2011, 12:18 You will get a 'silver 7' sticker for every half a stone you lose, a 5% sticker and a 5% booklet when you lose 5% of your body weight and a 10% keyring and a 10% booklet when you lose 10% of your body weight. I'm doing it online so I don't get any freebies :( Although it suits my lifestyle a lot better as I don't have time to go to the meetings. I use my phone to log the food I eat and can see straight away how many points something is. I've lost nearly 1 and half stone since January, so it seems to be working for me! Moonflowers 07-04-2011, 12:23 I suggest you ignore the people who are telling you not to bother, to just eat less & save your money etc. etc etc If you're the sort of person that feels you need to go to Weightwatchers to lose weight then do it. I think you're already part way to achieving your goal. WW isn't scary, people there are just normal people who have a problem with food. I heard someone the other week saying that if they were addicted to alcohol or drugs, they could just stop taking them. It's not so easy with food. I've reached goal a couple of times at WW - and yes, I put the weight on again & am back there again. I must say that I stayed at goal for several years & the reason I put on weight again was because I had an injury that stopped me going to the gym & gradually I got lazy about all the things I had learnt at WW and started eating some of the wrong things again. The reason I go back is that I know that WW works & that I will soon be back at my goal weight again. The new system you might have heard about is great. So I say go for it, you wont regret it & you'll soon be waving goodbye to your bigger self :) Good luck Moonflowers 07-04-2011, 12:24 Aaaah, that would explain the unacheiveable goal weights then, don't want too many freebies! They arent unachievable goal weights! Your leader doesnt even tell you a "final" goal, you work at reaching smaller goals like losing half a stone, losing 5% of your body weight etc. Badlittlepup 07-04-2011, 13:15 The goal weights aren't unachievable. There is a chart with all the different heights on. You choose your height and it gives you a range where your goal can fall. It's down to the individual (with the support of their leader) to set a realistic goal. In my mother in law's experience she was given a goal by her group leader and she did not reach that goal until 6 weeks before she died of cancer. She wasn't the only person on her cancer ward with the same experience, there were some very sick people there who hadn't hit their goal weights yet, she discussed it with other patients. If you're guided by a leader to put down a BMI of 20 when that's not your natural weight then it is unrealistic. Also I assume that the leader's earn by how many people are attending their classes - you're not going to earn much money if you keep sending people away the moment their BMI hits 25. Badlittlepup 07-04-2011, 13:17 They arent unachievable goal weights! Your leader doesnt even tell you a "final" goal, you work at reaching smaller goals like losing half a stone, losing 5% of your body weight etc. Many leaders do. As Impecunious says there is an incentive that if you reach your final goal so obviously many leaders do. And my mother in laws did. People need to enjoy their lives how they want...if they're happy being fat then let them be. You cannot be thin and miserable (live life) Tipex 07-04-2011, 14:52 No but returning to your previous eating habits will , which is what most people do after a time on a diet. Not always the case my friend...Bodies work different and you should never compare yourself to anyone else. redrooster20 08-04-2011, 08:49 I just want to say to the OP good luck with however you decide to lose weight. Losing weight is one of the hardest things that you can do and sometimes joing a weight loss club like Weight Watchers or Slimming World is the only thing that helps some people. You get advice and support from other people in the same situation as you and sometimes that's the most important thing about attending these classes. addylewis 08-04-2011, 08:58 I thought you were gonna say "there isn't one here" lol moke 08-04-2011, 11:42 from what i have seen of weightwatchers, some of the opinions on here are a little unfair. it is a support and information group designed to help people make long term changes to their heath and wellbeing. it uses sound and medically recommended gradual changes to diet to help people, usually people with a real need or desire to change who have struggled on their own. since 'Tipex' bought a drug comparison in, you wouldn't tell an alcoholic looking for a local AA meeting to 'don't bother mate, just cut back the drinking lol' - it's not just the food, it's a who habit / lifestyle change we are talking about - including exercise. it's all well talking about your personal metabolism etc, but you arent looking at this from the perspective of someone with a weight problem, as your 15% bodyfat figure shows! it's so effective that the NHS were funding people to go in certain cases, as it is far more cost effective, and with higher long term results that slimming pills, as well as better for the NHS, reducing ongoing weight related illnesses. NHS weightwatchers research by the MRC..... (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7884821/Weight-Watchers-really-does-work-scientists-claim.html) so if the OP is still reading, i'd say go for it, and take the plunge! |
