good to see people doing engineering. Good luck with it. It's blo*dy hard! good luck to you too angelic. I've been at hallam for 5 years and had a great time.

Yes I agree mate. It is hard. I dont find the engineering aspect of it that difficult. Its the maths which is my dark area. :) went to the open day last week. they dont half suck up to ya but behined the smoke screen it seemed a nice play to study.

I had the same problem with maths as well. I'm doing forensic engineering. There is a lot of maths support though. If you get your head down and work at it, you'll be fine. I personally think the engineering school is one of the best schools at hallam. The facillities and staff are excellent. unfortunately, doing engineering means that you'll have a lot more hours in lectures than most other courses, but thats the price you pay.

I'm doing mechanical engineering. It is quite maths intensive, but I a duffer like me who hadn't been to school for 20 years can do it, I'm sure you'll be okay.

The engineering school is excellent. Kerry in reception is excellent, always a smiling face and willing to help.

Thats one thing I did notice. The facilities do look outstanding. This maybe a stupid question to ask, but you here all this bu****** about so many thousands of engineers short to get you onto the course, but from a students point of view does the outlook on being an engineer look bright? job prospects etc..?

I have been in engineering for 25 years. My opinion is that we're short of YOUNG engineers. People who will carry the torch after my lot have retired. The youngest engineer out of 6 of us is 37!

Remember, everything you use or see has had the input of an engineer sometime during (if not all the way thorugh) it's development.

i'm not sure yet mate. I'll let you know next year. A lot of my friends finished last year. All doing different degrees. All of them have now got jobs in their respective professions. Even though it took some of them a while, they all got employment eventually. I'm sure if you come out of uni with a decent degree, you will get a job. maybe not as soon as you finish, but you will.

He he he..... I did the exact same course at Hallam, all I can say I hope you like maths, lol. Cos theres lots of it arrrrrrgh. Lecturers doin that course arnt too bad, but some could have been better. I did have a few moments where I felt like packing it all in, but stuck at it, was mostly maths that I struggled with. Overall a top place to study, excellant facilities, had loads of fun and made loads of friends. Hope I have not put you off. Good Luck.

I know a few people who have recently graduated from Hallam with various engineering degrees - only one of them has found a job so far...... 2 of my other mates who have been engineers for 15 years and 40+ years have found it so difficult trying to find other jobs after being made redundant they have both changed career. One is training to be a teacher, the other has just started with a small start up company writing reports for them. Doesn't look too great to me but you never know...

I'm getting sick of contacting Hallam.

I've contacted them 3 times now to see if there is any chance of me getting on a Social Work course this September and each time I'm told they will have to talk to someone else and will get back to me.

Maths is my downfall. Apparently the Social Work degree now requires you to have maths GCSE. Even though by the time I go to uni I will have completed one year of a computer studies HNC, which obviously requires some maths work.

It'll be too blo0dy late soon! :P

YIKES! lol. I agree. Some maths within engineering is seriously tough and there is no way of getting out of it. It has to be correct. You cant construct a bridge and make a rough guess on the strength of the steel. Otherwise it could blow down. or sway (like the millennium bridge in london) ;)

I doubt it, the maths support is for all students, and if a 4th year comes i doubt he'll be asking about addition :o

You would have thought it would have been for all student types, but that is what happened when our group of electronic engineering students went along for help.... In the end we approached one of our lecturers who agreed to give us extra tuition and also by helping each other in adsetts after lectures.

Im sorry if this has upset some maths helpers but this is what happened, maybe we picked the wrong day and that particular maths help lecturer was unable to help, maybe a different day, different lecturer may have been able to have helped.

I did escape sorry graduate, seems like a long time ago now though.

As for the maths help, many of the lecturers who were at maths help were my lecturers from the maths department. Although I don't think they were every day and they did have some non maths specialists there too. To be honest, I didn't go to it very much, just used to go directly to my lecturers for help so I'm not entirely sure, though I do recall a coursemate once going and him not knowing the lecturer so it wasn't one of the maths ones.

there is also a 'maths for the terrified' session run in the adsetts every so often.

I'm just about finishing the first year of my LLB Law degree :) Tops marks to (most of) the lecturers and tutors. The support and facilities available to those doing law are top class as well.

Good luck for September!
