Overall I find the polls which are taken up by a large amount of members to be very revealing and also match acurately official statistics. :thumbsup:

It would be interesting to hear what classification people mean when they call themselves OTHER. Maybe if they don't want to declare it openly they could PM Spiro and he can reveal it on their behalf anonimously.

Have to say that I was a little concerned about the sudden interest in our ethnicity.

One of the nice things about the Internet is that I don't know the colour, creed, gender, age or sexuality of people I talk to unless they tell me. And it's great, because I have no preconceptions!

Ideas are what matter to me - where they come from is irrelevant.

Whilst I agree with you Joe, I would hate to see Spyro vilified for starting this thread.

I'm certain that this is an attempt to satisfy his own curiosity, nothing more.

It is also worth remembering that voting is not mandatory.

Nah, I'm not vilifying anyone. I remember we had a thread similar to this quite a while ago and it got in to a real ding-dong.... :)

I suppose it's a 'hot button' for me because usually when I see anything about race and ethnicity on the Forum it means I'm in for a few days of serious moderating! :)

Will be interesting to see how it pans out though - so far it fits my expectations.

and have to say I've always been curious. I have always assume the amount of people from ethnic minoirities on here is relatively lower than in Sheffield as a whole.

What would be really interesting would be to look at how the breakdown of users of SF compares to the breakdown of people with Internet access.

Comparing the demographics of SF users to the population makeup of Sheffield as a whole will inevitably have differences because Internet access is not evenly available to everyone in Sheffield, for example.

Seriously, and forgive me for being naive (sp?), who came up with the term, black and white, i am not WHITE. Hold up a sheet of plain WHITE paper and that is not my colour :rolleyes:.

I'm a kind of "off pinky yellow hue with slightly brown and red tendencies" :hihi:
I've yet to meet one "black" person that is black, most i know are milk chocolatey to deep brown, some people are tan, others are fawn and some are quite pale. :suspect:

Still, i'm not getting at anyone, it's paints quite a good picture of peeps on the forum.

Personally I wish Spyro hadn't used the word RACE, but ever since the victorians used it for a shorthand for ethnicity it passed into the english language to be used as such.
Technically we are all exactly the same race, we all know that, but colloquially the word traditonally has a classification. And it's now too late to use it in the correct form.

Thanks for that, I never new that. I just assumed it meant 'colour' and always did.

Personally i dont think it matters where you come from or the colour of your skin, but i cant see why anyone would be offended by someone asking?! unless they were ashamed or something!!
