Overall I find the polls which are taken up by a large amount of members to be very revealing and also match acurately official statistics. It would be interesting to hear what classification people mean when they call themselves OTHER. Maybe if they don't want to declare it openly they could PM Spiro and he can reveal it on their behalf anonimously. Ann* 04-12-2005, 15:29 I'm English, and it doesn't matter what colour I am. What difference does it make fgs? depoix 04-12-2005, 15:45 Originally posted by Ann_x I'm English, and it doesn't matter what colour I am. What difference does it make fgs? ditto.......why the sudden interest ? JoeP 04-12-2005, 15:51 Have to say that I was a little concerned about the sudden interest in our ethnicity. One of the nice things about the Internet is that I don't know the colour, creed, gender, age or sexuality of people I talk to unless they tell me. And it's great, because I have no preconceptions! Ideas are what matter to me - where they come from is irrelevant. I'm certain that this is an attempt to satisfy his own curiosity, nothing more. It is also worth remembering that voting is not mandatory. Nor is posting though.... I remember we had a thread similar to this quite a while ago and it got in to a real ding-dong.... :) I suppose it's a 'hot button' for me because usually when I see anything about race and ethnicity on the Forum it means I'm in for a few days of serious moderating! :) Will be interesting to see how it pans out though - so far it fits my expectations. Joe Phanerothyme 04-12-2005, 16:05 Originally posted by Ann_x ... it doesn't matter what colour I am. What difference does it make fgs? Well it rather determines your truthful answer to this poll. robbie 04-12-2005, 16:08 Originally posted by liencam Whilst I agree with you Joe, I would hate to see Spyro vilified for starting this thread. I'm certain that this is an attempt to satisfy his own curiosity, nothing more. It is also worth remembering that voting is not mandatory. Nor is posting though.... and have to say I've always been curious. I have always assume the amount of people from ethnic minoirities on here is relatively lower than in Sheffield as a whole. Yodameister 04-12-2005, 16:09 Well I dunno about you lot, but my race is Human. Maybe we have some dwarves or elves among us, who knows :? Plain Talker 04-12-2005, 16:24 Well, I'm hobbit, I think! lol (on acount of my short stature, and my big feet - which aren't actually hairy, oddly enough!) PT utah 04-12-2005, 16:54 I'm white/british. I'm ok with that, I'm ok with what everyone else is :) spyro2000 04-12-2005, 20:28 I was just interested to be honest. There is nothing sinister in it. Im not wanting to start a race debate, just interested in some unofficial figures. Nobody has to vote or post. xafier 04-12-2005, 20:28 Originally posted by Plain Talker Well, I'm hobbit, I think! wow, I always did wonder PT, but I didnt want to be rude and ask ;) me personally I'm a dwarf, its kinda obvious with the ginger hair isnt it? maybe its the lack of big ginger beard, tattoos and carrying a battle axe that gets people so confused with thinking I'm just a regular white brittish guy? :suspect: JoeP 04-12-2005, 22:04 Originally posted by robbie and have to say I've always been curious. I have always assume the amount of people from ethnic minoirities on here is relatively lower than in Sheffield as a whole. What would be really interesting would be to look at how the breakdown of users of SF compares to the breakdown of people with Internet access. Comparing the demographics of SF users to the population makeup of Sheffield as a whole will inevitably have differences because Internet access is not evenly available to everyone in Sheffield, for example. PT - I should have put Hobbit - I do have the hairy toes! Joe :) Plain Talker 04-12-2005, 22:08 Originally posted by JoeP PT - I should have put Hobbit - I do have the hairy toes! Joe :) ah, well, it's amazing what Immac can do (LOL LOL LOL) *looks at her big feet, and imagines a chorus of the jazz song "don't love ya coz ya feet's too big!" lol lol lol* P "drunk after the dev cat meet" T Maddy 04-12-2005, 22:10 Isn't this just the same as the thread regarding how old we are? It doesn't have to become nasty just cos the R word was mentioned..... t020 04-12-2005, 22:29 Originally posted by Ann_x I'm English, and it doesn't matter what colour I am. What difference does it make fgs? Funny, I never saw you protesting on the poll about how old people are. Take the PC hat off and accept this for what it is - a statistical survey. JonnH 04-12-2005, 22:40 Originally posted by spyro2000 What race are you? There are only 10 options allowed otherwise I would have put more. Totally anonymouse of course. What race am i.... well, i think i'm Human  though that's yet to be proved :hihi: (note: haven't read the rest of the thread yet) Though i'd be classed as White/British (English) Seriously, and forgive me for being naive (sp?), who came up with the term, black and white, i am not WHITE. Hold up a sheet of plain WHITE paper and that is not my colour . I'm a kind of "off pinky yellow hue with slightly brown and red tendencies" :hihi: I've yet to meet one "black" person that is black, most i know are milk chocolatey to deep brown, some people are tan, others are fawn and some are quite pale. :suspect: Still, i'm not getting at anyone, it's paints quite a good picture of peeps on the forum. spyro2000 04-12-2005, 22:41 Originally posted by t020 Funny, I never saw you protesting on the poll about how old people are. Take the PC hat off and accept this for what it is - a statistical survey. Well dont t020, totally agree, well obviously I agree as it was me that started the thread. There are too many PC Brigaders out there, and it is those PC brigade who make a mountain out of a molehill. This thread is no different to the age thread whatsoever. I didnt expect there to be any bitterness and PC stuff in this thread, but I should have known :( BoroughGal 04-12-2005, 22:43 Spyro - I'm white british mate. Bet you're glad you asked now.... ;) spyro2000 04-12-2005, 22:44 Originally posted by BoroughGal Spyro - I'm white british mate. Personally I wish Spyro hadn't used the word RACE, but ever since the victorians used it for a shorthand for ethnicity it passed into the english language to be used as such. Technically we are all exactly the same race, we all know that, but colloquially the word traditonally has a classification. And it's now too late to use it in the correct form. spyro2000 04-12-2005, 23:44 Originally posted by muddycoffee Very funny... I don't think! Thanks for that, I never new that. I just assumed it meant 'colour' and always did. Im sure you understand that I meant no harm by the term 'race' JonnH 04-12-2005, 23:55 Originally posted by muddycoffee Very funny... I don't think! Woah, what a sour puss :P koenigsinger 05-12-2005, 02:27 technically I'd be called white british, being caucasian and born in the UK....... but.... nadgers to that! Personally i dont think it matters where you come from or the colour of your skin, but i cant see why anyone would be offended by someone asking?! unless they were ashamed or something!! |
