Hi All

I just bought a Buffalo LinkTheatre, which is great. Works fine on a wired connection, but I can't get it to work wirelessly. I'm fairly new to networking so I'm in need of help.

First of all, I have Netgear DG834G wired to my computer. I'm trying to get the Buff LT to connect, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to do.

The Buff LT has the option to add a new network, which asks for the IP addess and a name, tried a few varaitions of this with no luck. It has has a few set-up options, namely IP ADDRESS, which has been configured automatically and lists the MAC address, IP address, SubnetMask, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS and Default Gatway. These can be entered manually, but they have been entered automatically.

There is also a Network option. Under this is Network type [wired/wireless], Available Network [NETGEAR is currently hightlighted], SSID [which says BUFFALO], Connection [shows as Infastructure] and WEP and Key.

Any idea where to start with all this?? The manual is close to useless, their site is confusing.

Cheers!

the first question is, Your Wireless, Do you have a Router with Wireless?? If not, you may struggle..

You CAN do Ad-Hoc (Computer to Computer) Wireless, but this is difficult to set up, and not always 100% reliable..

Ideally, wireless connections need something called an 'Access Point' - These are mostly Routers or Wireless network Switches (Can pick them up for around £45, i got a ncie one the other day for that)

Once you have one, and set it up, its a simple matter of Turning it on, and searching for available networks, and its all done Automatically via DHCP (though you can config manually if you wish)

All the security, encryption, and MAC address limiting is all done via the Router, you can use either or both methods, and you configure it via a web based interface..

Most Routers come with 4 or more ports so you can have a small Wired network, and (ususually) around 64 Computers Wireless...

now, Im a little confused by your post, you were talking about the NetGear DG834G - which im guessing is a wireless Router, so it should be as simple as.. choosing Infrastructure mode, Scanning for available networks, and then connecting to the netgear.. You set up the SSID on the router configuration pages, and the WEP keys etc..

just scan, select, and save... it should all be set up and assigned via DHCP, its pretty much a standard method accross the board, and I know the PSP does it this way too, and works perfect :)

so.. basically.. Set up the NetGear, (for now turn off WEP and all encryption) set up your Wireless SSID etc..

then, using your LT go through adding, add a wireless (aka infastructure) Automatic settings, (DHCP) and all should be fine :)

Im afraid I have never played with an LT before, so i cant go more in depth, If you still struggle, i'd be happy to come and help you set it up, show you step by step etc...
