View Full Version : It was George Best that died????
Can someone please clear something up for me. It was actually George Best that died recently and not the Queen, or the Prime Minister..given the mass over-reaction (mainly by the media) to his death you would have thought someone important had died.
Whilst I am sympathetic to his family and any death, famous or not, is a sad experience, I can't help but feel once again this country and it's media have created a mass frenzy over someone who in my mind isn't worth all the hassle.
There are people who die everyday that have given a hell of a lot more to society than George Best ever did. Fair enough..he was ONCE a grea t footballer. But that was decades ago..since then he's done nothing of any worth apart from **** his life up the wall.
NOTE TO PRESS...He's died..lets move onto more worthwhile news and people.
Englishlady 03-12-2005, 17:28 Totally agree Wibbles.
It's sad for his family and close friends and that's about it.
I think it is the media though that's totally hyped it all up.
The tabloids didn't have much good to say about him when he was alive and now they're making out a big deal over his death:loopy:
Actually, if you go back to his heyday, the only other thing that was coming out of Northern Ireland at that time was sectarian violence and terrorism.
Also, the fact there has been such a turn out probably indicates that during his life the people of Northern Ireland still thought something of him, irrespective of the media's interest in the man.
His lifestyle also showed soccer team managers that things would need doing differently in the future if they were to stop other players of genius going off the deep end.
I'm not sure whether it was media hype that got 300,000 people on the streets for the funeral. I think it was that Best was a living link to a time when Northern Ireland was famous in teh UK for one thing - violence and 'The Troubles'.
The funeral wasn't that of George Best the man, but was more to do with the legend that he had become to the people from Northern Irelnd at a time when they genuinely felt that ****-all good was coming from their country.
He's dead, he's buried and the image of Best on the football pitch changing to Best dying of multiple organ failure in the week when the Government decided to liberalise drink laws may yet best illustrate how even the best talent can be thrown away.

To be honest I wouldnt have cared any more on any less if it was the Queen of the PM either. A death is a death unless its someone I now personally. harsh but true.

I agree... unless it was Billie Joe Armstrong. I would want people to leave me alone for aslong as it took to get over his death. I would just stay in my bedroom listening to green day over and over again (i do that anyway!). My life just wouldnt be the same without him :(
Positive side is, hes not dead, hes alive and well and green day are doing another tour and releasing another album next year!!!!!! :D
He was a footballing genius.
My Mum came to my room this morning and said that George Best's funeral is on the TV.
I said 'He's hardly Princess Diana'.

He's a hell of a lot more deserving of adulation than that tart.
A great - one of the greatest - footballer(s), who brought pleasure to millions, and who illustrated that football can bring people of all persuasions together.
It's brilliant that so many people turned out.

Princess D done more for society than Best ever did, but then again they are both still humans, and a death is a death.
I wouldnt have gone to George Bests funeral even if I was in the area.
That's a rather interesting opinion Spyro.........what did Di do for society exactly - except sell lots of papers, magazines and make bulimia fashionable?

Exactly what uve just said, thats a lot more then George ever did ;)
muddycoffee 03-12-2005, 23:26 I find it difficult to imagine how anyone under 40 years of age can have much respect for him. As I have only ever know him as a paralytic fat bloke making an embarrasment of himself. I never saw him even on the TV in a football kit. All this stuff is the usual press stuff about building them up before bringing them down.
I am minded to mention that he did have genius in some areas as some of my friends in their late 50s remember going to see him.
But this was so long ago, and so irrelevant to us today that I feel it has been blown out of all proportion. Shame on the press and the BBC for making such a song and dance about it. The press coverage I find shameful and totally oportunistic and over the top.
With the thoughts of spiro2000, a man's death is a death. The guy was a son, a brother and a father. I have the greatest respect for those who really knew and loved him.
RIP
scottishdude 04-12-2005, 09:35 Ok he WAS a great footballer. He was also a great drinker who had a problem and when he was given a 2nd chance with a new liver he said thank you very much I can carry on drinking again!!
A mention in the news and a minutes silence before kick off at a push is all he merited.
It's a great shame someone else didn't get that liver to appreciate it and probably still be alive today.

It's a great shame someone else didn't get that liver to appreciate it and probably still be alive today. George was an alcoholic and, from what I've learned recently from a friend whose partner's family are friendly with the Bests, his mother and grandfather were both alcoholics and his sister still is. Alcoholism is an illness (and can be hereditary), not just an addiction, and there is no "cure" (there are no "ex-alcholics", just abstaining alcoholics).
George did try to abstain on several occasions but, as with any illness for which there is no cure, remission can be short-lived.
I've pointed this out in another thread....George was taking anti-rejection drugs, which lowered his immunity to infection. He firstly got a kidney infection, from which he was recovering, when his got the lung infection which ultimately killed him. Apparently, there was no problem with his liver ~ no sclerosis, no infection....nothing!
People seem to want to concentrate on George's drink addiction and blame that directly for his death....time to get their facts straight IMO!
scottishdude 04-12-2005, 11:39 But did he have to drive when he was drunk? and put other lives a risk!!!!!!!!!!
I think that the hereditory part is bull, we all have the choice of which path we take.
Phanerothyme 04-12-2005, 11:50 I can't believe they cleared the schedules for 4 hours whilst pundits described (in stultifying detail) what it was you were seeing on screen.
It was a newsworthy event, sure, but it was given the attention of a state funeral on the BBC.
Overblown celebrity cultism.

Yes absolutely true.
What are we going to have to put up with next?
The live birth of the next Beckham child? :gag:

Who would give a toss if the Queen died?
At least George smiled now and then!
Best was born with a God given talent and entertained millions. The Queen was born into a position, and does absolutely sod all except grimace.
RIP George. You lived your life to the full and never asked for sympathy.
I drank Gin to excess in your honour last night.

Post of the month for me!
Nice one and I agree with it totally.
I watched the funeral procession make its way down to where they were conducting the service- and it brought back to my mind a lot of the bitterness I have towards clingers on.
I've seen this before somethere I thought- oh hang on- I remember this scene familiar with the Princess Diana 'tragedy'
With people throwing stuff on the car in 'grief'
Let me get this straight-
George Best is for me no symbol of how great this country is or was- Diana was.
For someone like George Best, an alcoholic, wife beating and general arsehole for the best 30+ years of his life to receive the 'ovation' that he got- absolutely sickened me.
Diana, made something of her life, she came from nothing to become someone and used her status to help others- George Best did not do this and with scant disregard for his own talent- blew it big time.
He's not a legend- he's an idiot... the 20+ years he served Man Utd disappeared from my memory the second he turned to the drink and beating women.
If people think that constitutes becoming a 'legend' in this country- I really do pity you.
Lindseyw 04-12-2005, 22:09 Ok so I know I am gonna get my arsed kicked for this, but please help me understand.
How on earth can you get upset about someone dying when you don't know them, now I see the remorse and sadness, but actually falling apart and crying and travelling to the funeral ????

I would give a toss if the Queen died- because she and her family, has done more for this country than George Best has and she has not shown us up across the globe like George did.
Best was a self made millionaire, who had talent, like Gazza and blew it big time- he has no-one to blame but himself and I dont feel sorry for him one bit- the only person I feel sorry for are George's secret kids who he has never bothered to see, I dont feel one ounce of pity for Calum as well, who is already following in daddys footsteps.
The queen cant give off any weaknesses at all- she was not allowed to cry in public, for the royals it is seen as a weakness as is not allowed.
Maybe if George had asked for help instead of turning to booze all the time, he would still be here this xmas time eh!
AND no I didnt drink to his memory- I have more respect for people that have done something with their lives and not destroyed themselves like he did.
Guderian 04-12-2005, 22:24 Well dear Angelus, you use the Queen as your idol and I will use George.
I think I'll have the better time!
And dont whinge and bother with your predictable pious reply.
George had faults.
The monarchy IS a fault.
spyro2000 04-12-2005, 22:36 Ive said it before and Ill say it again. If I dont personally know the person then I do not care, wether that be George Best or the Queen.
When I say I dont care, dont take that as I am Inhuman, I still see any death as a great tradegy, but its still just a death, a death is a death as long as I dont know the person.

You have every right to be an anti-monarchist, but the Queen herself is probably the finest example of a good, maybe even a great person. She smiles quite often and is a credit to the office. Probably hasn't been a better monarch for a long time. If you are going to have a go at the monarchy you should really have a go at her uncle who chucked it in to marry his American Slapper or some of the hangers on like Prince Edward or Princess Michael.
George Best? Hero of 30 years ago and nothing but shame for the last 25 years. No doubt we will have to go through the same rubbish when Gazza [or whatever he's called ] kills himself with lager.

I agree with you Lindsey
Its a bit sad really isnt it when people start 'hero worshiping' people just because they have popped off the mortal coil.

If you want to idolise George then fine, be my guest.. will you do the same with Gazza when he snuffs it too?
Another alcoholic idol who lays his hands on women?
Some idols mate- but hay, whatever floats your boat I suppose
George had MANY MANY faults- and I wonder how many more skeletons are going to come out the closet now he is not around- I'm particularly waiting to find out how many more 'secret' kids he has around the world and I will be fascinated to read how he beat most of his wives and lovers about- also his 'beloved' son as well.
The monarchy is all that is good about the UK - its a symbol of what is good about this country - allegedly.
I dont like the royals- but I'd still take the queen and princess di over a alchi, wife beater.

Explain peoples reaction to Di then?
Now THAT was ridiculous. If you want to get all moral about it (and you usually do), what about her unfaithfulness??
I suppose it wasnt her fault, and poor Di blah blah blah.
You have SO much in common with United fans Angelus.
They play at Elland Road.
