View Full Version : Common Room - Warning
ashmorel 03-12-2005, 13:41 Hi,
Some friends and I were in the common room (new bar above the Forum) last night playing pool and had a really good time until it came to pay for the pool table and they tried charging us for drinks that we didn't have. Seeing as we paid for our drinks seperately at the bar and never put drinks on the table bill then this came as quite a surprise to us.
At one point during the night, there was a group of people who stood next to our table and I can only think that they tried it on and bought drinks trying to charge them to our table so please be careful of this when going to the common room in future. We found the attitude of some of the bar staff quite appalling to be honest and they were basically accusing us of lying and trying it on. It was only when we made it quite clear that we would not pay for someone elses drinks that they relented and took them off our bill. I would suggest you make it clear to the bar staff that no drinks are to be charged to your table to avoid a repeat of this.
Don't think we'll be going there again after last night because of the attitude of the bar staff which is a shame because other than that, we had a top night (although I'm suffering for it today!!).
Cheers
antisocial 03-12-2005, 14:11 I was in there for the second time (first time in pool bit rather than booths) Thursday night and really didn't like the atmosphere in there......
Don't know if it was I'm a scruffy rock type and its a bit clean cut in there, but it was just all a bit heavy handed and threatening.....
Too much of an 'goodfella' bouncer presence, and too much secret nods, handshakes and whispering going on....... :suspect:
Not to mention...first time we went in it was sub artic temperatures outside, we'd walked from Netheredge so were freezing eventhough we had about 40 layers on and the bouncer had a go at the other half about his hoody as we got through the door....ok not keen on places with a dress policy anyway....but sometimes the weather does play a part in choice of clothes....
mr.blaze 03-12-2005, 21:26 Goodfellas bouncers lol, the bouncers in there are ok.
they told us to take our hats off as we went in last week. Didn't care as I was already doing that anyway, who'd keep a wooly hat on indoors, it's for keeping my head toasty outside.

Some places by law require you to take your hat off for CCTV purposes.

But that's no good...they'd know who the baddies were then. :suspect:
antisocial 03-12-2005, 22:58 Dress restrictions are a pet peeve of mine anyway, why is my money not as good because I choose to dress a certain way. I can see the point if what you're wearing would cause aggro - football shirts etc, but just because you choose to express yourself (or not) by not following the herd.......or choose to dress appropriately for the weather rather than freeze your bits off.......ridiculous!
As I said they could be alright, maybe I'm just used to a more laid back easy going kind of place....
Had a lot of trouble with the bouncers in the Common Room just being generally rude and unaccomodating. Won't be going back again...

Not the statute law actually, just certain venues have this door policy. It's a similar request to the one in banks and post offices which ask bikers to remove their crash helmets.

to turn it around, why should they care that you want to dress differently, if you want to come into their venue then you have to abide by their rules. They aren't running a public service.
To actually answer the question though, it alters how people perceive the venue, if they want to make it seem a bit more upmarket then they insist on smart clothes.
michael_v2 04-12-2005, 10:06 we tried to get into the common rooms last night, at about half nine but were turned away because it was invite only. was this true, (there were small signs in doors) or was it an excuse not to allow groups of more than 3 lads getting in because of the expected football violence.

In this statement you seem to suggest certain dress restrictions are acceptable in that you say those in football shirts would cause aggro.
I have to say that some people do find those wearing hoodies appear threatening.
As a rule dress codes are for two reasons - one is to exclude people who might misbehave and the other is to maintain a certain smart, classy feel to the venue.
Anyway, the Common Room: I have been once and it's a nice place, but didn't seem to have much atmosphere.
Now I will say it was a cold Sunday evening and not very busy, which will give me a different experience to a busy Saturday night, but that said the Devonshire Cat was busy, as was the Cavendish.
Eyelikedurt 05-12-2005, 18:54 I frickin' love the place. I managed to spend a silly amount of time there and grew to love it more than toasted marshmallows. The doormen are all really sound even when im reluctant to leave at the end of the night, and the bar staff are very accomodating especially with my ridiculously specific Rum and Cokes (2 limes please!!).
I noticed on Friday that the mix of people was really varied. Im not going to name all the 'types' of people, but it was good to see a 'football shirt' talking to a 'hoody' and that kind of stuff.
Anyway - love the place :D
2 LIMES PLEASE!!!
I had the best pint EVER in the common room!
Words can't describe how good it was, took the first sip and was soooooooooo amazed by the taste!!!!!
Most expensive pint EVER as well though!!!!
As for the bouncers, they weren't the best, demaning ID on a sunday night, me and my friends were clearly over 18!
Oh well, definitly recommend the place if you've never been..try the Stella!!!!!!!
We were there on Saturday night for a leaving party for a friend going to Australia. He hadn't handed out invites just told people to come down. They wouldn't let us in til we said who it was.
It was a good night, tis a nice place.

sheffield venues have now adopted a policy from the police of challenge 21.....quite simply if you look 21 or younger you will be challenged for your I.D. I know its a pain when your over 18, but hey ho, venues dont need their licences up for auction for letting in underage either....just live with it for the next couple of years till you obviously look over 21....:hihi: :hihi:
rocketpig 05-12-2005, 23:11 i love the place, i think its great- there's nowhere else like it in sheff that i know off.
cheers for the advice on the tabs, we always buy drinks on the tab (mostly because we like the waitress who comes to the pool table)
but yeah cool place, i like it
and to all those complainers about the dress code, if you don't like it, don't go there......simple really
We had the waiters/waitresses but paid for our drinks when they brought them.
mr craig 05-12-2005, 23:28 The bouncers in there are some of the friendliest (sp????) i've met in Sheffield (admittedly i'm in there about 4 times a week). As for the issue with the drinks i can see how it would happen, but they shouldn'd be able to charge drinks to your table unless they've got the silver card that they give you.
rocketpig 05-12-2005, 23:32 i think the bouncers are great there, one time a couple of chaps wanted to play doubles with me and my mate, we were in competetion so not keen, they kept bothering us, bouncer cottened on and told them to bugger of.........great
