View Full Version : Car insurance renewal- what exactly does it involve?
Claire28 03-12-2005, 06:19 I'm due for renewal with Tesco very soon, but I have found a quote with another company to be half as much as what Tesco have quoted me!
Do i have to phone tesco and give them notice that I'm leaving them?
What do I have to ask Tesco for, eg, some sort of certificate confirming I hace got a 1 yr NCB with them?
Basically what do you need to do from A-Z?
Many thanks all!!!!!! xx
Check your contract with them to see if it is set up for automatic annual renewal. If it is, or if you're not sure, just pop a cancellation letter off to them.
Every time I've changed I've been sent no claims bonus details from my former insurer, which I have to forward on.
just phone the number on the renewal quote and tell them you've had a better offer. Ask them to send you your No Claims certificate.
You may find that suddenly they can do it cheaper than the quote said, but don't be rushed into anything, they'll tell you the offer is only open whilst you stay on the phone, so be very clear whether it's a better offer than the other quote if you decide to stay with them.
tslogf74 03-12-2005, 08:36 Surely if you don't sign and return the renewal forms they send you then they wont renew it? Simply take insurance with the other company who may or may not ask for proof of NCD at some point.
Did you use confused.com to get your quotes?
Claire28 03-12-2005, 08:58 Test drive magazine actually. Its a fantastic price, tesco are robbing me blind!!!
Silverjet 03-12-2005, 18:14 You should definitely ring them to say you don't want to renew cos if you send a letter and it gets lost in the post...they renew it automatically and charge you a cancellation fee and say "you didn't call us". It happens all the time with insurers.
You should ask them for a proof of NCD letter.
One other thing which i'm sure you will have done but...check that this other company are giving you the same cover, features, excess etc... and that they're a reputable company cos you don't want some unknown high street broker thats about to go bankrupt just as your car gets stolen do ya????
Anyway...good luck with it.
Claire28 04-12-2005, 05:39 The insurer is called quinn direct. Anyone heard of them??
Pseudonym 04-12-2005, 08:27 Well, it seems that Quinn Direct isn't a fly-by-night company but reviews of them are mixed... here. (http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews85556.html) The company looks to be fairly substantial (i.e. not likely to collapse and cost you money any time soon), see here (http://money.guardian.co.uk/insurance_/motor/story/0,1456,1450352,00.html) for details.
And young Sean Quinn (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/richlist/person/0,,22784,00.html) appears to be doing very nicely so far! ;)
MonkeyLover 26-01-2010, 18:32 Sorry for raking up this old thread, but I wondered if anyone can advise me.
My car insurance with the Post Office expired on 24th January, and I have renewed my insurance with another company after doing a search for the cheapest.
I have just checked my credit card account on line and noticed that £359+ is due to be paid out of my account on the 28th Jan. I haven't spent this amount of money on my card in one transaction, and the credit card company don't know who the payee is until that date! I have told the credit card company that i haven't authorised this payment, and they have stopped my card, whilst investigations are taking place. I then assumed that it was my card that had been cloned.
I suddenly realised that it could be the Post Office who have automatically renewed my insurance without my authority, as I have had a text from them today to give me a number to ring them if i need to make a claim.
Does anyone know if they are allowed to do this? I have received no policy or phone calls or emails about the renewal.
Claire28 the no claims bonus is your property and should always be sent out with renewals, also have you checked the Quinn Direct quote as they have a compulsory £250.00 excess plus any voluntary excess which you may have asked for. The £250 excess also applies to windscreen claims. Before you go ahead compare it with your present company (Tesco) you may well find you do not have a like for like policy.
MonkeyLover, under FSA regulations your insurance providers have legally got to advise you of the renewal premium prior to renewal, they have no right to take your payment automatically unless it is direct debit. Have you checked with them to see if they have renewed the policy and taken the said amount on your card?

No I have not checked with the insurance co, cos I only just thought about it tonight. They have not contacted me in any way, apart from the text i got giving me a phone number for any claims, but that could just be an oversight, as my insurance ran out with them on the 23rd. If it is them they have also got the date wrong, cos the payment wasnt scheduled to to come out of my account till the 28th, so I would have had a couple of days with no insurance! The credit card company have stopped the card now anyway, so they will not get their money!
It could even be nothing to do with car insurance, just somebody cloning my card, won't find out till the 28th, if ever.
I didn't think anyone would be allowed to just take money without prior arrangement, but you never know, and who reads all the small print?
Thank you for your reply.

Found out this morning that they have actually done this, as the new documents came through the post this morning. I have rung them and gave the poor woman a right earful, and have cancelled the insurance. She said they are going to give me a full refund (but I still don't know whether the credit card company have actually paid it to the Post Office or not).
If I dont get a full refund, I will kick up a further stink and take them to the financial ombudsman!
