Yes I shall be having a good toss, when I get home from work tommorrow.

Stocked up with flour eggs, lemon juice and stuff at the weekend.

Strange hey the original idea was to use stuff up in the cupboards before lent, nowadys the supermarkets have all the pancake stuff piled high and on bogof.

Well, is it me, or do people not make a deal about this anymore? I haven't seen any adverts for Jif lemon on TV or seen any mention of it. I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for this thread!

Cheers, although I prob won't have any this year as I'm on a diet!

Most definitely will be having pancakes preferably dripping with golden syrup. It'll give me agonsing toothache but it has to be done.

Why would anybody want to buy ready made pancakes when they are so easy and quick to make. There must be some idle folk about.

I'll have one covered in Ash, and one smothered with raspberry jam

Easy Fletch.

4oz plain flour
pinch salt
2 medium eggs
7 fl oz milk
3 fl oz cold water

Whisk all together, adding wet ingredients a little at a time.
Whisk some more.
Leave to rest for about 15 mins.

Enjoy

Did anyone elses pancakes turn out about half an inch thick? i think i put too much mixture in. I tried putting only a little bit in but it just formed a small thick circle in the middle of the pan. Needless to say after a few bites it went in the bin.

It's called Mardi Gras here, French for Fat Tuesday. They celebrate it all the way from New Orleans along the Gulf Coast. Mainly in New Orleans where they have huge parades with decorated floats and marching bands with people throwing beads and trinkets into the crowds. Lots of food and drink. Everyone having a good time before they have to fast for Lent. Just an excuse to parteeee. One giant pancake party.

"Laissez Les Bon Temps Roullez" Let the Good Times Roll.

So tomorrow on Ash Wednesday make sure you don't make the mistake like I did last year and tell a Catholic that they have a smudge on their foreheads and offer to wipe it off with a tissue. Oops sorry I'm a heathen! It's a symbol of the ashes of Christ apparently. Please help me out someone who knows why it's done as I don't want to upset anyone else.

You can make savoury, southern-france-style crepes if you replace the water with biere blonde... sounds mad but they really, reallt taste good, and they come out all light and fluffy!!! Great with egg, ham and cheese...!

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but try putting a little oil round the pan with a brush (so it covers the whole surface), otherwise try just adding a little more water to the mix!

I have never put water in my pancake batter, made a bit too much so had pancakes before pub, pancakes after pub and pancakes for breakfast, also envisaging pancakes for tea (nearly brought some for lunch as well).

As every year, I suddenly remembered how easy to make nice pancakes are and wonder why i don't have them more than one day a year (clearly because I have so many on that day of the year!)

As I haven't got a suitable frying pan for making pancakes I will either buy some, or make waffles instead.

Favourite pancake dish : pancakes stuffed with spinach, ricotta, pine nuts and gorgonzola, topped with bechamel sauce, grated parmasan and breadcrumbs.

I'm hungry now.

Surely you mean "Cif" - we had to change the name as the Spaniards had problems pronouncing the word. Chuffin' 'ell :D

Ooooh, that sounds lovely!
Do you have a recipe for it?! I have been looking for a nice recipe for savoury pancakes, because in a moment of wisdom last week I invited some friends round for dinner and promised we would have pancakes.
Spent ages looking on BBC website and on waitrose website at recipes, but nothing really inspired me, but that would be perfect because it has to be vegetarian too!

I use this recipe, but roll the cheese & spinach filling in pancakes instead of using lasagne.

it is very rich so you don't need a huge portion, unless you are a greedy git like me.

This is a good veggie dish too :

You're serious enough about pancakes to have a closely guarded secret recipe, yet you are unaware of what day pancake day is?

I make ordinary pancakes to eat with lemon and sugar, jam or treacle but I also make small lemon and sultana ones too. I replace the plain flour with self raising and add lemon and sultanas to the batter. The batter should be thicker than for ordinary pancakes too. Put a sponfull in a hot, greased pan and wait for the little bubbles to rise to the top then flip over and cook the other side. Totally yummy!

If you want the real thing there's always Double Dutch - the pancake joint in Orchard Square.

Me? I'm staying in with my jug of maple syrup ;)
Might whip up a batch of pancakes later on too.

I will be missing the pancakes tonight and eating lots at the weekend when my mum comes home from the south. although for lent im going to give up crisps, i know i'm supposed to devour an entire bag of sugar and my body weight in oranges in order to get me through those long weeks ahead but my vice is pure savory. When i was a little girl at school the nuns would paint a cross on our foreheads in ashes on ash wednesday.

easy recipe - no measuring required.

crack and gently beat as many eggs as you think you can eat in a bowl.

keep adding small amounts of sifted flour until you have a sticky, gooey mess that sticks to the spoon.

Then keep adding small amounts of milk and mixing well until it is the consistency of double cream.

Then leave the mixture for an hour, give it a good stir so its properly mixed, and drop spoonfuls of mixture into a hot buttered frying pan.

As a matter of Interest it is Thursday tomorrow,
but.
The name Shrove, comes from the old word "Shrive" which means to confess.
Pancakes were eaten on this day to use up all rich foods before lent.
Pancakes were eaten, and pancake races were held in towns and villages.
