View Full Version : Do they still do the Lord Mayor's parade anymore? John 22-02-2004, 13:01 I haven't seen one for years. Michael_W 22-02-2004, 13:07 Do you mean the Lord Mayors Parade or the Rag Parade ? I don't know if they have either, neither or both. Rich 22-02-2004, 14:32 They stopped the Rag parade, cos some morons started getting a bit carried away in a state of alcohol induced retardedness on Rag days so they stopped them doing it on safety grounds. As for the Lord Mayor's Parade, they probably binned that cos of the cost, chuffing tight arsed Labour council  Andy C 22-02-2004, 15:45 I think the Lord Mayors parade still happens, cannot remember what time of year though. John 22-02-2004, 18:32 Yes, the Lord Mayors parade is the missing keyword I was seeking - Now doing a google search bring me back to.... Sheffield forum!! It seems that it is still going another thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1679) max 22-02-2004, 19:20 Originally posted by Rich As for the Lord Mayor's Parade, they probably binned that cos of the cost, chuffing tight arsed Labour council  Oh that is rich, pun intended. If they used council tax payers money on something frivolous such as a parade you'd whinge about that too, no doubt. But they haven't binned it so you can complain about waste of tax payers money.:loopy: hutch 22-02-2004, 19:32 The rag parades in the 60/70s were brilliant but when Fargate and the Moor closed to traffic they seemed to fade away, MrH 22-02-2004, 22:11 I was on the organising committee for the Lord Mayor's Parade for many years. It was not organised by the Council - in fact they charged us for several of their services. The combination of increasing costs for organising it, the possibility of the Police charging for their presence, increased pedestrianisation and the tram route, and reduced interest from organisations and companies who wanted to enter floats meant that it was no longer viable so we decided to stop organising it in its traditional form. It was absorbed into the Childrens Festival and became a walking Parade featuring well over 1,000 children from schools throughout Sheffield. In this form it was organised by Destination Sheffield, although I am not sure what form that organisation takes now! Banksia 23-02-2004, 05:45 Back in the sixties I worked at Winston's on Snig Hill. The Rag Parade came past the shop where the other staff and I stood watching. The next thing I remember there was a stampede and I was swept up and thrown on the back of one of the floats along with several other kidnap victims. It wasn't until we reached the bottom of the moor that I was able to escape. The barrier on the float gave way under the strain and we tumbled out onto the road. Feeling very battered and with nearly all the buttons ripped from the back of my blouse I walked all the way back to work where my boss was furiously awaiting my return. But, it was all innocent fun and I'm sorry to hear that the Rag Parade is no more. |
