View Full Version : Is it alright to eat an old bird?

Got a posh waitrose guinea fowl at the back of the freezer that`s been frozen for six months. Packaging says freezing it is ok but it should be eaten within one month. Wanna eat it and dont wanna chuck it out. Why is alright to eat it after a month and not after six?

Freezing just slows down the decay, it doesn't stop it completely.

6 months is way too long, bin it.

This is one I'm not entirely sure about billythecat. I keep things in the freezer for months and then eat them far past the one month specified on the packaging. I suppose you've got to way up the odds: £4 / £5 down the drain, possibly getting away with it or a couple of days spent on the toilet.

Disclaimer: if you eat it and get sick I'm not taking any responsibility

I think in a deep freeze, you can safely freeze something for 3 months.

I'd probably risk it after 4 months, but not 6.

Surely if it`s cooked propery all the bugs will be killed won`t they?

If it's a decent freezer I'd say get it eaten. Make sure you cook it through properly and you'll be fine - the 'best before' dates on most food errs massively on the side of caution.

Besides, a few bugs never did anybody any harm. And if they did then just remember what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and all that

It's not the bugs thats the problem, it's the toxins the bugs produce that arn't destroyed by cooking that are the problem. Thats why re-heating food is not a good idea, each time you reheat the food the bugs produce a bit more toxin, which accumulates up to the point where it's dangerous.

When you freeze something you just slow down the bugs, you don't stop them.

Am I the only one that thinks that this thread title is a bit...wrong!

I have kept frozen chicken breasts longer than that and they are fine. I used to have a book which told you how long you could keep stuff in your freezer, but I cant find it now. My old freezer also had this info printed in symbol form ... has anyone else got a book or a freezer with this info in?

How did we survive without sell by dates? My mum and dad had a freezer back in the late sixties and used to cut up their own meat and freeze it - it kept for months ... I understood that although the bacteria multiplication wasnt killed it was suspended whilst food was frozen, but could begin again when thawed.

PS I had hoped this thread was rude from reading the title :P

Get it cooked and eaten. As long as your freezer is a reasonable one then I would have no worries about eating it. It's going to be cooked. People worry to much.. If it had been in the ice box of a fridge then throw it away but freezer, fine.
