View Full Version : How to repair a broken scanner wendygs 29-11-2005, 21:08 Is there anything I can do to repair a scanner? it's not working because I dropped it on the floor :( Draggletail 29-11-2005, 21:12 Wendygs, Longshanks and myself have a scanner you can have for nowt if you want it. Not sure if we have the drivers - I can look if you like. Draggle sccsux 29-11-2005, 21:32 Originally posted by Draggletail Not sure if we have the drivers - I can look if you like. Draggle If you don't (have the drivers, that is) then you can (in all probability) get them from DriversGuide (http://driversguide.com). The site requires registration (which is free). However, you can log in to the members area directly with the following credentials: username: drivers password: all wendygs 29-11-2005, 21:43 WOW that's really kind of you. when/where/how to collect. Mega thanks. By the way does that mean this scanner is either clapped out or too difficult to repair? Phanerothyme 29-11-2005, 21:58 Unless it is an expensive scanner, it would probably cost more to repair than to replace. If it's a drum scanner or slide scanner, then I'd contact the manufacturer. Often times its the case that the fine toothed belt used to position the scanner head has become damaged or misaligned. When you say it doesn't work, how doesn't it work? wendygs 29-11-2005, 22:33 Exactly that; dead as a doornail; nothing; no lights; no sound; no movement. Draggletail 30-11-2005, 00:15 Wendy, Have just been down to to the garage, the scanner is a Mustek scan express 6000P, a bit dusty, a few years old..... I can't find the power supply I'm afraid ( I swear it was with the scanner but we moved house) It does come with the lead to connect to the computer though. I'm happy to drop it off any daytime this week wherever you like, work address, supermarket car park, whatever. You can collect if you prefer. Let us know if you want it :) wendygs 30-11-2005, 08:35 Yes please. very much appreciated I'll PM you. Thanks Wendy wendygs 30-11-2005, 19:33 Draggletail, many thanks for the scanner; I hope to try and install it Saturday evening because it looks more complicated than it seems and I've got some urgent work to complete this week.  Draggletail 30-11-2005, 19:54 You're very welcome wendygs. I hope your old power supply is compatible with the scanner. if not, you never know - there may be someone on here with a spare one kicking about ;) karl101 01-12-2005, 08:02 You could always try to convert your old scanner into a camera: http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/tech/scanner.html K. neeeeeeeeeek 01-12-2005, 08:22 If you dropped it then chuck it in the bin!! You may have problems with drivers for the Mustec scanner if you are using XP, they stopped supporting them a while ago.... I dunno why this guy didn't just mount a mirror on the underside of the cover. We've done this to approximate a transparency scanner. Drop the slide into the projector, shine the projector at the scanner lid open at 45 deg. Presto - Full platen flatebed scan at 600dpi! With USB LIDE scanners topping £50 they're almost disposable! wendygs 03-12-2005, 20:22 Originally posted by karl101 You could always try to convert your old scanner into a camera: http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/tech/scanner.html K. You're very welcome to it if you want but please let me know soon because otherwise it's going in the bin. :D wendygs 03-12-2005, 20:33 Originally posted by sccsux If you don't (have the drivers, that is) then you can (in all probability) get them from DriversGuide (http://driversguide.com). No power supply though. No more old scanners either ;) Draggle wendygs 04-12-2005, 08:05 Grateful thanks again Draggle, unfortunately I'm having problems accessing the driver.com site at the moment, so I'll keep trying and let you know what it says when I get a finding. Will you mind if I give this scanner to one of the charity shops down the road for them to sort it out? Fine by me on both counts wendygs :) Titian 04-12-2005, 14:02 Mine went kaput last year and it was all due to the bulb going. Apparently it is cheaper to buy a new one than try and fit a new bulb, so they gave me a new PSC Draggletail 04-12-2005, 14:45 Originally posted by bonny Mine went kaput last year and it was all due to the bulb going. Anyhow just to let you know I havent been able to check that link yet and will be away quite a bit this month (got to keep MM on their toes) so I'll get back in touch on my return. Also anyone dead keen on trying their hand at transforming the scanner which I dropped on the floor in to a viable camera please feel free to post; although it's getting close, I just havent had time to chuck it yet either. By the way does anyone know if there are any environmental issues to consider eg like disposing of an old fridge etc. Thanks again pal. very much appreciated. wendygs 09-01-2006, 06:35 Have just checked for the Epson perfection 1200 driver and as the best fit is one for WinME O/S I'm not sure if it will work with XP but if it does then I am very interested in draggletails kind offer. So today is the very last chance for anyone remotely interested in transforming my busted scanner in to a camera before it goes in the bin. As I'm not sure what to do with the Mustek scanner which cant be much use or ornament to anyone without a driver it will probably follow suit because I cant see the point on fobbing any of the charities off with it unless it can be put to good use. wendygs 29-01-2006, 22:53 Have just checked for the Epson perfection 1200 driver and as the best fit is one for WinME O/S I'm not sure if it will work with XP but if it does then I am very interested in draggletails kind offer. Rightyho; that one hit the dust and now I've got another one which is about to go the same way but I'd really like to know of any environmentally friendly disposal methods before it also hits the dust. The problem with this one is it isnt broke but without the drivers and power pack it wont work. :D Replies urgently wanted. Thanks wendygs 29-01-2006, 23:10 Right now I'm looking at the Epson Perfection 1200U scanner and need to know whether it's going down the same path as its 2 forerunners or indeed whether it's worth investing any time on downloading the relevant drivers. Just plugged it in switched on the power and am very sorry to report absolutely NOTHING has happened. Does that mean it's also dead or do I need to try a new fuse????? Thanks wendy I tested the scanner the night before I gave it you Wendy (as I said when I PMd you about it) The scanner powered up perfectly well up and a pop up appeared proclaiming 'new USB device found' If you think it's no good, I'm happy to have it back and am willing to collect. Draggle. wendygs 30-01-2006, 05:49 Hi draggle dont doubt you for a minute. Have had loads of probs with a load of new stuff which I'm trying to sort out and as a non-techie it's just taking time, so as it should work, I just need to find out why it wont work here. Thanks Wendy wendygs 30-01-2006, 07:48 helps to switch it on; I was expecting it to work in the same way as my old scanner which just plugged in to the mains and a USB cable in to the PC so didnt think to look for a separate on/off switch.  |
