Someone told me there is a "Thistle" hotel either opening or being built in Sheffield. Does anybody know anything about this as I have some relatives coming up later in the year and they say Thistle hotels are very good.

The nearest Thistle Hotel is in Manchester!

Nhoare, The Thistle Hotel is to be built in the spot next to the Winter Gardens. It is not due to be open for business till Summer 2005 so you may need to think of an alternative for your family:rolleyes:

17/12/2003 - WORK BEGINS ON NEW CITY CENTRE HOTEL


Preliminary work on construction of the new city centre hotel has begun following the signing of the Development Agreement between the city council and Macdonald Hotels, with the project scheduled for completion by autumn 2005.


An integral part of the £130 million Heart of the City scheme, the luxury 4-star Macdonald Hotel will be amongst Sheffield’s finest, featuring 161 executive bedrooms and suites, a state-of-the-art ‘Vital’ leisure club and spa and various dining options. The hotel will also feature the largest conference and banqueting facilities in the city.


Preparatory work will begin before Christmas, with construction expected to commence in February next year. The section of Norfolk Street between the Town Hall and the hotel site will be closed from spring 2004 but a pedestrian route will be maintained for the majority of the construction period and every effort will be made to minimise disruption in the area.


Chief Executive of the Council, Bob Kerslake, said: “The commercial development is the final phase of this very successful scheme and will bring the jobs and further investment that we need. The hotel represents great confidence in Sheffield’s future and will enhance our growing reputation as an exciting leisure and cultural destination.”


Bill Kirk, Acting Chief Executive of Sheffield One, added: “The Heart of the City project is one of the key elements of the Masterplan and is fundamental to boosting Sheffield’s economy so starting work on the hotel is a significant milestone.”


Patrick Dempsey, Chief Executive of Macdonald Hotels, commented: “Macdonald Hotels are delighted that work is now getting underway in Sheffield. When I went to winter gardens the other week there was a big sign on the boards surrounding the space for the hotel describing exactly what will be there etc....
