The next Sheffield Humanist Society meeting will be "The Case for Secularism" with Terry Sanderson, President of the National Secular Society (http://www.secularism.org.uk/)
Please note that there is a change of day, time and venue from our usual meetings
Across the Middle East brave people are challenging and overthrowing the old dictators. The hope is that these will be replaced not by narrow minded theocracies and Talibans, as in Iran or Afganistan, but that the new states will be tolerant and secular. Meanwhile in the UK religious groups still try to hang on to their privileges and intolerances then cry out that they are being discriminated against if anyone tries to challenge them. To these religious leaders 'secularism' is a dirty word, only fit to be applied in foreign lands.
Terry Sanderson will make the case for our tradition of secularism as the foundation of a good society. Human rights, equality under the law, freedom of religion and of expression all need a firm secular base and not domination by or conflicts between religions and sects.
The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. on Friday 8th April at Lecture Theatre 6, The Arts Tower, The University of Sheffield
The University is close to the tram, get off at the Sheffield University stop, and several buses pass nearby including 51, 52, 94 & 95. Street parking is available.
You can see a map of the location with this link: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=S10%202TN
Organised by the Sheffield Humanist Society.
Everyone welcome.
