Does anyone know who the subject of the mosaic at the Police Station in Snig Hill is of?

Every time I see it it reminds me so much of my Grandad.
He was a steelworker in Sheffield and I know it's based on a steelworker so it could be him.
Any ideas how I could find out, artist's name perhaps?

I can't remember all the details but I think it was put up in the 1980's around 1983 time.

You could try running at search for any archives at the Sheffield Star or even Yorkshire TV because I remember them doing a piece on Calendar.

I think you are right when you say it is based on a steelworker but sorry I am a little vague on the details.

It was copied from an image created by the artist who is Paul Waplington.

i beleive this picture actually portays a miner, and the image was created to commemorate the miners strike, the helmet is a miners hat. the face is of one one the main players in the strike tho not scargill. as for the artist i have no idea and will bow to the knowledge of the previous post. I of course stand to be corrected on this but this is what i have been told

I too stand to be corrected, but I'm fairly sure this image pre-dates the miners' strike by a couple of years or so. I always understood it to be a steel worker.

So I was wrong - it didn't pre-date the miners strike. But I was right - it is a steel worker! :)

I'm not sure about the image - I must admit prior to your posting I had thought it was meant to be a miner. However, I can definitely state that it did not predate the miners strike.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my enquiry about the brick mosaic on Snig Hill. Thanks to Damon for the link, I now have the artists name and can continue my enquiries from there.
