View Full Version : Isn't it about time we all stopped buying trimmings?
yosser_huges 28-11-2005, 15:20 To be honest with you all, I really cant see the point of putting up decorations. Surely they amuse the kids, but fully grown adult decorating there homes in this utter tosh, is unacceptable.
Ill start on those stupid little lights that go an your tree. What a waste of £10, on top of that theres the lekky bill. Most people don't stop there, they have 'em all round the room, on the fireplace, round the shelves, accross the walls, on the windows. The list could go on. HOW MANY SETS OF BLOODY LIGHTS DO YOU WANT!!! Im the first to admit i waste electricity, who doesn't? Ill leave a light on occasionally or put the telly on standby for an hour or so.
Festive spirit my arse, just an excuse for the enviromentalists to get their fill of electrical wastage, they have missed out on through the year. Not to mention the firehazards that they potentially could cause.
Then theres the decorations that sprawl from every corner of the room and dangle from the cieling. Stupid singing santas that play the same tune over and over again. snowmen that skate on a £40 icerink, and a couple of angels knocking round for good measure. Just meaningless clutter.
Now we move on to that 'effin tree. WHY! what the hell is the point, most of the time they dont even resemble a tree once these nut cases are throught putting glass ball and tinsill all over the thing. They take up the corner of a room, and ill be damned if you can squeeze throught the gap inbetween that god forsaken tree and the setee, without knocking off atleast 100 of the useless artifacts hung from the bugger.
Sure you pick most of them up afterwards, but theres always one that you manage to stand on assoon as you take your shoes off!!
WHERE ARE HEALTH & SAFETY WHEN YOU NEED THEM??
Sooner or later, these fruits will realise that this decoration malarkey is just a waste of money, and a drain on resources. Money that could be spent at the local, or going into a rainy day fund.
I have presented this argument to other people whilst at work today, a great deal of the responces were along the lines of
"Hey, its christmas, its only once a year. You need to get into the festivity of the season."
How can they say this, when the true meaning of christmas is lost, replaced by commercialisation and the bank manager that rubs his hands every december.
Im not a religious nut, infact im an athiest. But these morons that convince themselves they are celebrating the birth of christ just makes me laugh. Just looking for an excuse to waste money, and line the bank managers pockets.

yosser_huges 28-11-2005, 15:21 DAMN
we need to get a poll on this thing.
any mod up to the challenge?
just a simple yes or no poll.
thanks
I like a few lights here and there. And a tree. Anything else is a bit of a pain and too much blu-tac!
Easy, cut and paste your original post into a new thread and select to create a poll. When you've done that, report your original thread and ask for it to be removed.
I was all ready for calling you a rotten spoilsport, but I agree with you about the over the top lights and the singing santa thing. Damn

:hihi: Bah Humbug - kids have no magic in their lives anymore, don't deny them this bit.

beautynbeast 29-11-2005, 08:00 just gonna say the same thing.
bet the grandkids, or kids cant wait to get to your house christmas day?
do you make them keep there coats on while you turn the heating off.
i thought we had jim royal on for the minute, CHRISTMAS MY AR*E. :hihi:
Gethical 29-11-2005, 09:13 I'm buddhist and see the original point entirely. But I still like to celebrate christmas with some decorations. But buying plastic and spending money on stuff you don't need seems crazy to me. But I have done it in the past because it sparkles in the shop and seems a good idea at the time cus it says 50% off even though it's been marked up 100% above an actual fair price beforehand.
Anyway, I see the point in putting up decorations. It's a celebration of the something that happened years ago but as we evolve the celebration evolves. It's a dark, cold and wet outside and putting up things that brighten the mood for 12 or so days is no bad thing if it makes you feel better. But you can make decorations that don't use natural rescources, that aren't plastic (oil). Do you really need a tree? If so, you can get a non-plastic tree as long as it is still in the pot and not cut down, you look after it while it's in your home you can re-plant it outside or if you haven't got a garden, the place where you got it from might be happy to replant it in their grounds so they can look after and let it regrow. Or if they don't want it, you local authority will recycle it for you and might become chip wood padding for a local play ground or something.
The decorations you buy, make sure they are not made in China as they might of been a sweatshop. Chances are, most will be made in China so make your own - kids will love making their own, loads of websites to tell you how or to get you started. You'll be more creative and be happy that you actually did it. Or if not, resue your decorations from last year.
Instead of sending Christmas cards, send a virtual one so less trees have to be cut down. If you want paper ones, make sure it is on recycled paper and has something on it to say please recycle after Christmas.
In parcels, sticky tape isn't biodegradable, use string or wool to wrap them up - obviously if you are sending in the post then you don't have too much choice, but gift bags or boxes that can be reused is a better idea cus you are reusing.
If you are buying adults a gift, buy them something like adopting an animal, or gifts certificates for the local thetre to help them. Adopt a tree for the woodland trust. If you don't want to do that, think about the gift, where it was made (china again?) or if you buying for someone who has a weight problem or something then don't buy them chocolates, we all eat too much etc but you can limit the amount of food you need. Do you really need that much food? If you do buy chocolate, make sure it is fairtrade.
Loads of stuff you can do, I'm not being a kill-joy here but trying to increase the joy by making Christmas something you think about and are more a part of which will make you enjoy it more. And will be loads cheaper.
Ok, we haven't got time to do everything but we spend time going out buy decorations, why not use that time instead to do some of the stuff? Do alternatives than not at all.
And this post has become waaaaaaay too long than what I wanted it to be so I apologise
Moon Maiden 29-11-2005, 09:19 Shall i get back into the argument for why it isn't Jesus birthday? :suspect:
I put up a tree because it is a heathen symbol of everlasting life being that the tree is normally evergreen and whilst everything around it seemingly dies for winter it doesn't and brings hope for the future in our darkest days.
I don't buy into christmas either...I have my own religious reasons for doing it all, plus I have children and why on earth should I spoil their fun?

Captain, my Captain. I can't wait til January to be honest, what with people pretending to be nice to each other in 'festive spirit' (if it meant that much to them they'd treat others like that all year round), the constant bombardment with toy adverts which I imagine make parents despair - particularly those without much money and then there's a month of our road looking like a poundshop version of the Golden Mile at Blackpool as all the Jones' try and outdo each other with flashing tat.
Bah Humbug.
yosser_huges 29-11-2005, 22:04 I shouldn't be called a "scrooge".
im just thinking things through logically.
If you read my post (people moaning about the kids) you would seee that i have no problem with people trying to make up their homes for the sake of the children. By all means let the kids enjoy this time of year.
i just think its a waste of time, and more importantly money, decorating your home in mindless rubbish
sorry if im a little incoherant, just come back from the boozer

thomsongirl 29-11-2005, 22:20 I'm called a grump, because I really can't be bothered with all the christmas malarky. I can't be bothered to trim up and I can't be bothered to send cards to people. The only bit I like is watching peoples faces when you give them their presents.
Christmas day seems just such a let down after all the hype, which now starts from September! It's only really fun if you have kids.
Don_Kiddick 30-11-2005, 11:27 Good News for Yosser Huges (http://207.44.188.226/Humor/sight/images/SaveMoneyAtXmas.jpg) :o :( :( :(
I will concede that we do sometimes go "over the top" with the lights & decorations (we are guilty of this at our house), but be honest, these long cold dark nights are made much more cheerful by the odd twinkling light are they not? I dont like the tacky singing santas and stuff, but lights & trees & baubles just take the edge off the winter for a while.
I realise that somewhere along the way, we have mostly lost the true reason we celebrate Christmas, but surely, if a bit of tinsel & holly can make people nicer to one another for a short while - we should be glad of that. In an ideal world, we would all be nice all the time, but it's not going to happen is it?
If you wish to be a twinkle - free zone, fair enough, but I'm just off to buy a talking reindeer! lol.
it's not like you need to buy new decorations each year, surely they get packed in a box after christmas and you can just get them out of the loft in a few weeks time.
As for buying gifts, I talk to my family and buy them things that they are going to use and enjoy. I can't see them being very impressed with me buying them an adopt an animal voucher (just an example).
A bit of decoration around the house is just a bit of fun, there's no need to get all scrooge like about it, nor to take it over the top and make your house look stupid.
I don't like nasty bling stuck all over the outside of the house, it just looks incredibly tacky.
No trimmings? you miserable gits. Be it Pagan, Christian, Muslim [Eid], anything which stops people being their normal selfish, uncaring selves even if it is only for one day a year is OK.
Christmas Rules- Santa is THE MAN.
stellstar 01-12-2005, 16:54 Well here goes...IVE PUT UP MY DECORATIONS
Ive got them on the ceiling, the walls, and the fireplace,
out went all my every day ornaments, and in came all the christmas ones. Ive got lights in the windows and all round the room, and I think they're lovely.
And guess who I am? ..... Im the Mum of Ebeneezer {Yosser Huges}
I know where im going to stick the christmas tree on the 6th of January and it isnt in the loft.
Moon Maiden 01-12-2005, 18:30 Not got my trimmings up yet...still not bought them, I'm being very good
However the christmas cake has become a fire risk.

stellstar 01-12-2005, 18:40 Hi Moon Maiden
I am going to cheat this year, and buy a ready iced christmas cake then putting nice decs on top.
Have you got a decent recipe for mincepies, jam tarts, my pastry always goes rock hard.:help:
yosser_huges 26-09-2006, 20:41 Well, its that time of year again. About time i resurfaced an age long thread  All the loopy nutters running round buying stupid trimmings, and lights. All for the sake of making there homes look "festive".
Utter tosh.
Been at work today, and passed a few shops on the moor, who were advertising not only halloween stuff. But christmas mumbo jumbo.
ITS BLOODY SEPTEMBER PEOPLE!!!!!
I say boycott christmas decorations this year guys.
Instead of sending out cards, send out gift tags.
They take up less space, cost less and save space on walls.
Whos with me?
bigcheese 26-09-2006, 21:16 Whos with me?
Not me mate. You are entitled to your opinion, and I do agree with you about it being commercialised and advertised too early, but buying all that useless plastic tack and putting singing santas and lights up everywhere is well worth it when I see the smiles on my 2 boys faces.

You getting at me by any chance :suspect: You used to love it when you were little. Im crossing you off my Christmas list now. :(

Sugar_Kiss 27-09-2006, 12:42 you are a scrooge, and sound so miserable
Dark Moomin 27-09-2006, 12:42 I personally feel that Christmas should be banmned till 1st December, apart from advent things which can be sold from 15th November.
I love Christmas, and particularly the run up. Deciding on what to have for dinner, putting thought into everyone's gifts, decorating the house (but not too early).
There is nothing better than a nicely dressed tree, and some lights, a nice wreath on the door or across the mantlepiece.
But, it is so commercialised now. I like Christmas for a time to really think about friends and family and to make an effort to spend time with them. As a time to be thankful for the things we have, and to think about people who are less fortunate.
It certainly isn't a time for whinging kids to force their parents into spending a fortune on gadgety, overpriced toys, or for people to spend more than they can afford to show they care. A well chosen, or even handmade, gift shows that m,uch much more.
I like the idea of recycled cards, with a message to recycle them again after Christmas!
Now I'm all excited, but by my own rules I can't do anything about it!!
ive just been and bought halloween trimmings today.
Sugar_Kiss 27-09-2006, 12:54 ive just been and bought halloween trimmings today.
yey!! i love an excuse for trimmings.
me too gonna get my creepy music cd out ready to scare the locals again when they come trick or treating.
then its bonfire night.
followed by christmas carol season & festive shopping.
flashbang 27-09-2006, 18:33 Never mind the kids, I just love Christmas and all the pomp that goes with it.
My kids are grown up now, but I still put decorations up everywhere, including loads of lights on the verandah. Mine will be going up on the 1st Saturday in December. Like it or lump it yosser. :hihi:
I use the same decorations each year. I buy one or two new 'special' ones for the tree or replace really old tatty tinsel or knackered lights, but its quite nice and I dunno.....more like Christmas....seeing the same old decorations each year.
Anyway, buying early means I'll have more cash to spend on having a good time at Christmas and I can laugh at all the doom merchants who refuse to spend any cash til December and then find 'emselves maxing out their credit cards and getting skint. Smug g*t that I am. :hihi:
AJ sheffield 27-09-2006, 18:42 Looking at some of the tit heads that decorate their house with vast amounts of stupid tacky outdoor trimmings it seems Christmas is becoming all about beating the neighbours, its the same with fireworks. What next....10 foot diameter Easter eggs.
I dont care much for Christmas anymore, its got way too commercialised.
flashbang 27-09-2006, 18:58 Looking at some of the tit heads that decorate their house with vast amounts of stupid tacky outdoor trimmings it seems Christmas is becoming all about beating the neighbours, , .
Excuse me, I decorate because its something that I enjoy, I couldn't care less what the neighbours do and don't do. I have my own tastes and if anyone doesn't like what I do then Tough.

Dont get Touchy, I was only expressing my opinion on the subject. Anyway theres surely a cut off point at which some people stop enjoying themselves and simply want to obliterate the Jones's.
Some of these houses are so ridiculously over dressed with lights and massive inflatables that even the council are nailing them.

Im sorry for jumping, I love Christmas as stated in one of my posts, and I like to put decorations up on the inside and outside of my home.
We only have a small verandah so I am limited to what I can put up, thats why when you said about beating the neighbours with trimmings and stuff, I got a bit annoyed, and thought chance would be a fine thing. Now if I had a big house......Things might be different. :hihi:
this_bloke 27-09-2006, 20:03 christmas is b0110x except for gunna pub and getting spliced. expensive and needless. our lass buys for every tom dick and harry. no wonder im always skint. bahhh humbug innit.

babychickens 27-09-2006, 20:20 well, i'm a tight beggar and buy christmas paper and cards just after christmas, ready for next year. they are charity cards, but so little goes to charity anyway that it's kind of pointless - i buy them cheap and give to charity without using whsmiths as an intermediary.
oh, and cards i receive? that'll be next years gift tags, thank you very much. tight? me? yessah!

It must be age thats got me fed up with Christmas, now its me spending all the money instead of having it spent on me. Plus I am bone idle when I aint at work so I just cannot be bothered with all the fuss.
I would love to see the electricity bill from some of these houses though, they must be huge.
Don_Kiddick 28-09-2006, 06:07 Can you not make your children smile any other way?
You should see their little faces when they are returned to the Orphanage for unwanted ginger children on Boxing Day :hihi:
