View Full Version : "Proposing".......Any nice ideas Ladies?? (or Gents)
With the blessing of her parents, I'm going to be asking my partner to be my wife. (I think she might say yes too!!)
I have in mind a really nice hotel that I've been thinking about booking for a weekend away, where I intend to pop the question over a romantic dinner.
But was wondering, as this will be the first and last time I ask, if I might be missing a chance to do something really special and wonderful??
In my mind I see myself getting down on one knee during dinner......having some Champagne sent over flowers etc..... but it started me thinking if any of you guys have had any experiences or heard of anything which made you go........."Oh wow thats so nice"
I know the most important thing is the commitment to spending the rest of your life with some one.......but I just want her to have a truely wonderful evening that she will remember for ever, and really enjoy telling people about.
So with that.......any ideas, suggestions and advice would be warmly recieved.
Thank you for reading this.:)
Ginger_Kitty 28-11-2005, 10:04 My best mate and her new hubby had a great engagement place, it was somewhere out in the middle of no-where, but near to where they holiday, so its a special place to them that they can go back to (they went back on honeymoon...awww...) whenever they want to...
I'm hoping my OH has the same ideas... somewhere special to us.... on an edge in the peak with a fantastic view... maybe a nice bit of romantic woodland....
A hotel is a lovely idea (esp in this weather) but it costs if you ever want to go back there... :(
anyway, best of luck and i hope she says yes!!!!
evildrneil 28-11-2005, 10:09 Is she expecting it? If not take her out for a cosy pre-christmas dinner and have the ring inserted into a christmas cracker along with a 'will you marry me' motto :)
JonJParr 28-11-2005, 10:11 Though never having 'popped the question' myself I can imagine a proposal is a very personal moment. As such I'd advise steering clear of the usual restaurant scenarios. I'd opt for a much more intimate affair perhaps in the privacy of your hotel room or over a glass of champagne and fine chocolates. You can design your own atmosphere; flowers, slinky lighting, romantic music.
TIP: Don't let the hotel provide the champagne - they'll overcharge you for an average bottle. Instead, choose one yourself (happy to make a recommendation) and ask them to send up an ice bucket with two chilled flutes. Plunge the bottle into the bucket for at least twenty minutes and then gently, whilst cradling it in a white napkin, slip the cork from the neck of the bottle producing only the quietest of sighs. This is the best way to enjoy Champagne.
Thanks Em......hope she say's yes too!!
Yeah she is expecting me to Evil......we are having a ring designed so I can't surprise her with that, but thank you for the suggestion mate.
Ginger_Kitty 28-11-2005, 10:18 you can still surprise her with how you present it to her... if she's expecting a down-on-one-knee moment... surprise her ;)
Thanks for that John.........to be honest I like the privacy of our hotel room. There was something in the back of my mind about doing it infront of a restaurant full of people that I wasn't really comfortable with.
Especially if she says "No"!! I'd feel like a right tw*t!!
Thanks again for you thoughts........like them alot!:)
redrobbo 28-11-2005, 10:21 A friend of mine proposed to his girl-friend at the top of the Eiffel Tower! Strangers applauded them. The trip to Paris, ring, etc., had all been meticulously planned, and the girl-friend hadn't an inkling over what was to happen. Very romantic setting - and the engagement remains a memorable occasion.

Glad to be of help. Can I suggest a bottle of Bollinger Special Cuvee - it's got great buttery aromas and a creamy mousse but with an intense zippy tang of citrus. The bubbles are smaller than say Moet or Veuve which indicates that they allow longer for the mysteries of time to be wrought in their cool chalky cellars.
Wow Jon......you seem to know your Fizz, thanks again!!
If she say's "Yes" i might pick your brains on wine & fizz for the wedding!!??
Cheers again mate:thumbsup:
if you are having the ring made i would take that as a pretty strong hint that she will say yes :D
I'm sure she will Scott..........but there is a little place in my head that keeps reminding me that she might not!! Argh!! It won't go away!! lol

Thank you for your kind words Coffee. Fine wine is somewhat of a passion that I like to indulge. By all means do contact me re: wine for other occasions - I will do what I can.
Jon
GoGo_dancer 28-11-2005, 10:39 Well I wish you both the very best, but if you think this is stressfull, wait till she starts filling your house with wedding magazines and brochures!
definately not in front of a room full of people. i guess everyone is different but for me it should be a moment just for the two of you to share.
to be honest - if you are alone and your having a happy time then it doesn't really matter where you are !!
(i do like the idea of somewhere you can go back to though :) )
Don_Kiddick 28-11-2005, 11:13 My mate got married HERE (http://www.fortercastle.com/) - it has it's own chappel.
They do holidays too.
That looks stunning mate......thank you.
I'll look into this.......what a wonderful place.
Much appreciated
Don_Kiddick 28-11-2005, 11:29 A pleasure - I can't recommend it enough.
It's so remote & qiuet & peacefull.
More info HERE (http://www.scottishcastles-info.co.uk/forter/)
I want that handbag thats on the table !
Top bloke Don........thanks again dude
If the handbag is there Poppins.........I'll nick it for you!! lol
When my OH popped the question last year he did it as a treasure hunt. There was an old box wrapped up with all my other christmas pressies and when I opened it there was a clue and I had to solve all these puzzles and riddles until I eventually found the box with the ring in it :D
I was most impressed by the amount of thought that went into to it and also the fact that he managed to plant all these clues while I was in the house and I never suspected a thing!
Good luck, however you decided to propose

The place is stuffed full of antiques & paintings, first edition books in a vast library, the towels are thicker than our staircarpet, and it's very warm.
The curtesy toiletries are Molton Brown (http://www.woodruffs.co.uk/asp/probrands.asp?brand=Molton%20Brown).
Posh.
It's really remote and the only sounds you here outside are distant sheep bleets, eagles (or something big) high in the mountains & the trickle of the sream at the bottom of the 'baillie'
That sounds lovely Maddy.....as you say the amount of effort he put in planning it and getting the clues into the house say so much.
Hoping you are both very happy and healthy always.
Thank you for your post x
koenigsinger 28-11-2005, 11:48 coffee....

Cheers Sharp.........
Hey Spook........ that sounds very special mate. What a wonderful way to do it. Seriously glad she said yes too!!
We went to NY at the start of the year....but I would dearly love to go back and propose in Manhatten......one of my very favorite places.

Old_Bloke 28-11-2005, 12:15 When I was with my last girlfriend she once told me that there was a hillside somewhere in the Peaks that she used to go to when she needed time on her own to think. Apparently it's got a great view across Sheffield so would have been a wonderful place to propose. Moonlit picnic and champagne in a place that really meant something to her.
I guess what I'm saying is that being thoughtful about where and how you do it is the most important part. You know her better than anyone.

valentine 29-11-2005, 13:05 When 1st hubby proposed to me, it was New Years Eve and we were booked into a posh hotel for the night.
He took me back to the room and handed me a huge box, when I opened it a helium balloon floated out with the ring attached to the ribbon.
That sounds great Valentine..............I trust you said "Yes" by the way??:)

Yes, all is now fine thank you.
When 2nd hubby proposed we were on holiday in wales, he took me down to the beach at dusk where he had already lit a camp fire and got down on 1 knee. (And yes Coffee, I accepted)
That's really great to hear Valentine.
Glad you have found happiness again.......I'm divorced too. Was married for 12 years, two little girls, so I understand that it is very hard unwrapping a marriage.
:(
But I've never been happier now:clap:
Just so you know, for clarity of this thread I didn't propose first time......I got asked.
......hence it will be the first & last time I ever ask anyone.
