Hallo
I'm going to relocate to Yorkshire in some two months. I wonder if it is better to live in Sheffield or in e.g. Leeds. No doubt in that pool only one winner (in this forum) exists. And no doubt - it is Sheffield:)
But why? /except for the main reason - it is the Sheffield forum/
/given:
- I like music especially live music (a broad scope: new sounds, jazzy ones along with these old-school punkrock bands)
- nightlife plays a significant role (;))
- no access to wildlife makes me really crazy
- urban noise (except for pubs noise) makes me even more crazy
- I'd like to study once again/
So?

Easy commuting to Barnsley is a must but I can imagine that is a piece of cake no matter where one lives

Well if you want wildlife Sheffield is right by the Peak District, I have just chosen Sheffield over Leeds, can;t really expliain why saw both and had a gut feeling :o)

Lets say: wildlife is not the most important point, these town-dwelling entertainment issues have substantially bigger impact;)

simply I wouldn't like to spend some yrs in a place like Ruhrgebiet or any other highly industrial area

Hello there,

I am currently living in Leeds whilst on a placement year after living in Sheffield for two years. I love both cities, but if I'm honest I can't wait to get back to Sheffield next year.

Leeds seems to be a bit more trendy with all its posh bars and stuff in the city centre. Fantastic eating out and for shopping too, you won't be short of anything to day or night. I would say that there are more big name djs and stuff like that here and there's quite a good underground scene too. Basically whatever you're into Leeds will have it.

Saying that though there's a lot to be said for Sheffield's night life too. There's some really good nights to be found if you manage to steer clear of the over promoted cheesy student nights at places like kingdom! It's also a short drive/cycle from the peak district and there's a lot more open space in the city centre. Leeds can be a bit noisy with the airport only a few miles from the city centre and also the house prices are considerably higher.

Hope this helps.

Sheffield, witout a doubt. Leeds is the most souless city in Britian. Yes, it's very fashionable but has absolutley no music scene or pubs. Just lots of trendy bars. The fact that Leeds prides it's self as 'The london of the north' says a lot. Most people would see that as a bad point. I do. Eveyone is also noticably less friendly and aggresive. For instance, when driving in Leeds it's rare to be let out ot or for someone thank you. There.

Sheffield, no contest.....

Wildlife is just round the corner and up the road in nearby Derbyshire as well as locally, there's plenty of pubs in the city centre and beyond, good pubs as well as the traditional local boozers this country is prided on.... Plenty of club-life to be had here in Sheff also, not that I personally "do" the clubs, too noisy, smoky and expensive for me.

Granted the bus service is not as reliable as it could be here in Sheffield but we do have a regular 7 days a week Supertram service which more than makes up for that..... And no, I don't just mean services in the Stannington area when I say about bus services being unreliable.

on paper Leeds has seemingly everything to offer...it does seem to be more cosmopolitan and the city centre has that bustling atmosphere

but

everyone loves sheffield..... they come here and love it (myself included although I can't explain why)
