View Full Version : Why can't supermarkets provide customer service?
Dizzyblonde 27-11-2005, 12:00 Why are supermarkets so lazy. The assistant in Tescos today forgot to give me my cash back (the cash point was broken). I complained to customer services and its going to take two days to cash up the till.
When they make so much money a minute you would think they could bit keener to rectify their mistake. Oh well fortunately Sainsburys is just around the corner.

SatanInHeels 27-11-2005, 12:31 I work at sainsburys and especially as i only work on the tills when it is busy so do get a little confused sometimes, it is so easy to forget to give cashback.. however i can only speak for myself here, but if i forget to give someone cash back and they tell me quite soon after, i would remeber that i forgot and am then able to rectify the mistake.. we now have to sign the reciept after giving the cashback which makes it much more difficult to forget.. perhaps someone should suggest that other places do something like that too! X
as a customer services dogsbody (ie the first person people have a go at) it happens so often BUT surely you would know straight away you hadn't received cashback. In my store the customer has to initial the slip. I can do an immediate spot check on the till and every one is happy. If they come back later it has to wait till I have done the cash in the morning.
PS The customer is not always right.:)
My branch of Sainsbury's do the signing for cash back also but I wish that they would check my signature with the one on my card as well, even though I have put a pin number in.
I have once had to go back because of not actually receiving it but as they remembered me,
I got it straightaway, no problem.
My latest panic was walking out without my debit card...did'nt discover it missing till next morning.arghhh. panic is an understatement. THOUGHT it was Sainsbury's, went over, asked customer service, showed further id. got it back no problem phew.....I have a lot of respect for the cashiers and I am always shown respect back.:)

There is no need to check a signature if you use chip and pin.

I KNOW there isn't but I just WISH that they would on the cash back sheet. Just something in my own mind really. It's not a complaint just a thought.
Every time I go to Tesco (like today) it reminds me why I shop at Sainsbury's on a weekly basis!
Applegrim 27-11-2005, 19:23 I have had to change my routine of going to Sainsbury's, and I wondered how I would cope not having a car anymore,so I tried Iceland and it's great, I get to choose the food I want, they still have bargains and boggoff's, they pack all your bags for you, then they deliver it free, also when Dave comes knocking at your door with your groceries, he then brings it right into my kitchen,I'm training him now to put it in the cupboards, then things will be perfect.
Stalborg 27-11-2005, 20:29 I used to work as checkout supervisor and also in the cash office for Somerfield. Two days to cash up a till is ridiculous - it is a ten minute job and granted it's a Sunday so there may be no one in the cash office but things like this would be done first thing on a Monday morning. I would give them until about 9:30 tomorrow morning and then go back in and ask them for your cash. If they still say it's going to take two days then demand to see the manager - that normally makes things move a bit quicker.
I don't think that its Supermarkets so much as everywhere. I used to work in a shop in my younger days and I always smiled and was polite and helpful and nowadays noone seems to give a **** about Customer Service or Customer Satisfaction.
It drives me mad and everyone who is ignorant is made aware of the fact I don't like it at the time!!!
GRRrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRR!!!!!!!!!

its a sad thing but because we want to shop all under one roof, 24 hours a day 7 days a week then you do lose that personal touch. I go to my local butcher - he calls me by my name, he asks after my kids and we have a laugh and a joke. When i go to any of the local supermarkets unless i know somebody personally who works there i am just another customer to them - no matter how polite and professional the staff are.
When i go to the butcher pat is always there. Elsewhere it depends who is on shift.
Just a last note about Tesco. I often wonder if some of the staff - especially the managers go on special courses to get in your way while you're trying to manouvere that damn trolley. or is it arrogance at being no.1
You shouldn't need to know someone by name to be polite.
I think a lot has to do with upbringing! My parents taught me to be polite, hardworking and helpful. Pity everyone doesn't think this way though!!!!
Its annoying that I go out of my way just to do things like holding a door open or helping someone carry bags to a car etc... noone even says thank you when you hold a door open anymore... arrrggghhh!
Now I'm on one!!!

Oh, come on. "Iniitial this cashback please".
It's harldy a safegaurd against fraud.
I've used a found student union card for about 3 months...it's not even my face..Ive had discount everywhere I've used it. A signature means nothing.

...:o I ALWAYS smile and be polite to customers at work even though it isnt always easy as i am very shy and am often fed up n unhappy at work! also try my best to be as helpful as possible too.. wich isnt always easy as i havent worked in the store i work in now for long and 6 hours a week doesnt really help ya learn where things are! it may not be the best job in the world, but i always try to smile n stuff as if you appear happy n try and care about the job, then people tend to treat ya a lot better n the day goes so much faster!
See, I think it's a mix up of what people do and what people expect.
I want to be served and that's it. I dont want any plastic smile and fake enquiry as to how my day is and for it then to be declared that they hope it turns out well.
I wish to buy what I want, change money and leave with my goods. Throw a fake smile at me and ask if I want fries with it and I'll feel a tad pittled off and the person saying it will feel uncomfortable.
People behind tills aren't paid enough to do a fake smile every couple of minutes towards people they hold no affection for whatsoever. It's false and not called for.
darren34 27-11-2005, 22:49 The only thing I want to do when in a supermarket is get what I want and get out. The only customer sevice I want is "That'll be.....please".
sainsburys and asda are my favourite stores not only for quality, but for customer service.
Morrisons, well morrisons has the worste of everything.

Myself I shop at Asda Handsworth and if I have any problems I either speak to the customer help desk people or those I know around the store (yes I have shopped there that long) or even the person to greet you on the way in (part ish of the help desk)
Always friendly and helpfull and happy for a little talk and banter.
The few times I have had to complain it's always been helpful and constructive.
Then again I think I've been warned by staff
"if you see this loony skipping and similar along the isles at 3AM or so - just ignore him - he's harmless" And yes I have done this - generaly because I've been paid or overdosed on pro-plus. Or both - I forget. :)

If you think its bad shopping there, you ought to see what the staff think of the place (and you!)

Dizzyblonde 30-11-2005, 19:33 Just thought I would update on my cash back saga.
1. I did complain straight away but was told that I would have to wait until the cash office opened.
2. I got a message on my phone at work on Monday to say call in to the store at any time the cash would be waiting.
3. I duly arrived, no record of a call, no one knew the name left on my message, no record of anything in the cash office.
4. After 20 minutes of hanging around, whilst they tannoyed all and sundry, they eventually gave me my cash back.
It looks like they need some decent admin systems because the impression I got is they don't know what they are doing. Surely I cant be the only customer they have done this too?
Nevertheless, I gave the £2 off my next purchase which I was kindly given on Sunday to a work colleague - hello Sainsbury's I'll be shopping where I get service and a smile.
