Scottish playwright, Mike Cullen’s ‘short, sharp, shocking play about child abuse and false memory syndrome’ left one reviewer (London Evening Standard) feeling ‘uneasy’. ‘Anna Weiss’ is a fast moving, triangular struggle for the truth about allegations of childhood sexual abuse recovered under hypnosis, by therapist Anna (Sarah Oldknow) from daughter Lynne (Gemma O’Mara). Accused is Lynne’s father, David (Robert Beard). The language is graphic, chilling and disturbing.
Mike Cullen’s stage works include the hugely successful play The Cut. He is well known for his TV work including the hit crime series Donovan, Bloodlines, Eleventh Hour, Afterlife as well as being a writer on Taggart and Primeval. Anna Weiss was performed in Edinburgh and London in the late 1990’s
False Memory Syndrome is a highly controversial approach to problems experienced in adulthood (appealing to women in particular). Conclusions may be based on symptoms rather any real evidence of abuse.
“In other words, they identify themselves as victims of sexual abuse not because they uncover a buried memory from childhood but because they believe their adult lives show evidence of such abuse” Jo Widdiwiss (Guardian). The full complexities of this are mirrored in the play.
