It depends how sophisticated you want it to be, but Audacity is free and will do the job.

Sound recorder is built in to windows, start program, accessories, media i think... This will copy from your mic in to a .wav file (any music program will convert this to MP3), or try www.download.com for free application, or use bittorrent and down load an application such as ACID 6, Fruity loops, or qbase SX which will give you full sequencing capabilities - Oh it's illegal so don't do it kids :nono: :headbang:

audacity will work perfectly well for your needs, its a good programme and free.

soundforge is even better, but you have to pay for that
