View Full Version : How about a board gaming club in Sheffield?
mr_clumpit 25-11-2005, 21:16 Now then. I know board games are sometimes seen as a bit - ahem - nerdy. But luckily, I tend not to give much of a toss what other people think. And I've been thinking, perhaps it would be a nice idea to start a board gaming club in Sheffield. Certainly more social than playing on the PC, Xbox or whatever.
Is anyone else interested? If so, I'll start scouting for a venue.
Sounds like a laugh, let me know how you get on!
no one else has suggested it.
you might have a monopoly...:heyhey:
Spanna2005 29-11-2005, 15:04 Nothing wrong with board games and why would it be considered nerdy?
I've got Simpson's Cluedo and Monopoly. My bf likes playing Risk.
Oh and if anyone is interested in Mahjonng PM me!
Mahjong...
Now you've taken it up a gear from monopoly and cluedo!
Wish I'd got time and a battery in my calculator!
i think this sound quite good actually.
i have a great board game called hedgehogs revenge!

eh, you've confused me now.
mr clumpit - The Red Deer on Pitt Street has a function room for hire for only £10 an evening and they will do a buffet for £3.50 a head. The only problem is deciding on a night that people will go.

A friend of mine had a game called Family Business which involve taking out mobsters. It was great fun. In fact, I will see if its still available to buy....

I take it you were talking about the 4 player game: north, south, east, and west winds?
Nicknamed I think "chattering sparrows" 'cos the chinese play it that fast the tiles click.
Complicated system of points off people and giving them to the winner etc.
1 drink in I'd need the calculator!

not sure about posting images, thats the first time ive ever tried!
hedgehogs revenge is all about the hedgehogs getting there own back!
mr_clumpit 29-11-2005, 20:32 Thanks Spanna. I had thought of the Red Deer, seems like a decent bet, although not accessible for disabled people. But then hardly anywhere affordable in Sheffield is.
My thinking was that people could bring their own games along, and then decide what they wanted to play out of what was available. I'm quite keen on Cat Attack. You get to behave as disgracefully as my own moggie - and there's a lot of scrapping!
If anyone else is interested, please post. Once it seems like we've got enough people interested, I'll look at an inaugural date.

*vanessa* 29-11-2005, 20:46 I'd be interested - i have various board games - including super cludeo and 1 called Titanic - which is in french.

I've taught 11 year olds in a junior school how to play mah jong. It really isn't that hard to learn the basics. There is a scoring card to calculate the points.
Mah jong originates from the sound of shuffling tiles at the beginning of the game, which allegedly sounds like the 'twittering of sparrows', which, I understand, is the literal translation of mah jong.
Nick_Kennedy 29-11-2005, 22:07 Sounds good to me. I'll be in Shefield from the start of February, I'll bring along a Mah-Jong set and Risk 2210AD. If we're playing cards too Bridge might be a good one.
Nick
*vanessa* 29-11-2005, 22:08 I'd love to learn how to play mah jong! The tiles are SO pretty:P

Sounds like fun. I've never played risk with a few beers though. I'd love to learn Ma Jong. I watch the chinese play it at the casin and they get so animated. Post a date wen you've decided.

Maybe I was conned, I played with 3 others who 'knew' the scoring system. 50% of the gametime was them working out/arguing over scores. Therefore never went too far into the scoring system myself.
Do you find you get arguments happening because some people go for a quick win and others hold out because they want a massively scoring win?
Spanna2005 30-11-2005, 09:07 garryn, not arguments as such, more like people being smug that they've won and eveyone else just being annoyed.
When I've taught people to play in the past, we always play the first few games open hand so that people can learn the principles. Common mistakes are drinking alcohol while playing and confusing the tiles
Getting quite excited about this now, but I can't commit to anything until the new year as I'm pretty busy til then
I'd be up for an evening of board games. I've recently started playing 'go' online, and I'd love to find some people to play with in Sheffield. I've also got a Mahjong set but I've not played it much at all. Monopoly, scrabble, etc are always fun as well.
The Red Deer function room that Spanna2005 suggested is a good central location. Please let me know if you decide on a date - I can make most evenings except Wednesdays.
mr_clumpit 06-12-2005, 20:47 Hello all,
Nice to see some responses. I am due at the Red Deer next week, so will ask about availability. It's not a bad room, I go to a book group there.
Probably looking at late Jan/early Feb. for the first one. Will post again nearer the time.

Very few Go players in Sheffield according to the British Go Association, but I used to play at a reasonable level and wouldn't mind starting again. There is a 7 Dan rated player on Park Hill somewhere but I can't remember his number and stuff ......
Function room at the Fat Cat is free but upstairs .......

Good point! The Fat Cat is an excellent pub. I'm only just starting Go, rated at about 25 Kyu, but I'd love to play some face-to-face games with anyone who's interested.

Spanna2005 and myself have exchanged PMs, and we will announce a start date after Christmas, i.e., Jan or Feb.
We both have a mah jong set, and like Spanna2005, I also teach freehand. This simply means that you learn the names of the tiles and their values, and how to get started. Only AFTER a round has concluded, do we then teach the scoring system! After a few rounds, you then start to get the hang of what tiles to save, and what tiles to discard.
However, as Plain Talker, Andy & BoroughGal can testify, I somehow seem to manage only low scores - whereas these three newbies to the game just floored me with high scoring rounds! Or, as we say in Mah Jong.....pung or quong (but not chow!) :hihi:
Anyone else who wishes to be added to the list, please PM me. Then Spanna2005 or I will PM everyone on the list sometime in the New Year with a start date. Have we settled on a venue? We've previously played at the DevCat - but some of these other venues look interesting.
I've a Diplomacy set too Phan - but haven't played for years. Anyone else interested in playing Diplomacy?
I'd love to learn how to play Go by the way.
mr_clumpit 14-12-2005, 15:53 Ooh eck, now I'm confused. Do people still want to meet to play all sorts of board games, or just Mah Jong?
Serafina 30-12-2005, 01:26 Hello all!
We are big board game fans and found this thread very interesting. Actually we run the Red Deer and would very much like to host a board game club in our upstairs room.
The room has 4 big tables which seat around 6 people, and a bunch of little tables which would be ideal for 2 player games. Unfortunately it is pretty well booked up for next year, so it is difficult to get a regular day, but we were thinking Monday 23/1/06 for a start date, and we could take it from there, maybe picking a Monday or Tuesday evening each following month.
In terms of games, we enjoy the strategic type of continental titles rather than those where you just roll a dice and move your counter, but if you want to sit in the corner and play Ludo thats okay.
So, some games we could bring (which is easy, since we live over the pub) are:
Carcassonne - You play tiles to create a country and score points by taking control of areas of it. This one is dead easy to learn.
Tigris & Euphrates - Try to colonise Egypt (don't know why it's Egypt, it doesn't really matter) by building farms and temples. It takes some getting your head round.
Settlers of Catan - Build towns and cities by managing production of stone, food, wood, etc. (Easy to learn and play)
Scarab Lords - A 2 player card game where you have to duff up your opponent using gods and armies. (Set in Egypt again)
Kings Gate - You have to take over parts of a city to get power.
Power Grid - Haven't played this yet. The rules make me fall asleep but it actually looks really good. You have to supply electricity to cities in Europe. No! Don't go! It looks good, honest!
Through the Desert - Build camel trains through the desert. Best train wins. (This is surprisingly intense, and the camels all look like sweets)
Wildlife Adventure - Set up expeditions to discover wildlife. If we can find some English rules it should make more sense.
Escape from Colditz - I don't want to be the Germans every time.
Lord of the Rings - A great game where all the players work together to beat the game mechanics and defeat Sauron.
Zombies!!! - You have to like zombies and games that never seem to end.
Zombies!!! 2 thru 4 - I do like zombies!
All Wound Up - Wind up zombies race round a graveyard. Yes, I know it sounds stupid. It is.
Attack! - We have never played this as I hurt my fingers cutting all the bits out. Looks like Risk but better.
We also have a load of old games like Thunder Road, Key to the Kingdom, Escape from Atlantis, and Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs for nostalgia value.
So, if I haven't geeked you out, post here if you are interested in meeting at the Red Deer, about 7.30pm, on Monday 23 January.
Cheers!
redrobbo 30-12-2005, 02:11 I think we are looking to start a regular weekly or fortnightly games board meet, starting with mah jong sessions mr_clumpit. Then build on that with other games. An announcement of the start date & venue will be made soon, once Spanna2005 and I have got our diaries together in the New Year!
Serafina is offering a monthly board games meet, starting on Monday 23 Jan, with a wide range of games. Some of these sound very interesting (except for Escape from Colditz! :help: No wonder Serafina doesn't want to play the part of the Germans - no-one ever speaks to you!!!).
This all looks great, I'm quite excited by both Serafina's idea and the mah jong as well.
mr clumpit is going to be away most of the year now, (Thailand, not prison - and hopefully not a Thai prison;) ), so it's good that other people have picked this up. Serafina - I don't mind playing the Germans. I also have both Lord of the Rings expansions, plus Dune which I really like. Will see you on the 23rd.

That's 15 at the moment. Spanna2005 and myself each have a mah jong set, which will cater for 8 players. Anyone else got a set they can bring?
If you've never played mah jong before - don't worry. We'll make it dead easy for beginners - which means we'll first teach you the moves, and only at the end of a game will we teach you the scoring system!
As Spanna2005 says - ooh exciting!
Pung! Qoung! Chow! Mah Jong!!!!

Bummer, I do a woodwork course on Tuesdays, but let me know of further dates. Cheers.
Serafina 05-01-2006, 23:19 Redrobbo,
Unfortunately our room at the Red Deer is already booked next Tuesday. If it helps, here are the January dates free as I write:
Sat 14, Fri 20, Sat 21, Tue 24, Fri 27, Sat 28. I know that's a bit of a rubbish selection, but the room gets booked up quite quickly, even at this time of year. If you want to pop in any time and look through the diary with us for some dates feel free. We are nearly always here...
In the meantime, we hope to see you on the 23rd.
If you play RISK, I'm not playing with you, so there. I'm too trusting!
But If you play Monopoly, I'm in. Unbeaten to the day (I'm a hustler and hide my money under a rug)
Serafina 05-01-2006, 23:54 Bonny,
You are too trusting for Risk, but not Monopoly? I can't think of a game where it's easier to stitch people up than Monopoly!
Hopefully though, there will be enough people, and enough different games that everybody can play what they like, and maybe try something new. It would be horrible if we were all forced to play Escape from Colditz all night!
garydickson 07-01-2006, 18:07 If you play RISK, I'm not playing with you, so there. I'm too trusting!
Or is that just a cunning bluff so if you do play then people won't see you as a threat, and ignore you while secretly you plot to take over the world???
Anyway, I'd certainly be up for a game of Risk, haven't played for a while, but I've got the board if needed. I've got Ker-Plunk too, does that count?

All is not lost though - I've reserved 3 tables at -
THE DEVONSHIRE CAT, Tuesday 10 Jan, for 7.30pm.

Hi there!
Thought I'ld step out of lurker status to say that I hope to join the mah jongers tonight at the Devonshire Cat. May be a bit late and hungry as I'll have hot footed it from yoga... but reckon I can get a sandwich and master mah jong at the same time.
Serafina, can't make the 23rd but would love to come to your next games night... we also have Carcassone... a top game indeed... and others like Ticket to Ride (building railways across Europe) and Bonhanza (bean planting  ). Weird topics, but good fun. Now I've outed myself as a game geek :suspect: .... but am a complete mah jong novice!

Thanks. Hope tonight is fun for all.

redrobbo 10-01-2006, 17:19 Hiya goldenturkey  Welcome to the forum!

goldenturkey 10-01-2006, 18:40 :o Cor, quick responses. Very nice to see people are keen!
If people will feedback on Tonight and maybe any plans for future nights...knock out Mah Jong (calculator included).
I produced a rule sheet and scoring table when I tried to get friends to play last year. Any one want a copy let me know (Excel) to help understand and keep track of things, during what can at times be a daunting start
CHRIS
PS I've also found that there are 'many' variations in the rules of Mah Jong (also quite a few spellings), so is anyone willing to be the referee (you get to keep the calculator)?
PPS Alot of mention of board games (of which I shall dig around in my attic to find) but I also have several quite cute card based games like Fluxx (where the rules always change...yep!), Chez Geek, Chrononauts (travel through time altering everything so you can get home to your particular version of the future) and a few more.
Hope tonight was fun.

The forum mah jong night was a HUGE success, and most enjoyable. There were eight players...
Doublewood, Edd, eralc, Plain Talker, ptigga, redrobbo, spanna2005 & Tracie.
After an intial introduction round, we played two tables. Spanna2005 has the scores for her table, but the scores for our table were -
Plain Talker 232 points - the winner
ptigga 68 points
Doublewood 48 points
redrobbo 36 points
Spanna2005 can't make next Tuesday night. We will announce a new date in due course, hopefully on an alternative night next week when we can both bring our mah jong sets.
I shall post details on this thread, and PM everyone on my list.
If anyone else wants to join the forum mah jong meets, please PM me - and I'll add your name to the list.

Spanna2005 11-01-2006, 09:42 The game really sped up once everyone got the hang of the rules. The scoring at the end was quite interesting as I'd never seen the points system before, but now it makes more sense!
Scores from our table were as follows (off the top of my head as I've left the score sheet in my box of tiles):
eralc won with 184 points
Spanna2005 with 114 points
Edd with 28 points
Tracie with 26 points
We only managed to get three games in. I've no idea how long it would take to play all 16 games in a set :o
goldenturkey - will pm you my email address for scoresheet
Really enjoyed it! Thanks redrobbo and spanna2005 for being great coaches, certainly by the end of the evening it was good to feel that you'ld got your head round most of the basic... though I'm sure it takes a lot longer to play really strategically.
nice to meet you all too,
clare
redrobbo 11-01-2006, 14:00 The next forum mah jong meet will be held at the Devonshire Cat on Monday 16 January, 7.30 - 9.30pm.
Spanna2005 & redrobbo will be available to give tuition for any novices to the game.
Does anyone have an extra set of mah jong tiles that they can bring with them?
Pung, Qoung, Chow!
Red
A reminder of some aspects of the game learned this week -
3 suits = Bamboo, Circles & Characters.
3 Dragons = Red, Green & White
4 Winds = North, East, South & West.
Pung = a scoring set of three identical tiles
Qoung = a scoring set of four identical tiles
Chow = a non-scoring set of three consecutive tiles from the same suit
The Sparrow's Head = a set of 2 matching tiles required by the winner to complete mah jong
Minor tiles = Nos 2-8 in each suit
Major, Honour & Cardinal tiles = Nos 1 & 9 of each suit + Winds & Dragons.
In future mah jong sessions, we will introduce the additional single tiles .......
Season tiles = Spring, Summer Autumn, Winter
Flower tiles = Plum, Lily, Bamboo, Chrysanthemum
And when you've got the hang of the scoring system, we will teach the 10 Special Scoring Hands, i.e.,
The Thirteen Unique Wonders Hand
The Calling Nine Hand
The Four Happinessses
The Four Blessings
The Three Great Scholars
Hand from Heaven
Heavenly Joy
Hidden Treasure
Earth's Grace
All Major Hand
Hope to see as many as possible next Monday!
goldenturkey 11-01-2006, 14:09 Oops! Looks like I missed a good night!
I will get my ass in gear and see you next week.
Someone has requested the scoresheet so I'll email from home (swinging the lead at work at the mo!) and hope to get some feedback if people are using other variants or calculations.
The sheet I produced summates about 5 or 6 information sources regarding the european game, though classical chinese, japanese, malaysian and american scoring version are a mystery.
I have an antique set and a large wood block set bought in Thailand for which I had to paint the 8 flower tiles.
I am more than willing to bring either or all along.
I've also found a tiny shareware PC desktop Mah Jong program for anyone who wants to practise before next tuesday.
I'm open to PM from all about any of the above.

hiya,
next week is a bit crowded for me, so I'll have to duck out of this one. I'm trying to avoid too much crowding of the diary, so would generally tend towards playing once a month-ish (maybe moving around different weekday evenings?) rather than trying to make it a weekly thing. Of course, that's not to stop any of you mahjong ultra-keenies playing weekly.... just thought I would put my cards (tiles!) on the table :)

Well up for a game of Backgammon, I used to be quite good at this - once I remember how to set it up!
Spanna2005 12-01-2006, 12:08 eralc - that is a good point you raise!
Once jitsu starts up again I will be busy every single night of the week so I expect that I'm going to have to strictly limit my attendance of mah jonng nights in the future.
goldenturkey 12-01-2006, 12:50 Sounds like a regular night/same day will be difficult.
I suppose as long as we can get one person who knows at least the basic rules and three others, a meet could go ahead.
I agree with Clare about being already committed on other nights, but it does sound like it would be a greatly appreciated 'occasional' fun night out!

Re: the mah jong. It seems that some people (myself included) can't always make a regular night. But would it be ok to turn up anyway, and if there are other beginners there they could start getting to grips with it, and if not, just sit in on a game and watch and learn?

Hiya Teafan
A regular night of the week looks impossible for both Spanna2005 and myself. I suggest you turn up at any mah jong forum meet you can make. If there is an excess of players we can always 'double-up' a novice with a more experienced player, so that they learn to get the hang of the game.
Can you make the next mah jong forum meet, which is Monday
16 January, at the Devonshire Cat, 7.30-9.30pm?
Red
goldenturkey 13-01-2006, 23:44 Sadly no.

Good point! The Fat Cat is an excellent pub. I'm only just starting Go, rated at about 25 Kyu, but I'd love to play some face-to-face games with anyone who's interested.
Sorry for bumping this but I don't get to get online too often at the moment. How regular is this happening now and is it always in the Dev Cat? I'd love to get down, kids permitting for a few games of go or chess or summat ....... what games are being played? I've read mah-jong is popular with you guys through the thread ;) , but what else, if anything else is happening?

Heya HappyHiipy,
We played Mah Jong last Tuesday at the Dev cat and we're playing again on Monday 16th (tomorrow). I expect that there will be two tables of Mah Jong again, and I'll be bringing a Go board and a spare set of Mah Jong tiles as well.
As for how regular, I think that we're aiming for every week, but it's not going to be possible to have it on the same day each week as the two Mah Jong teachers (Redrobbo and Spanna2000) aren't available on the same days each week.
If you can make it then it would be great to see you tomorrow night starting at around 7:30.
happyhippy 15-01-2006, 16:46 Cheers for that ptigga .... will try to get down ......

redrobbo 16-01-2006, 00:24 Hope you can make it happyhippy. A few of the anticipated regulars have other commitments this week.
Hope to see you, and anyone else what wants to learn mah jong at The Devonshire Cat, Monday 16 January 7.30-9.30pm.
Red
Happyhippy there is also a more general board-gaming night at the Red Deer on Jan 23 (see previous postings) I would be up for some chess there. Or scrabble or Monopoly, or Power Grid (you have to read previous post from Serafina).

Hello y'all!
Just to remind anyone who may still be interested about Monday 23rd January!
We will probably have a few different games on the go, so come and play with us - or bring one that you like to play but don't often get chance. Say about 7.30ish - or come whenever suits!
I don't think it will be as serious a night as the Mah Jong Society and we won't be doing it every week - maybe once a month or whenever everyone needs a games fix!
We'll just see how it goes...
See some of you then, then...
(If you don't know where we are go down Mappin Street from West Street, past Bia Hoi and you'll see us on the left.)
Spanna2005 16-01-2006, 16:37 Sorry I can't make it on the 23rd as my friend is taking me out for a birthday meal.

goldenturkey 16-01-2006, 22:29 Just got back, and a thanks to all who showed.
Mah jong and a game of Ptiggas that the name has passed me by, which was very good.
Redrobbo the site I mentioned was bizarregames.co.uk, but be careful!!!!
Ptigga showed interest in the tile game I mentioned (Sqairs), so I'll drag that along if I can get to the next meet!
Cheer to all again

Mancala.
It was a brilliant evening, I really enjoyed it thanks to Goldenturkey, Spanna2005 and Redrobbo. Congrats to Turkey for winning the MahJong.

Yeah, that would be good.

redrobbo 16-01-2006, 23:57 We had a brilliant time tonight! Only four of us could make it, as Plain Talker & Doublewood were in Derby for a football match, and Tracie is poorly - hope you'll soon be feeling better by the way
Players tonight were Goldenturkey, ptigga, Spanna2005 and redrobbo. We managed a whole round of the East wind! :wow:
Thanks to Goldenturkey for letting us play with his beautiful antique ivory and wooden tiles - that was something really special!
The scores.....
Goldenturkey = 450 points - the winner
redrobbo = 308 points - a big improvement! :hihi:
Spanna2005 = 166 points :thumbsup:
ptigga = 154 points. :bigsmile:
As Spanna2005 can't make it next week, I'll arrange a date with Goldenturkey and ptigga, and make an announcement under a Notices & Events thread. I will also PM everyone on the mah jong list.
I too can't make the 23 Jan event at The Red Deer though.
Chow everyone!
Red
PS Looks like Goldenturkey is interested in playing Mancala again - thanks to ptigga for bringing the game along tonight. I'm looking forward to ptigga teaching me Go at some future date.
Sorry i missed the MaJong last night. Ill try and make the next one. If you like Mancala, you should try it here:

Its a good game to play with if youre in a hurry
goldenturkey 17-01-2006, 21:18 :gag: NIGHTMARE:gag:
Sorry Red/Ptigga and all, but my initial joy at playing again so soon has been sadly curtailed.
I now can't make the Thursday 26th, but am free the Friday.
My Partner is playing in a piano concert and I want to be there to support her!
Sorry all
CHRIS:sad:
Please PM me with any other dates or options else I'm out of the loop again for a week.

Sorry Goldenturkey, but I've had such a response to Thu 26 night that we'll have to go ahead as planned - even with one set of tiles.
That means at the moment we have -
Feargal (possibly),
Edd, ptigga, Plain Talker, redrobbo (definitely)
Doublewood, Tracie, (expected).
We'll see what can be arranged for the week after next in due course.

goldenturkey 19-01-2006, 08:24 Hi Red (and everyone)....
If you get big numbers, and you need another set, let me know and we can arrange something about the bone/bamboo (get it back to me next meet!)
CHRIS
goldenturkey 19-01-2006, 08:28 ANYONE WANTING MAH JONG SETS
If you like the game and want a set, check out Ebay, as they always have resin sets for sale (about £15-20) and occassionally bone sets come up (cost a bit more).
I am seeing the Woodwork guy at the school I work at to make Mah Jong racks, so if that goes well I'll take orders.
See you all next meet
CHRIS
Bonny,
You are too trusting for Risk, but not Monopoly? I can't think of a game where it's easier to stitch people up than Monopoly!
Hopefully though, there will be enough people, and enough different games that everybody can play what they like, and maybe try something new. It would be horrible if we were all forced to play Escape from Colditz all night!
I have to defend Escape From Colditz. It's a brilliant game, especially if you play as the Germans. The rush of power you feel as you announce a roll call just as some miserable escapee is about to go under the wire. Or if you manage to gun one of the wretches down within inches of freedom. Can't beat it.
I take it the boardgame night at the Red Deer is still on for tonight (23 Jan) at 7.30?
Serafina 23-01-2006, 16:57 I take it the boardgame night at the Red Deer is still on for tonight (23 Jan) at 7.30?
Yep!
About 7.30, or whenever you can make it!
If you haven't been before ask at the bar, and Becky will show you how to get up to the function room...
Hope you can make it Code13 and Hearlon!
Spanna2005 24-01-2006, 09:10 So how did it go last night?
Thanks for the birthday wishes :D
Didn't make it last night but would be very interested in knowing when the next evening will be.
Sorry to Serafina for my no-show at the Red Deer, I was ill and my home internet connection is not working so couldn't let anyone know. How did it go? Any date for another evening?
goldenturkey 25-01-2006, 12:23 Hi Teafan
The only thing on the cards so far is Monday AND Tuesday in the Devonshire Cat for Mah Jong Madness.:loopy:

Serafina 13-02-2006, 16:24 Hello to all of you interested in the BOARD GAME night at the Red Deer!
It was a group of friends in the end, I think the idea of a board game club was kind of eclipsed by the manic Mah Jongers! :D
We had a great night though, and played Carcassonne, Prirates of the Crimson Coast, King's Gate and Scarab Lords.
Have been away for a couple of weeks, so haven't really thought yet about another one - but may well do soon!
Watch this space I suppose - but may start another link this time instead!
Fan of Tea - I tried to send you a PM, but you are too popular so cannot accept any more! Hope you are feeling much better... x :)
PM me when it next on, I am interested
I'd be interested in a board game evening as well; give us a shout when another one gets organised.
Vince
chess and go are good games. Also pits card game.
