My brother in law ( lives 90 miles away) has just phone up to say he has had to reinstall his Tiscali anytime internet access program and when he tries to connect to the internet he gets a message saying "error 630 switch your modem on" . I don't know what this means, can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to cure it .
Thanks

Not heard of error 360
Do you mean error 630 if so it is usually an hardware fault
First, turn off the computer and the modem if it is external. It’s possible that there is a bad modem memory stack and rebooting the computer will likely flush it. Reboot the computer and try to connect.
If that doesn’t work, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Modems -> Diagnostics and get More Info from your modem. If it fails, your modem driver is corrupt and needs to be re-installed.
If it works, go back to Modems -> General -> Properties -> Advanced and remove any initialization strings. Try connecting again.
If this fails, create a new Dial up connection using the same modem and try to connect with it.
After you have tried all of these steps, if you are still getting error 630 then it is very likely that the modem itself is physically damaged.

Yes it is error 630.
He has two internet connections a Tiscali "Pay As You Go" and a very recently installed Tiscali monthly package "Anytime" He can still get through to the internet with "the Pay As You Go" but not with the new "Anytime connection" and although the internet connecting box does come on and you try to connect a message appears saying, "switch the modem on error 630"
Thanks
PS it is an internal modem

His he using Windows 98?
The modem might not be configured for Dial-Up connection. To check your modem configuration, double click the Modems icon in Control Panel. This issue can occur if the Telephon.ini file is missing or damaged. To resolve this issue, follow these steps. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. In the Named box, type telephon.ini and then click Find Now Locate the telephon.ini file in the ISP directory, right click it, click rename, type "telephon.xxx", and then press ENTER. Then locate the telephon.ini file in the windows directory, right click it, click Rename, type "telephon.yyy", and then press ENTER. Quit and Find tool, click Start, click Run, type "tapiini.exe", and then press ENTER. Restart your computer.
Have Tiscali not been able to help?
