I'd be interested to read people's opinions and memories of the new defunct Roxy's Nightclub in Sheffield; especially in the late 80s and early to mid 90s.

When did Roxy`s close?
I used to go in the early `90s after working at the Hen and Chickens on a Saturday night, with some of the staff, one of whom I married!

wasn't it known as Barry Noble's Roxy? went there a lot in the 70's when it was the Top Rank. Had two levels and lots of fancy lighting. pretty flash compared with some of the other 70's clubs.

Didn't he officially die just before he went to live in South America with his money?

I thought Barry Noble really did die, which was not exactly alright for him!

I've been told that he had an official death quite a few years before his real death in the late 90's. Something to do with tax I believe.

I used to go in Roxy's aged about 16/17, and no lie, they did let anyone in. Looking back i don't know how we did it, it was so obvious we were underage. About 1998/99 was my peak time for crappy nightclubs, but it was fun while it lasted.

Chris.

I remember going back in the 70s when it was the Top Rank it had a teens night on a Tuesday, tried to get in on my Stag night back in 1981 but they wouldn't let us in because there was about 30 of us. Last went around 1997 but can't remember when it closed.

Appreciate some of you have good memories but doesn't anyone else think the de-funct building should be either knocked down or re-instated as a super-club for Sheffield...especially when all its being used for is some neo- Christian charity parade.

Don't get me wrong, (I'm catholic) but shouldn't such a big building (which is obviously on quite expensive land rights) and one of key location be put to better use???

am I on my own here or what???

My time here was the mid 90s and I must say the place had the worst fizzy pish in plastic pot I've ever tasted. Of course I went back the next Wednesday and the next....

Even got to dance onstage with Leo Sayer. BABY! Whats happening to the place now then?

I went to Roxy's from 1993-96 on either a Friday or Saturday night. When I went the place was always full.

At around midnight they used to play what they called 'party' music end encouraged people to sing along or dance. They had two girls in lycra cycling shorts dancing on stage; I think one of them was called Joanne.

They also had an area where they served food; burgers, chips that sort of thing. I never had any of it though.

What do other people remember from this time?

the daisy was a club near the cathedral....just near the top of york street where the sheffield star offices are.i think there's a news agents or a key cutting shop where it used to be just up from cavells......i never got to go in it when it was the daisy as i wasn't old enough but a few years later it changed to the geisha bar and i used to go in quite often.if memory serves me correctly the daisy was a very dodgey place to go.

Poxy Roxy's as I remember it. Wot a laugh. :D

There were people laughing, sad, mad, kissing, blushing, ******, dancing, shagging (supposed its called cavorting these days) and doing just about anything that could not be done at any other venue in the city centre - I was not one of them shagging people though.

Cant remember much else about Poxy's because I was always too ****** but I do remember it was one hell of a laugh unlike the "clubs" that are open nowadays in the centre of Sheffield, not that i'm getting old or anything cos i'm really not that old, honestly.

Had loads laughs at that joint - the good old days.

one of my teachers was telling us about it the other day and the way he put it was:

"you never walked out of roxys, you crawled"

sounds like a good night to me!!

as for the church thing.. is it actually used for anything anymore, as quite a few of my friends and people i know spend a hell of a lot of time sitting on the steps on the front of the old roxy and either when i have been there or when people have been talking about it, there has never been any signs of anything happening there at all!

I remember those early 90's once a month rock nights - lots of hair spray (not me you understand - I was far too grunge!) and taps that were far too difficult to work when drunk...

Those were the days...

been meaning to photograph that Roxy's logo for months - is it still up there??

If I remember rightly the Top Rank opened round about 1968 ,Tuesday nights used to be a good night all Tamla and Atlantic music .There used to be a D.J.that came from Radio Luxembourg ,somebody Prince who was quite good .I can remember going to "do's " there proper dinner and dances even doing the March of the Mods and the Valeeta .A lot of groups came there to promote their singles ,when you had to sell a lot to get in the charts! Saturday mornings they used to have a disco for under-16s ,it kept a lot of kids out of bother for a bit ,they also used to have a flea market there on a regular basis. The best night there later on was Thursday night "grab a granny " you had to be really struggling if you couldn't pull in there ! Where do all the married women go now to get a change of scene? The bouncers there were well hard and those steps coming out didn't half hurt your head when they threw you down them! It used to bounce round that area of sheff with the Fiesta ,casino and the Claymore which was only 1 of 2 pubs in sheff that sold Tartan bitter at that time .

I left ROXYS alone once.......but it was due to being thrown down the steps by that HUGE FAT BALD bouncer they used to have on the door. He was not the sort of bouncer to tell to "**** off"......pity I didnt think of that earlier at the time though.....and the ***** tore the sleeve right off my jacket.

Only went out for a quiet peaceful drink....honest....my watchstrap got caught round a girls handbag on the dancefloor and she thought I was trying to nick it.....could only happen once in a lifetime to anyone but Mr Big or T or whatever he was called decided I was going to get a crash course in pain.....

Didn't they ( sheffield city council ) also think of turning it into a car park too?... Hopefully it'll be turned into some luxury high rise apartments because we dont have any in the town centre. I just dont think the council is doing enough to provide luxury high rise apartments within the city centre . . please build some luxury high rise apartments!! please! please!

No. It belongs to Quintain PLC and has done for a few years now. I think that it's been empty since St Thomas's Church bought the Rotary Electrical site.

When I was dragged kicking and screaming into a discoteque it was usually Roxies or as we called it 'the cattle market'. Girls would congregate on the dance floor in huddled groups a collection of handbags piled in the middle of them, the guys would walk around the place alternating between the ground floor and the first eyeing up all the available talent. The average age of the clientelle was young in some cases ridiculously young and then every now and then you'd spot an old guy in their 40's complete with sweat stained jacket plying a young foolish girl with the watered down junk that was sold.
My only good memory of the place was when it was the venue for a lager promotion night with some fairly clever laser beam light shows, or at least it was clever for it's time.

I thought I'd just ask the origional question again as it is over a year since my origional post and in that time there may be new members who have memories of Roxy's. Also do people remember Cairo's, Josaphines or Issabellas (later Uropa) from around that same period?

The Crazy Daisy is Infamous for being the club where Phil Oakey found his backing singers Joanne Cathrall and Suzanne Sulley, legend has it that he picked them out from the crowd because they were good at dancing.... Mmm, call me a funny bugger but Id've chosen them for their singing capabilities?
I am a fan though Phil, of the girls too.

Oh those were the days! Roxy's was the best. No club has ever come close to it. We used to go upstairs and look over the balcony to see if we could see anyone nice men. Do you remember the bouncers dancing near the bottom of the stage area. How we laughed. The music, the laughs and the broken hearts. We met so many people who we still know today.

There were so many different things to do. Food, drink, 2 dance floors (early days that one), kissing on the stairs and getting in everyone's way, and so many different bars. Easily avoiding unwanted attention. Grab a granny on a thursday, party night on a wednesday. How I used to go and then get up for work I don't know but such fun days. Never to be repeated. The young of today could never have it so good. :hihi:   :wow:

Oh we were early nineties gang. When Roxys was at its best. the queuing up the ramp, the pushing in, the stress of getting your date of birth right for grab a granny night. The early days saw a lot of fighting and stabbing in Roxys. Lots of people getting thrown out of the back door only to come back round to the front and get back in again.

Roxy's rocknight on Mondays late 80's early 90's was brill.
Men in leather trousers mmmm them were the days.

I even had a membership card got in for free woohoo!
Still got it somewhere, shiny black plastic with silver Roxy's Rocknight logo on it.
Was anyone else sad enough to get one?

Does anyone one remember the Roxy's rock queen competition that was won by the blonde transvestite?
cant remember his/her name she was about 6ft4 lots of hair and always wore nearly there skirts.

Me and my mates used to go around awarding the butt of the week award, where any fine gentleman with a really nice rear end (in our opinion) was awarded with a pint of beer.
Excellent chat up line and frequently worked he he.

those were the days my friend....

I remember Roxy's very well

I got caught once selling the free entry passes to the masses waiting outside, The bouncers litterally carried me into the club by my hair (ouch) and after a considerably long plead for my freedom the head bouncer let me go without calling the police, pretty good of him I thought. especialy as I was able to return later that night and sneak my way in. Those where the days!

Wasn't that competition actually sponsored by Kerrang?
the club found out later that he wasn't really a girl and stripped her/him of the place won in the heats. There was such an outcry he/she was reinstated before the next rock night rolled around

wasn't it top rank in early eighties?

i remember seeing a battle of the bands competition there, 1981 i think. local progressive rock band 'haze' were tipped to win but were beaten by an awful synth duo who sang 'magazine girl' or summat.

didn't go again until 1999 or so when they started doing 50p a pint on wednesday nights!

I worked on the doors during the early 80s. when barry noble died they had a minutes silence for him at midnight on a saturday.
It was all going respectfully enough until someone shouts "is that alright fo ya's" the management went mad and ordered us to find the guy, we never did.

the worst where the student pyjama jump nights, shocking sights i tell you!

and they ran 'chey' nights for a while which stood for campaign for homosexual equality, those night where never any trouble and we'd just let the organizers run the door.

The christmas dinner do's where boring with one exeption when i was so bored i asked if i could help out the kitchen staff, they allowed me to light the christmas puddings,
one girl came through with a bit too much brandy on her puddings and as i lit them blue flames engulfed her boobs, she dropped the tray and we got a round of applause from the diners.

:loopy: Remembering all these nights out from years ago has made me depressed. I'm out in Rotherham tonight, ending up in Liquid.

I don't know if its my age or musical preferance, but i find the place annoying. Theres no way of talking to anyone (or if i wasn't married, chatting up the ladies), and it'll be snided with BF's. Excellent chat up line and frequently worked he he.

Heh - that was James/Janna. He/she was a regular at Rebels too. He used to hang around with his/her sister Debbie and sometimes 'Trish'. I wonder what happened to James/Janna?

Also - I don't recall you awarding me a pint of beer and now I am sad. :(

Still got it somewhere, shiny black plastic with silver Roxy's Rocknight logo on it.

Was anyone else sad enough to get one?

I've still got it- I don't think I ever paid to get in. It could have been something to do with the fact that when I put on my 'proper' heels and my littlest skirt I towered over all of the bouncers (I'm 6'3" and I had some 5" heeled boots) and my legs came up to the middle of their chests. BTW I'm not James/Janna- I'm a real girl, just a very tall one!

It was the cheapest night out going. At that point I didn't drink and since I drove my bf's car to park by the library and didn't pay to get in (and if you bought one soft drink you could string it out for a VERY long time) my only expenses were the ever-more-showy trimmings for my leather jacket and the 'big hair' products by the tonne.

It's still the only place where I would go out for the night by myself. So many regulars there that there was no need to worry about meeting up with friends.

Did you go to Rock Nights right up until they stopped doing them? I can't remember such a tall lady and I didn't drink either back then!! :)

The Rock Nights used to be on the first and third Monday of every month. Both upstairs and downstairs would get packed and they had both dancefloors playing different music.

Then it started slowing down, they closed upstairs, reducing us to one dancefloor and no access to the little diner upstairs where all sorts of comedy incidents took place.

Finally, it was down to one Monday a month and then the end came....Rebels had gone, rock night had gone and we had to go to Rock City in Nottingham or even Jilly's in Manchester to have any fun.

I think the original Drop at City Hall stopped too....

DJ Mutley (Mark) then started Reservoir Rocks at what was the 'Mandela' until years later, Corp opened.

Did anyone go to the Palais (London Road) on Tuesdays for the Goth night? That was pretty cool....people drunkenly building human pyramids when the Mission came on was always spectacular....heh

Forgot to mention the post-Roxy's Chips from the Option at the bottom of the ramp. Mmmmm......soaked in vinegar...so good.

And then if you didn't have someone to drive home, the battle to get a taxi from outside the Option...

I was a late 80s/early 90s Roxy fan and I used to go out with a bloke who DJed at the Wap, but then I left Uni and got a job which needed me to be on a motorway at 6.30am and bought my house. Death knell for all nights out (between the time constraints and serious lack of funds). I became a boring git during the weeks and did my rebelling at the weekends at bike rallies.

I used to go to the under 16/?18s night on Tuesdays, when my friend and I were 14. We both got our bums pinched for the first time whilst walking up the steps to the upstairs level. It would have been about 1973/74 then. It was just called the Top Rank then. They used to have nights which were sponsored by Radio Luxembourg ... Fab 208 ... and their DJs would turn up, Kid Jensen and Mark Wesley were the ones I remember seeing.

Around 77/79 it changed to Steely's ... when I first met my husband he was turned away because his trousers looked like jeans, they had a no jeans policy. Around this time they started to have the Rock/New Wave/Punk concerts there ... under another title, something like Improvision. Amongst others, I saw The Clash and the Stranglers there.

Does any of this mean anything to anyone?

First ever nightclub I went to in Sheffield: from 1997 on, student nights on a wednesday - free bus there, free entry, free beer (hofmeister in a split plastic mug until 12 - as much as you could drink, or rather how much you could get served with only one barperson on each bar, albeit with the tap permanently on flow!), free bus home.

Bliss. Memories.

God old Roxy's, went there in 1998, for a New Years Party, used to go there regularly after venturing from Berlins, classy or what looking back. I always remember the DJ saying grab yourself a lady it's the last dance and he put some right ****e on, only night club in Sheffield at time where you could gaurnetee pulling a bird on the "last dance", and having a chance to get your wicked way, what a nightclub!!!! I remember the pop and crisp nights on Tuesdays with great fondness. 7-10 every Tuesday for under 16's. I am 45 now and remember going there over about a 2/3 year period when I was 13/14/15.So it would have been 1974ish onwards it was called Top Rank. It was great !!!! i loved poxy roxy's, grab a granny night on thursday was fab. I went in from about 1988 till it closed down, i cant remember when that was, 1996 ish??? Was on the dance floor all night, great mixture of music. After that, brannigans at centertainment centre became my number one spot. Cant stand all this thumping music, prefer 80's stuff. Shame they dont revamp it and open it back up again

When did Roxy`s close?
I used to go in the early `90s after working at the Hen and Chickens on a Saturday night, with some of the staff, one of whom I married!

i used to go in the hen and chickens every friday and saturday night then on to the roxys club. this was in 1977-1980 though.

I remember all my mates going on a Saturday afternoon to see David Bowie, they all had the "Aladdin Sane" lightening flash across their faces. I mainly started going in when it was Top Rank, around 1977, first band I saw their was The Jam on their first ever UK tour ("In the City tour"), they came back a few months later on the "Modern World" tour. I also saw the Damned, The Undertones, Buzzcocks, The Adverts, The Specials, Dexy's Midnight Runners and loads more. It was a great "mid-sized" venue for bands who were too big to play pub gigs but not big enough to play the city hall. Then it became Steelys, then Roxys. I remember the Roxys ads on Radio Hallam, with a woman putting on a fake Sheffield accent and saying (in a "common as muck" voice) "Come and meet yer mates 'ere" or something like that, and Barry Nobles TV ads, in which he sometimes wore a toy policemans helmet for some reason and said "is that alright fer yuz".

It was a huge nightclub by any standards, I organised a few stagnights there, one for a lad from Hemel Hempstead who I worked with and him and his mates were used to nightclubs the size of a front room, they had seen nothing like Roxys before.

Me and my mates from the Gym would go when it was someones birthday because they would let anyone in.

I never went to "Fannys" at Owler bar, or "Turn Ups" at Nether Edge, but I heard these were quite upmarket compared to city centre clubs.

Along with the legendary Limit Club and the Crazy Daisy, Roxys has a place in most peoples memories of Sheffield night life from that era.

Ah the good old days,

Hit Man & Her, classic, ive actually got an old tape from when it was at roxy and i'm on it, in my suit, lol. Even managed to try Clives wig on, ha ha.

I remeber cairos and blast-a-ways in the place next door (forgotten the name) and berlins with the spin the wheel thing. Isabellas and kiki's and dont forget Henry's bar with the chandalier.

Does anyone remember legens, the downstairs bar at the bottom of fargate, used to walk down the stairs and there was a big video wall or when the foutain bar used to be down stairs (back in the days when the foutain was at the top of fargate. Back then those bars and the Stone House used to be the place to go.

I can even remember roxy's before they did it up, when you walked in there was rows of caravan/dinner type seats at the entrance, what a laugh.

It was an awful place but I have some great memories :hihi:

Hi,

Roller Discos used to happen every Sunday evening but I think it was called Steeleys back then - does anyone remember the final song 'Aint no mountain high enough' that they played every Saturday night before they closed ???

The final song I always remember was Shanice, "I Love Your Smile".

Remember when Cairos and Roxy used to give you a bottle of "bubbly" when it was your birthday.

Just remembered Metro bat as well, that place used to be packed.

I think most people went to Roxys to meet someone elses girl/boyfriend wife/husband.

Can anyone remember Steve Vaughan (DJ) or the tech staff: Andy or Ron?
I'm talking about the Top Rank days or Very early Roxys.

I used to go when it was the Top Rank Suite in the late 60s/early-mid 70s. My mum was bar supervisor and my dad was Floor Manager. The overall boss was a guy called Tony and the DJ was called Simon. When the Top Rank first opened it was classed as quite a "posh" venue and many large organisations used to hold functions there - it was a place where you used to be able to go and get dressed up to the nines.

The other place which holds fond memories is the buidling which was next door - The Fiesta Club where we often used to go after going to the Top Rank to see live acts - saw many a live act there including Bruce Forsyth, Guys and Dolls, Franki Valli and the Four Seasons plus other "big name" stars. It was quite a night out going to the Fiesta - does anyone else remember it? If I remember rightly I think there might have been a casino attached to it as well but I never went there.

The other well known nightclub in Sheffield of course was Josephines near Cole Brothers and many a good night out was held there. It was one of the best nightclubs in Sheffield at the time.

I only have memories of this place from roughly about 1996/7 (yes I was 16 and, yes they let me in woohoo - not as if it was hard though..) I suppose it was ok, just the carpet was real sticky and it, er..smelled.

But, for a 16 year old, it was a top night!

In my time it was called steeleys, late seventies, end of clam rock and the start of disco shortly followed by punk rock.

I can remember being on the huge dance floor with everybody doing a pogo and thinking the floor was going to collapse and swallow us all.

A few years later when I was more “sophisticated” and dating it was definitely Romeo and Juliet’s, the place for couples rather than “pulling”.

Crazy Daisy was good for a night out with the lads as was the Bier Keller followed by the little club upstairs next door, was it called scamps, failing that there was always Max-a-millions.
