I used to go when i was about 16/17 always with a group of friends as too scared to go on my own! I remember the dodgy food area & very dark toilets all the way upstairs which after a few pops could be v-slippy & always tripped up for some strange reason????

It never seemed full either!!!

The "special nights" were good too, Christmas eve, New years eve, Halloween etc...
Anybody else remember ?
i remember new year, specially 81,a few of us who were in armley together arranged to meet there for a "get out of jail" drink. one of the group, mick mcgarry, had just enough to get in and a pint,so decided to "borrow" some money for a drink from a stray handbag on the dancefloor, however,he had an attack of guilt whilst at the bar,and got caught trying to put the change back after he had got himself a pint. the cops were called, poor old mcgarry got locked up for the night, ended up back in court, and got 3 month for it.
i went in all its guises, top rank, steelys and roxys, from the kids saturday mornings, the teenagers tuesday nights, right through to the grab a granny.....happy days.

last time i went to roxy's it was for the free drinks, it was mental, people running from bar to bar to fill the glass up for nowt. as soon as the time came when you had to pay for it the place emptied. it was so funny . good old roxys it was a fantastic place. i also went to saturday mornings , moved up to the afternoon then progressed to the nights . happy days

Does anyone remember Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan doing the hitman and her at Roxy's?? I remember watching it on tv as I was too young to go to Roxy's then..

I won a competition to dance with Hitman and her for 1mth
I danced with jason Orange before he went into the takethat
I also won a wet tshirt competition , although I couldn't have my prize as i was under age at the time 1984 weekend trip to paris and michael Jacksons off the wall LP.
I had been goin to roxy's since 1983 when I was just 14 (looked older then than i do now) magical nights.... used to love the layout cus you could leave a bloke at one toilet door and walk out of the other one lol....
kept going uptil the late 90's suppose i was one of the original 'Roxy's slappers'
I even met my hubby there and weve been wed 20yrs now

When did Roxy`s close?
I used to go in the early `90s after working at the Hen and Chickens on a Saturday night, with some of the staff, one of whom I married!

My mom used to work at Hen & Chicks - Jackie - worked there up til around 1990's

I was a Roxy's goer in the 80's, sometimes "Grab a granny" night on Thursdays and Saturday night if we couldn't get in anywhere else.

Funny thing is If thought my kids were getting up to half the stuff we did and saw I would be horrified. There was a certain "Wild West" spirit during that period. If I'm honest, I think kids today are a lot more conservative than we were.

Hi Pete, you were a few years after me but you could have remembered me if you went there in '75, I was the one with long hair and a mustash, I used to hang around with Steve Cardwell and Alf. Cliff (can't remember his second name) was the supervisor at that time. were John and Mike the 2 DJ's still there when you worked there?

did you live in foxhill in the seventys if so think i know you

we always went in the fountain bar,, for some wiered reason they had about 16 tv screens together as plasma was not invented, they always had car crash video's on, i remember getting p***ed to f**k, i felt so ill so got to bottom of stairs and crawled up every one, i got to the top of stairs and when got outside i collapsed and actually fell into a girls breast, how embaresing that was, i remember coming round on the pavement outside the orchard pub, mates left me there,,i remember someone said penny for the guy as it was november,, the good old days back in the early 90's

i never remembered it as pig and whistle,, was it popular as not a very good name for a city pub,, pig and whistle sounds like a traditional old public house with a dartboard and a crappy pool table full of pensioners with half a bitter,, i hope people understand what i mean:loopy:

silks was average really, but back then all the pubs was ok,do you remember marples, that was a great pub with a good disco but has changed to a motorbike accessory shop now, silks was quite big and had a good disco so it was easy to walk from silks straight in to cairo's but still prefered roxy nite club

A little Ironic really because it was rebuilt after being bombed during the war by the Germans, with bodies still being buried in the cellar. And it is a German motorcycle accessory shop now, the bodies in the cellar must be literally turning in their grave! The DJ in the Marples was Christopher Nicholson, Chris and Rita's son, the landlord and landlady of the Parson Cross Hotel. Funny that Eh!

Mulbery now closed down last time I went into town, but the Stone House was just amazing with the laser lights and the little village at the back, well before it's time. I don't know why they did alter it because it has been rubbish ever since.

A typical night out for my mates n me back in 85 would be...Marples, Claymore then jump over the railings and into the Mulberry.Up the road to the Blue Bell, then on to Stonehouse. Then across the road n into the Blue Ball.Kicking out time we would try our luck at 10 bob snobs,(Josephines)if we were wearing trousers.Or down to Roxys to wait in the 5000mile queue.Always a great night in there, plenty of girlies and thee odd scrap. Then off to the Kebeb house and home to die.

I once saw a mate get the crap kicked out of him in Roxy's.
I bought my girlfriend a pernod but she didn't like it, neither did i so i gave it to a friend who came over to say hi.
Now this friend was slightly backwards and didn't usually frequent clubs or pubs but liking the taste of the pernod and slightly worse for wear he went to the bar and asked for a pint of the stuff, the lady serving him ****** herself laughing and he took exception to this, so much so he threw a beer mat at her which hit her in the face, next minute all hell broke loose and he got a right kicking from the bouncers, i tried my best to explain he wasn't a full shilling but it was too late.
The bouncers carried him outside and laid him down around the corner, the bit that lead to the sort of gallery you could walk round.
I got him into a taxi and saw him home.
I don't think he's been in a pub or club since.

Went to Roxys almost every weekend back in the late 80's early 90's. The upstairs dancefloor was my usual hangout then they remodeled it and it was even better. A lot of good memories. I remember my buddy falling into the urinal downstairs and his whole arm went into the trough....he was soaked with urine lol. Remember dancing around the dancefloor with my trousers rolled up around my knees to the song "Im too sexy".

Good days :)

I used to go in 93-95, I was 14 when i first went and I loved it! lol, Me and my friend dressed as devils one year, complete with tails we had made ourselves, or we used to wear knee high boots and "pop socks" along with a white shirt and tank top all finished off with a flat cap! quality lol, we used to go fridays and some saturdays, all the bouncers were perverts lol there was a big one with skin head who was nice looking, but they all used to get a slapper and go for a s**g in the upstairs disabled loo, class!, "Saturday night" by wigfield i think was playing then and we used to stand in a line doing the daft dance lol, Great laughs at that place but i must agree if i thought my son would go somewhere like that id go mad lol fortunately hes only 2! lol
Josephines was a dump and the vip area upstairs was always full of footballers doing drugs with whores stood next to them, Only went there a few times , thought it was rubbish compared to poxy lol

I remember Roxy's in the early eighties had two dance areas. The big one downstairs and a smaller one upstairs. The smaller one used to play alternative music such as Killing Joke, New Order etc. What was the one in the High Street on the left hand side going down?

And just like Kirky i also met my now ex wife there.

I went there from 1977 when it was Top Rank. I know one of the DJ's - a big lad we called Settee (Steeleys Disco). And I knew the chef, a guy called Andy who rode a Kawasaki Z1000. By the time it was the Roxy I'd grown out of that sort of thing and only went a couple of times.

Perhaps the best nights were the Pajama Jumps organised by the Students Union. A pub crawl down West Street then in to the club if you had a ticket!

If I remember rightly the Top Rank opened round about 1968 ,Tuesday nights used to be a good night all Tamla and Atlantic music .There used to be a D.J.that came from Radio Luxembourg ,somebody Prince who was quite good .I can remember going to "do's " there proper dinner and dances even doing the March of the Mods and the Valeeta .A lot of groups came there to promote their singles ,when you had to sell a lot to get in the charts! Saturday mornings they used to have a disco for under-16s ,it kept a lot of kids out of bother for a bit ,they also used to have a flea market there on a regular basis. The best night there later on was Thursday night "grab a granny " you had to be really struggling if you couldn't pull in there ! Where do all the married women go now to get a change of scene? The bouncers there were well hard and those steps coming out didn't half hurt your head when they threw you down them! It used to bounce round that area of sheff with the Fiesta ,casino and the Claymore which was only 1 of 2 pubs in sheff that sold Tartan bitter at that time .

yeh i remember the DJ they called him tony prince..the music was good too. i also remember the saturday mornings flee markets. saw love affair and The Who there too....you could always guarentee a good fight in there lol !!

I went when it was Steeleys on a Sunday Afternoon rollerskating, I also went when it was Roxy's, saw frank Bruno lose to Mike Tyson on the screens in there, Roxy's was the best, but if it was so good as we all remember why did it close down?? Most Pubs and clubs reinvent themselves a couple of times before closing, Roxy's never did it just closed and stopped being. I once saw plans for that part of Sheffield town centre, it was rufurbishment plans and Roxy's never featured, I wonder if it was due the same fate as the old ABC cinema, but it didn't get demolished before the project was shelved!??

Stefan Dennis from nieghbours fame once appeared at roxy. I remember him singing that dodgey song, then he started throwing signed pictures into the audience, which caused those at the back to surge forward, pinning those at the front up against the stage has it was pushed back a good 2ft. They must have had sore legs the next morning. Ouch!!

Met my ex-fiancee in there in 1989. I was 17, she was 15!! Honestly! Classy eh.

And I was on the hitman and her on the 5th November 1988 in there.

I worked at Roxys in the late 80's/early 90's.
Cant really remember anyones names, apart from old Mr Hughes - remember him going round checking on all the bars and having a shot of scotch on each one :hihi:

I remember Tony Hughes very well.. He was there when I worked there 1977-1980. He was Bars Manager then too! :-)

I worked here when it was the Top Rank. I had a full time job at the telephone exchange on flat street. I then worked some nights at the rank. Mr Hughes was bar manager then and I worked on bar 1 (first one you came to) or bar 5 (small one upstairs in back corner) A pint was 18p and shorts were only 20p Bring back the good times !!! They even provide you with a taxi home !!
