Thanking you all in advanced!
Lickable 18-02-2004, 08:16 PM Doesnt matter anymore, just bought a house there anyway! thanks!

DaBouncer 18-02-2004, 09:48 PM That were bloody quick mate!
Is it Nr the cop shop?
Lickable 18-02-2004, 10:23 PM its right close to the cop shop! just round the corner from it! is that bad???
yorkiepudd 29-02-2004, 04:53 PM Hi, welcome to Hackenthorpe
I live nearer the top end (nr Birley Spa School) and I can honestly say it is one of the best areas around here that I have lived in... that good in fact we have just bought the house from the council.
Enjoy!!!
saxon51 29-02-2004, 06:33 PM Lived in Hacky 55-60. Great memories.
Birley Spa Lane (bottom end)
Village School (now gone)
The giant bear's footprint on the old spoil tip across the valley.
The mother of pearl button factory.
The village shop with its YZ chewing gum machine outside.
Spencer's farm (now houses) and watching him milk cows.
Next door's Truimph Mayflower car.
Walks with mum and dad along the narrow lane (blackberrying) that is now Donetsk Way.
Sorry, I'm going all reminiscent-like. Been to look around recently, still looks good, tidy and safe.
Enjoy your time there Lickable (I wont ask), I'm jealuos.

Whats the story with the giant bears footprint ? not heard that one before.
saxon51 29-02-2004, 09:37 PM Its what us kids used to call a large indentation on the side of a spoilheap. It was in the shape of a giant bear's paw print. I'd say the spoilheap was about halfway between our house and Drakehouse, or somewhere on that line and could only be recognised as being that shape from a certain place.
Lickable 02-03-2004, 10:43 AM I have just been informed by 'someone' that hackenthorpe gets bad at night! Is there any truth in that?
steelblade 02-03-2004, 11:10 AM Lickable I have family who have lived there since the council houses were first built just after the war.
It has got worse in recent years but is there anywhere that hasn't?
Lickable 02-03-2004, 11:25 AM Heh! Thats true... When you say worse, how bad is that?
People always go on about places being bad areas... what actually makes it a bad area!
I am from the lake district and have never really witnessed any crime.
What parts of Hackenthorpe are good? Whats Springwater Avenue and its surroundings like?
Thanks...
steelblade 02-03-2004, 11:35 AM Not quite sure about springwater. My family live near the shops you know spar and the social club.
it's just kids that are a pain but they are a pain in other areas. There is nowhere that is free from kids causing trouble anymore.
Lickable 02-03-2004, 01:51 PM Trouble as in mugging and bricks?
Trouble as in shouting and graffitii?
Its always fun to be called names by the youngsters of today! And the hours of fun you get from reading the graffitii with words such as...
Waz
Cos
Luvz
Ere
9Ts

Do any oldies on here who knew Hackenthorpe remember PC 'Walt' Disney and his purple and white cycle, (and his cycle clips)?
ANGELUS 23-05-2004, 01:45 AM Hey everyone..
Me and the mrs are now a few weeks away from moving to
Hackenthorpe (Greenside Mews) to be exact..
can anyone tell me what its like round that area?
Thanks all!
owdlad 23-05-2004, 08:48 AM Markham, Disney used to live in the police house between the shop and the lane where you went down to Spencers fields and the footpath over to Mosborough. We used to watch the cricket over the road by the side of the lane down to the "cuckoo" and didn't Disney have a son who was a pain in the **** cant remember his name though but he thought he could get away with anything just because his dad was the village bobby.
Lickable 27-05-2004, 01:53 PM Angelus,
I have been living in Hackenthorpe a couple of months now and its great! Its really quiet and everyones really friendly. The only bad part is the shops, and i have seen far worse than those in my time.
I hope you enjoy the move, good luck!

Thanks owdlad, its all coming back to me now.
Wouldn't surprise me if Disney's lad isn't a copper himself. Wasn't his name something like Clearoff Yalittlesod?
ANGELUS 24-06-2004, 01:15 AM Just weeks away from the move to hackenthorpe now from Kiveton Park!!
Absolutely cant wait now
ANGELUS 24-06-2004, 01:16 AM Lickable-
Where in hackenthorpe do you live then?
Is it near greenside mews?
Just wondering because I'd like to know what the people are like round there.
Thanks for the welcome by the way 2!!!!
Wavey 24-06-2004, 09:49 AM Lived in the Hackenthorpe/Birley/Frecheville area virtually all my life.. get rid of the Chavs and it's spot on.
When they demolish the Vic Hallam estates (where I grew up - before you tell me off) and build real houses, things will change I'm sure.
Its 15 minutes from town, two minutes from the countryside. Pubs are a bit rubbish.. Old Harrow is a youth club (but i suppose it was in the 80s when I used to go there LOL), Frecheville, Plover & Fairways aren't great, Birley is okay if you're a regular, Sherwood is dire, Noahs is trying hard.
Lickable 24-06-2004, 10:27 AM Heh! I have to leave Hackenthorpe for a pub! I go to the Gypsy Queen.
They really should get some money put into the shops and hire a Chav Sniper, or something a little more legal! ;)
Wavey 24-06-2004, 12:04 PM Yeah, I tend to use the Birley which is the best of a bad bunch.. or go to town.
Frecheville shops used to be okay but they're all fast food outlets now virtually.
LOL @ Chav sniper.. a cull would be so easy wouldn't it? Erect a dummy phone box as a hide... steady Wavey, steady.
Frecheville shops used to be okay but they're all fast food outlets now virtually.
There is a high number of Take Aways in Frecheville but on top of that there's the Co op (complete with Post Office inside), a chemist, a hairdressers (v cheap), a Spar, a butchers, a greengrocers, a newsagent, a small branch of the Halifax (with a v. helpful independent surveyor upstairs) and most essential the new tanning shop that's opened up ;)
Wavey 28-06-2004, 10:40 AM Oh yeah.. I forgot about the other shops.. not bad really eh?
Still too many chavs though.
Raptornet 03-07-2004, 02:38 AM Hi there
I'm leaving home and looking for a decent area to live in. I'm disabled and would prefer somewhere where i can keep myself to myself and not be scared of leaving the car alone at night.
I saw a house on Weakland Crescent, and was wondering what that area is like.
Cheers
eltel 03-07-2004, 09:33 PM Having moved away from Hackenthorpe when I go married and now live just outside Leeds. I do visit from time to time, and although the area has changed to reflect the society in which we now live, it is a relatively quiet and civilised area compared with some areas up here in West Yorkshire.
Lickable 08-07-2004, 02:19 PM heh Angelous,
greenside mews is a really nice area if its what i think it is.
Shouldnt have any problems around there!
R.M.G 31-07-2004, 04:45 AM getting a council property on Hackenthorpe is bloody hard work!!!! if i wanted one at gleadless i could get one tomorrow....i think i'll wait lol no offence gleadless people
yorkiepudd 31-07-2004, 09:59 PM The houses in Hackenthorpe have been 'ringfenced' with priority to the residents from Newstead / Weaklands / Scowerdons estates that are being demolished over the next 5+ years.
Combine this with the high private ownership (currently in excess of 70% and growing) the chances of getting a council property here are diminishing faster than the wickets in an English test match!!!
