View Full Version : Post offices 'losing' mail
Not so much a rant, more of an observation, but has anybody else on here had mail not delivered after they have handed it to the counter staff at local sub post offices?
I don't post much mail locally, the wife usually does this, and when I do it usually goes in the post boxes......... and arrives.
However, a couple of years ago I returned a book to Time Life and as it wouldn't fit in the post box I had to hand it to the counter staff at Southey post office. I was told to put it into one of the sacks which were 'waiting to be collected shortly' by the van. The sack was on the customer side of the counter. I remarked that I wasn't happy about doing this, but was told that it would end up in there anyway, so I complied.
THAT PARCEL NEVER ARRIVED!!!!!
I informed the Post Office Complaints Dept who said that this practice was not legal practice as mail handed over and accepted was to be kept secure till handed over to Royal Mail.
.................................................. ..............................
Last week - Monday - I posted a letter containing a cheque at Norwood post office. As the post box had been blown up prior to bonfire night, I took it into the post office there and made to hand it over the counter. As the staff in that particular establishment don't communicate verbally - ever - the bloke nodded toward a sack on the floor which was full and on the customer side. I shook my head and pushed it under the partition. He took it and placed it to one side.
THIS LETTER HASN'T ARRIVED!!!
Now, the reason why I insisted that the bloke take responsibility of the letter is because of the lost parcel, and as far as I am aware the Post Office is responsible for mail handed to them until Royal Mail take it into their care and then THEY are responsible.
Either way, I have lost two items of mail - the only two - which I have placed in the care of post offices in the Longley area.
Anyone else had this problem, or is it just that I'm an unlucky bugger?
And who else feels as though they are interrupting these counter staff during their 'siesta' whenever they enter one of these sub(standard) post offices?
Not a  more a
I've had cheques for stuff I've bought on eBay go missing on more than 1 occassion...
I also recall buying Xbox Music Mixer on Amazon last year, used their free postage option, and the fecking thing got "lost" in the post! Well that's what Amazon told me after I'd waited 5 days for it to come, when Amazon usually delivers within 48 hours...
Annoying thing is, when you send something important like cheques in the post, they expect you to fork out extra for recorded delivery and all that rubbish, WTF?! If they think I'm paying extra for the security that they won't steal or lose whatever I'm sending they can bloody well teacakes! They should take more care of packages in the sodding first place FFS! :loopy:
dieselbabe 24-11-2005, 20:45 No saxon this happend to a few people i know inculding myself when used this post office in question when lived in the area.
And yes your right the bag is on the customer side next to were they keep all the forms and it is easy for someone to dip there hand in and take something.i seen this bag full to the brim on more then one time when i need to leave something in the bag to be sent off,and i too have had items not been sent to people,Now and then i do have to use this p-office and now no matter how small the item is i always get a free prof of postage form them as they dont care or belive you when you tell them you sent a letter or item from this p-office.Funny thing tho it only happend to me in this one p-office, but this is the only post office i know that keeps the bag on the customer side and not behind the counter.
candystick 24-11-2005, 20:51 I take parcels all the time to Southey Po and never had a problem with it not arriving at the other end.
You must just be unlucky :(

Either that or the staff at Capel St post office are thieving bar stewards!
daverity 24-11-2005, 21:11 Funny how they never seem to lose the bills though? Now that would be nice!
Don_Kiddick 24-11-2005, 23:17 There's a thief somewhere along the line from posting to delivery. :suspect:
Didn't you watch the TV doccy about it?
I agree with you on the staff at Norwood PO .My daughter complained to the post office only last week about their attitude and i would suggest u do the same ?
As to the non delivery of mail ,we here on Longley Farm suffered "non delivery "of mail for about 10 months until it transpired that our postwoman was hoarding mail and opening them too !Investigators found 23 000 items of mail at her house! She was given community service and a fine which is not relative to the crime at all .

As I said, the Southey P.O incident was a couple of years ago, and it is the only item I ever had to leave at the 'public' side of the counter. The recent incident - last week - was at Norwood and that is the only item I ever had to hand over the counter there.
I can honestly imagine the staff there - Norwood - to be of the attitude that 'He was awkward with us, so we'll get our own back by binning his letter.'
Don't the Post Office vet, train or check up on their minions anymore, or can any numpty and his/her extended family handle our precious mail nowadays?
I returned home from a week's break in Tunisia yesterday to find that a parcel had been left on the doorstep by the postman.
It had a customs label on it and it clearly stated in bold letters that the box contained jewellry.
Fortunately my neighbour had spotted it and took it in for me.
Yesterday I took a parcel into Crookes Post POffice and was told to leave it in a corner on a shelf ready for pick up.
I complied but was a little worried anbout leaving stuff that can be pilfered by any scroat who wants to thieve.
In my opinion the Post Offices have lost the plot in the UK.
Unhappy Days!
thats taking to the counter. mail doesn't arrive even in post box. Well three letters were posted for me containing personal leaflets and one of them arrived. that was between sept and now?
would like to know whats happened to them?
Moon Maiden 25-11-2005, 15:47 It was my sons birthday last week and had money pinched out of his birthday card.
It even had his age printed on the card!!
I appreciate that you are advised not to send money thru the post however if Royal mail know it is enough of a problem to warn people why are they not doing enough to protect us from theft?

Too right Pop.
Once upon a time, the Post Office, PO Telephones and Royal Mail were probably the most dependable institutions in the land. Now? It's a Mickey Mouse concern, run by muppets and served by miserable braindead numpties who don't give a gnat's for customer service as long as they get their inflated wages at the end of the month.
Apologies to those staff who work in the more friendly Crown Post Offices - they always seem to be of human disposition - but it's your Sub Post Office brethren who get up my nose mostly.
Didn't Post Offices once sell cards and toys as a sideline? Now it's cards, and toys, and magazines, and tobacco, and God knows what else.....and postal services as a pastime when they can be arsed.
Yellowrose 25-11-2005, 19:34 I always ask for proof of postage when sending packets or parcels, its free, so why not. I noticed that when I went into another post office (not my local) that they had the bags on the customer side and it did occur to me that somebody might nick the contents. Also the staff there were a bit clueless.
The staff at my local PO (Beighton) are excellent and I have no complaints, even when I have 10 parcels for ebay! The one in Mosborough is very good too.
My mum has had several birthday cards which she sent go astray. There wasnt any money in them, but I presume someone thought there was ...
Funny you should mention this, but at work we posted something out to a customer which went with the franked post and disappeared on route. It went from the post office off Fargate and only had to get as far as Ecclesall Road.
Greybeard 25-11-2005, 20:12 The PO we use in Oughtibridge is very good, not sure if it's a crown office but they do handle DVLA stuff and it beats waiting in the endless queues at Hillsboro' PO.
Staffed by a couple of ladies who seem to know the job backwards and are always pleasant and polite. Items for posting always go their side of the counter
