I am thinking of a camping excursion later in the summer and was wanting a decent, but intimate site on the coast. I was looking at Northumbria and the lakes. As I know little about the areas mentioned, I was hoping you all might be able to make some recommendations.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement but I stayed here (http://www.seacote.com/Tourers%20Tents.htm) (St Bees) on the C2C a couple of summers ago and it seemed pretty good.
I can recommend here (http://www.middlewoodfarm.com/) on the Yorkshire coast at Robin Hood's bay. Been there several times.
Although, having read your post more thoroughly, intimate is not how I would describe them. I know a very good site in Swaledale which is small and by the river but not costal. http://www.keldbunkhouse.com/

Now I'd not recommend Middlewood Farm - it was far too overcrowded. The guy put tents too close together, breaking the fire regulations.
That meant there were too many people on site, there were queues to wash up or use the showers.
We went a few miles away to the nearest campsite a bit further away at Hawsker. I went to the reception and said "I'm sorry I've not booked but" and the owner stopped me and said "Don't tell me, you're another refugee from Middlewood Farm!".

Each to their own I suppose. I've never experienced any problems or queues there. Hooks house farm is the next nearest http://www.hookshousefarm.co.uk/ but the ones in Hawsker are nice too.

Another vote for Hooks House Farm - stunning views and the owners are lovely.

We went to Northumbria last May and stayed at a campsite in Craster (http://www.proctorsstead.co.uk/) which is a good location as it's an easy drive to all of the places you might want to go up & down the coast.
It's not a small site, we had some misgivings when we arrived as it was bigger than we'd expected and our ideal sort of campsite is a small quiet one with just tents and basic facilities, but we'd definitely go back there. Although it's reasonably large, it's divided into one field for caravans, another for tents with kids and another smaller field for people camping without kids, and even though it was during May half term and beautiful weather, it was far from being cramped in the field we were in - there was lots of space and no issues with noise or feeling too close to other tents. It's about a 15 minute walk to the sea and the start of a path to Dunstanburgh castle, and the village of Craster is very quiet and pretty.
We're looking for a campsite for next week.... Broadings Farm looks brilliant but according to their website they don't open 'til April. :(
