Not too busy - depends when your travelling. Route to take would be through Hope, up the Winnets Pass, turn right at the top and follow the road to Chapel en le Frith. Go through the centre of Chapel to Whaley Bridge and then straight on at the traffic lights. This takes you straight down to Macclesfield. Journey time at weekend is about an hour. If you're planning to travel at peak times in the week probably best to add an extra 20 minutes. The roads are mainly pretty good but be aware of the forthcoming bad weather as the roads will be affected if we get any snow!
jojojoanna1 24-11-2005, 19:04 i used to live in macclesfield , i used to go towards bakewell , turn off just before towards buxton , you can by pass buxton but you have to know the roads . best tip is when you get just passed the cat and fiddle you pass a blind summit, just past that is a sign for the stanley arms . take that road and keep going straight on that road and it will cutt out about 6 miles and take you striaght to macclesfield town center , you know you are there when you get to biancis the big furnature shop
dinkdankdo10 24-11-2005, 19:19 oh brill thanks.
i will be travelling at rush hour so would you say it would take about an hour ? just over ?
roobarbpie 24-11-2005, 19:37 I'd allow about an hour and a half in rush hour. If the weather's going to be bad though, I'd go by train. The route to Macc is largely on windy country roads.
Acquire a bike licence immediately- they're fab roads for a blast (carefully and within the speed limits, obviously;) ).
sheff_minx 24-11-2005, 19:39 ive done (a few times)
Chapel En Le Frith - Hellaby, Rotherham
and
Chapel En Le Frith - Gripple, Sheffield
Chapel to Mac is probably about 20 minutes, 30 tops.
in the morning rush (hitting Eccy about 8.30) and its a clear run over the hills, the traffic picks up down Ecclesall Road. takes about 45 mins to Ecclesall Road, and an hour to Hellaby.
its a good/nice run, but not really in this weather.
[[e!]] its vini
tinsel_ninja 25-11-2005, 09:09 Well my girlfriend and I live in Walkley and she works in Macc, so drives it every day.
The best route is definitely (as Lancs lad says) via hope, castelton, winnat's pass, chapel en le frith, and whaley bridge.
There's really no traffic once you're out of the city. It's only slow if you get stuck behind tractors round a series of blind bends.
I've driven it in 50mins at about 3AM before, but it's normally a bit over an hour with other road users about.
It might get icy and windy over the next few days, but all the roads on that route get gritted, so unless it's thick snow, all should be fine.
TheRedWizard 25-11-2005, 09:20 Yeah - diitto.
Originally a Macclad and over there often. Go for the hathersage/winnets/chapel route.
Far quicker than any other route. 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 max.
sheff_minx 26-11-2005, 05:15 Tip: As you go out of Sheffield towards Fox House, don't take the turning signposted Chapel, as it will take you round the houses through Froggat and Calver. Instead just follow the road down into Hathersage and keep going!!
ps. Be sure to wave to my (real) house as you drive between Chapel and Whaley (its in a hamlet called Tunstead Milton, up a small track opposite Garrie Bevan's pink factory!!)
ridgeracer 26-11-2005, 08:34 If you get the chance go thru Buxton and take the Cat and Fiddle to Macclesfield. It’s an awesome bit of road no cameras, smooth tarmac and one can “drop the hammer “ as they say. Have fun keep it on the black stuff!
