Hello! Ive just moved back to Sheffield after taking a year out from my uni course and was wondering if there are any like minded people around who are into indie music and gigs instead of the usual cheese night/kingdom types (no offence!) I know it sounds sad but I havent met any people who are into the same stuff as me so far so it would be cool to get to know some! I like the Leadmill but havent been for ages ;-p

Not sure you'll want to meet up as I'm very unreliabe and old(ish). But I'm afraid the art of indie and decent alternative in Sheffield is dying as far as i can tell. The Leadmill on a Saturday is still decent but very samey (samewith everywhere I suppose if you go every week), do not go anywhere near it on a Friday? Not sure what the uni's do these days as I'm not allowed, not being one. Step On is decent the last Friday of every month at Aqua (Roundhouse as was) as for pubs, it'll have to be The Globe and not many other's to be honest. If I ever go out again I'll have another look on here to see if you wish to join, don't hold your breath though.

Leadmill still has what you want... on selected nights...

Try it this Sat for Black rebal motorcycle club, although i heard they have put it on hold for a few weeks... i am sure they will cator for a like minded audience though!

Sadly the 'indie' scene in Sheffield seems to have gone downhill in the last year.

But Fuzz and the Leadmill are about your best bets these days. And for something a little heavier Corporation.

Oh, and BRMC have cancelled their saturday gig due to a finger injury to their guitarist.

Not sure if I should be saying this, but you don't really need to be a student to go to Fuzz Club. The guy near reception will let you through if you show him your Fuzz ticket, which you would buy in advance. Or if you go with a student then they can sign you into the Union. Fuzz Club's great, playing a variety of music in both rooms with two or three bands on as well.
I'd have to say the best Indie night in Sheffield is Offbeat, in the Raynor lounge off Bar One. The next one is this Friday, but it's a Cure special. Website here (http://www.shef.ac.uk/~offbeat/), which has all the playlists so you can see just how Indie it is. Hope I'm not in any of the new photos!
Upstairs in Corp on a Friday is worth a try. 'Mainstream' Indie kinda like Fuzz Club, but more of the older stuff. (Probably because there's about twice as much music due to no bands)

I'm currently going to Fuzz Club every week, but I don't think I'll be staying long this Thursday because I have an exam the next day.

Fuzz Club is open to non-students so you don't need to be a student to go at all, just to be over 18 - I think if you turn up on the night security let you buy fuzz tickets - so you don't even necessarily need to buy tickets in advance (although it has been selling out recently)

I'm not a student, so going to sound ignorant, but where is bar one and the raynor lounge? Is it the one on glossop road? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?!

Selling out :o Maybe because I don't have a part in it any more, or rock has really taken off in the last three years :)

I meant selling out as in - all the tickets are sold in advance!

Bar One entrance is on Glossop Road, the raynor lounge is at the side of this.

I knew what you meant, thats what I meant. It never used to sell all the tickets.

Infact we used to struggle to get people in there, in particular the indie room, bleach was always busy.

ok, sorry getting confused.

I remember going to the first ever fuzz club, it was empty - and for a while there was no one there (had space to dance though). The bands they book now are better, but I think there's a lot to be said for The Strokes, The White Stripes et al putting indie/rock back in the mainstream - there's a lot more trendies at fuzz club now!

Im a bit lax with fashion terminology but can someone describe to me what a "trendy" is and also what a "towny" is and if there is any difference?
Im pretty sure I aint either being as I seem to get confused as either a goth or a skater. I dont have patience with make up for the former and I cannae skate for me life!

i wasn't meaning it as a good thing - just a fact.

Trying to come up with the proper definitions for you, mosherchick - will give it thought - I know what I mean!

I reckon trendy = someone going somewhere/ doing something to follow a fashion 'trend'
It's the difference between having having always gone to (eg) Rock Clubs because you're into the music and just going because it's suddenly the 'in thing' to do and loads of other people have started doing it so you want to fit in, even though you're not as passionate about the scene.
Trying to fit in bascically - the emergence of the new 'trendy goth' label over recent times is particularly amusing.

Um, townie being a Ben Sherman wearing type who thinks they're 'it' - goes out to get really drunk, doesn't care about finding good music and will start a fight with you because you "looked at them funny"?

That along the right lines people?

I think that sends about it, yes.

the trendies at fuzz are generally wearing 80s clothing, that dance to about 3 or 4 songs that came out this year and then stand around looking pretty.

That said, I'm not offended by them and am happy that they're there and that fuzz is busy - it's nice that indie/rock is the in thing.

did think it amusing at a party though where a whole room of students were dressed in 80s gear but showed blank faces when any 80s records were played (not obscure records by any means)

Where I come from trendy means virtually the same as a townie: the type who wear short sheeved "smart" collar shirts and nylon trousers with black shoes, all have identical haircuts going towards the very short side, usually found spilling a pint of STella while bellowing "get your knickers off" to the nearest remotely attractive girl, and usually shouting abuse at any male who has hair longer than a skinhead with the classic immortal line "F***** hippy b********d"..... (they dont know ahny other words apart from knickers or Lager)

is it different in SHeffield??? TELL ME PLEASE

A 'trendy' is different to a 'townie' - townies are the muppets you see with various shades of the same shirt on, black trousers, Kickers etc. - line 'em up and they look like Opal Fruits (sorry Starburst). Good place to find 'em - Empire Bar.

A 'trendy' (or try-hard) is more the type who goes out in an expensive designer t-shirt, designer jeans, expensive trainers etc. just because they think they'll get respect for it or something - personally don't have a problem with people dressing like this if they do it because it's something they want to wear and not because they think people will like them for it :) Good place to find 'em - Forum Bar

That's my opinion anyway :D

D'Oh! Ahh... good job someone pointed that out - I'd've probably arrived at the leadmill before looking at the tickets!!! Cheers!
