Me and my boyfriend have decided that we're going to go travelling after he's finished his PhD, and I'm getting dead excited already, starting to save up and plan routes etc.

So I was wondering if anybody here had any experiences of travelling or visiting far away shores, and recommendations of places to go/sights to see etc

:)

I went to work in the states for a while. Spent two summers across the pond.

Never been to the far east / australia tho.
America was great fun and a great country to visit.

However Thailand / New Zealand... now that would be an adventure!

I'd also like to do the Inca Trail in South America!

Well do you have any ideas at all about what you want to do? If you are looking for somewhere cheap and don't mind a bit of camping etc. then I'd suggest Morocco - house mate has been for 3 summers now and adores the place.

Give us some basics on what you plan to achieve etc. and we might be able to come up with something :)

Well I do have a preliminary list of destinations planned:

Russia, India, Nepal, China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand.

Not sure about America, as I feel that North America could very well take up a whole trip on it's own, not to mention a budget

I'm going to Thailand in April, can let you know in May what I thought.

I loved California when I went. Disneyland (the original), Baywatch beach, San Francisco (long drive up the coast), Death Valley leading to Las Vegas and even a trip across the border to Mexico. Just driving on the Freeways was an experience....lovely palm trees, warm weather, Hollywood....sigh.

If you are going to India do not miss Goa. Paradise beaches, warm and friendly people, parties on beaches, wonderful markets to haggle in and cows wandering all over the place.

One of my friends went to South America last year, Peru and a few other places around there, had an absolutely amazing time, didn't see Paddington though.

We decided to go travelling last year. Realised that there was a lot of europe that we hadn't seen, so went interrailing. Was awesome, some some amazing places. it's really cool the way you can travel for a few hours and be in a completely different country with a completely different society and culture

Ghana is wonderful.

If you can get there - we flew cargo plane (six jump seats in the back of an old Bristol Britannia) for free, with missionaries as fellow passengers. I don't even know if there are scheduled flights at all from UK.

Twas great as the cargo bay was empty outbound so we all got camp beds and sleeping bags for the 9 hour flight (very slow plane).

Flying at 7000ft over the Sahara was unforgettable.

I'll second that! I went inter railing at the age of 20 and loved it. OK if you don't mind camping and youth hostelling and sleeping on trains....takes a lot of forward thinking about where you plan to be that night and which routes you want to take, but it's a great experience.

I did a round the world trip, going to Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada (pretty standard stuff really), and I loved it. But I started out Interrailing for a month. Thought I'd see some of my own continent first, and I'm glad I did. Europe's got so much to offer.

But world-wise, it depends how long you're going for. If you've got a year, I'd say get a working holiday visa for Australia. Stay for a few months and see the sights, and work if you need any cash. New Zealand is well worth it too - South Island is so cool and chilled, and there's nothing you can't do.

Since I did my round the world trip, I've spent a lot of time in South America, and Peru and Bolivia are ace. Argentina's good too at the moment because it's been dead cheap since their currency collapsed.

It's a big world.

Hi Gang,
Greetings from Benidorm in sunny Spain, sunshine all the way until today when we have heavy rain. This is a rip offs paradise and ones Euros disappear like magic in the mad scramble to get rid of all ones assetts in the shortest possible time.

The temperature varies from 11c to 15c at this time or year and it was really cold in the mountains on Wednesday.
