Can anyone recommend a good place to buy prescription glasses ???

DON'T go to high street places, they just rip you off, check out this place

http://www.axisoptical.co.uk/

They supply the opticians so you cut out the middle man, turn up with your perscrition and you can walk away with glasses at a QUATER of the price of high street places... I went to one in town cos they had a half price frames sale, the cheapest wearable frames in the sale were still nearly all over £100, the 2 or three half price pairs were awful. I asked about lenses and was quoted just over £100. I went to axis and got moderen high quality frames with thin lenses complete for £65!!!!! BARGAIN!
I feel obliged to recomend them just to show how much we get ripped off, they have a large range of frames including rimless ones and you can park. Only bad thing is they are not open on Saturdays. I cannot recomend them highly enough.... DONT GET RIPPED OFF, go see them. I bet you save over £100.

If you want REALLY nice glasses, try a pair of prescription Oakleys.

Oakley are by far the best eyewear manufacturer in the world.
It costs a small fortune, admittedly, but you definately get your money's worth. I think it's so worth it. I swear by Oakley eyewear.

all good and well but if you want a pair of decent glasses at sensible prices you don't buy oakies! more oakies are reported stolen in the uk each year than are actually sold... intersting fact..

If your wearing prescription (and therefore clear lensed) Oakleys, who's gonna recognise em, never mind nick em?

Of course you could avoid having ANYTHING nice in case it gets stolen...

What you on about?? Whats the point in paying daft amount of cash for a pair of Oakies if no one knows they are Oakies! Do you get a badge with them saying 'genuine oakies' so all your friends think you are hip and cool??? you great muppet!
I bet you spent vast amounts of cash on burbury style clothes, still made by small children in sweat shops cos you think it makes you more attractive to the opposite sex!!!
Hmmmmmm.

Anyone know how much an eye test costs nowadays?

I am sure I need a new prescription, haven't had a test in over two years and I keep getting bad headaches,

But I think I will have to take the prescription away if I need new glasses. Will need to save up to be able to afford the glasses.

Daveboy - I don't wear glasses myself, but I have heard the same from others as neeeeeeeek - the high street shops have shop rent and business rates to pay as well, so the price and quality is not really up to much.

[hijack]
You're running well wide of the mark neek, and JTD was simply making a recommendation then pointing out that whilst they may be more expensive, they are worth it in his opinion.

No need to go round pointing fingers and calling people 'chavs' (especially when there are about 30 definitions currently circulating the net). What do you think a chav is anyway?

I think you will find these are Oakley Sunglasses that are stolen more than bought because they are instantly recogniseable.

Has it occurred to you that JTD does not wear oakleys to impress (they are not sunglasses remember) he wears them to see - so I would imagine he has chosen them because they satisfy his requirements for glasses, i.e Fit, durability, weight, positioning and appearance.

Also, interested in your fact that more Oakleys are stolen than bought - do you have any further details?

eye tests between 10 and 20 quid depending on where you go. If you work with computers all day then your company is obliged to pay for it.
Then just get your perscription and head to axis!

Of course I dont wear them to show off, I choose that brand because they are, by far, the best quality glasses I've ever encountered. The lense optics of the sunglasses are of premium quality with no distortion, and the frames don't end up falling to peices like all the other frames i've had. And yeah, they look good, too.

Oakley are the best manufacturer in their field and a lot of people agree.
If you dont agree, you've probably only ever seen fake ones, which might explain why you keep calling them Oakies.

You are paying for the name! Do you think they have some secret technology at Oakley headquarters that can make lenses that are far superior to the rest of the world??? Did Nasa use Oakley technology when they built the Hubble telescope? Can you see through walls and in infrared? As for the extra high grade metal and plastic they must use... Does it come from the moon?? Are these glasses made in special zero gravity environments by people genetically modified to have extra special powers that enable them to make glasses better than any one else in the world?? NO, they are all made in the same factory; these ones just have a different sticker. You cannot see any better, they can't make you fly, and they don’t make you more intelligent... You spend you money you takes your choice, the thread was about glasses, I suggested somewhere where you can get very good quality glasses as a more reasonable price than the high street shops.

Show me a collection of different pairs of glasses with the brand-names removed. By looking at them, I could tell you which were Oakleys.
Show me just the lenses alone, and I promise you I could tell you which were genuine Oakley lenses, and which were not.

On most lenses you get a lot of distortion around the edges of your field of vision. I find this very disturbing and un-natural. Oakley compensate for this distortion, eliminating the problem. They are also very resistant to scratching and other damage.

The frames are of much superior quality to all others I have ever come across. They are light, strong, retain their shape, fit excellently, provide a great deal of coverage, the nose pads do not slip, the hinges are strong and do not loosen over time, the lenses never fall out... want me to go on?

This is not a case of clever branding. This is about a maunfacturer who make THE BEST eyewear, in my opinion. You get what you pay for. I would never have any other brand.

I do not pay for a name. I pay for quality products.

Has it occurred to you that Oakley don't actually make the lenses??? You go to the opticians with your eye prescription; they make some lenses and stick them in the frames!!!! They don't get an immediate courier to the Oakley factory with your prescription in a brief case handcuffed to some dude in an expensive suit and Oakley glasses.

When you start talking to trees we will send you away!

I am totally aware that my clear prescription lenses are not Oakley products. My optitians provided those.

My comments on the quality of Oakley lenses come from years of using non-prescription Oakley sunglasses and goggles.

just been to axis optical V nice people would highly recommend them & they make sunglasses so I was asking them about the great Oakley debate, they said that while they are quite a good quality they are VASTLY over priced as they are mass produced the frames can be bought with out the tags for very little and the tint is just a standard procedure (they even took time to show me how it's done, see…. the nice chaps) all in all I was V impressed and have just put in an order for my glasses from them.

TA for the hint neeeeeek (ps: to not to upset anymore people) :P

Oh well, must all be marketing hype then eh.
I stand corrected, next time i'll buy Oakies, or maybe a nice pair of Bay-Ran.

Looks like I've just been paying for the name all this time eh.

Daveyboy - What do they mean "without the tags"?

Jack? Compared to the 2quid glasses you buy from the market?? Of course they are going to be better! So this whole discussion about a good place to get prescription glasses from and ALL your posts saying buy Oakley glasses as they are Sooooooo much better has been futile!!! You were not talking about Prescription glasses at all!!! :loopy:

Glad we have cleared that one up!
Anyway, as I was saying. Anyone who wants to get some prescription glasses would be advised to visit:-

Oakley frames provide enough benefits alone to make me buy those instead of other brands.

By pointing out how impressed I am with the (non-prescription) lenses I am showing how much I respect Oakley as a brand.

I was pointing out the benefits of the lenses IN ADDITION to the quality of the frames, which I believe is reason enough to buy them.

I pointed out that they do make good lenses in retort to your statement they are just generic products with an Oakley sticker.
Which is not true.

Go and have a look at a (genuine) pair of Oakleys - Prescription or otherwise. They are better than other brands. Much so IMO.
I'll carry on wearing my Oakleys, you stick with your lesser quality glasses.

As for Land Rover, you either get it or you dont. You obviously dont, so I wouldn't even be interested in getting you started.

Well this has all been amusing!

I used to wear glasses before going over to the contacts you sleep in (fantastic).

Anyway, I went to an opticians (can't remember name but not a chain, just a one off) and fell in love with some frames that happened to be DNKY, which were very very expensive and claimed to be the best made etc etc. The optician very kindly told me I could order the exact same frames from the company who make the frames for DNKY, only difference being it would not have the name on it. Fantastic, saved about 250 quid and to be honest didn't want the name on them. I had only picked the DNKY ones up by accident and loved them.

So beware, it is the name you pay for.

You are a marketing dream! You should try some of the italian companies out there that are specialists in sunglasses and a fraction of the price of Oakleys. In fact there are loads of other makes that have the quality you are talking about at a fraction of the cost, you just haven't heard of them.

I wish I could get Oakleys without a badge for £250 less. Would have saved me a fortune. If anybody knows how/if I can do this, i'd be very greatful!

As for the lenses you sleep in - can you tell me a bit more about what you think cos i've been considering them for a while. I can't be bothered with the saline anymore...

Just bare in mind that I'm not judging them on their name. I'm not a badge monkey. I have only spoken of my personal opinion of the quality of the Oakley products I have owned. Which I have always sworn by, and never had problems with.

I'm not sure about who makes the Oakley frames. My last post I spoke of italian companies, but that was to do with good qulaity sunglasses as an alternative to Oakleys. I don't know much about Oakleys and who makes them, other than my brother lost his and was gutted!

Contact lenses, £30 a month delivered to my door from D&A (although can get cheaper from specsavers, I just prefer the care you get from D&A). Put them in and leave them in for 30 days. I love them to bits. I am pretty blind so have to wear something to see. It is so nice to wake up in the morning and see, fall asleep watching TV at night without worrying about breaking glasses.
The material lets in something like 80% more oxygen hence how you sleep in them, and the polymer used doesn't allow build up of protein for 30 odd days. You do get solution and a case provided each month to take them out if you choose to. I take mine out once or twice a month, rinse and put back in.
I used to wear normal lenses and found my eyes dried out a lot, but these ones I don't notice I'm wearing them. Very occasionally if in smokey pub I need to put a couple of eye drops on them, which I carry round with me anyway. I would never go back to glasses or normal contacts now.

Just been and got my eyes tested. Went to Specsavers, cost me £17 :o

Got given a new prescription :( More expense.

The optician suggested I maybe should consider contact lenses. Does anyone have any advice on the pros and cons of contact lenses? I would only be required to wear the one, as my other eye is near on perfect.

I am not one for spending time pampering myself, so my worry is contact lenses will be time consuming in having to clean them, take them out, etc.

Also can anyone give me rough prices of glasses that look nice but aren't too pricey from axis optical? As specsavers have a 2 for 1 offer on at the moment for glasses over £75.

Hmm I'm not exactly into pampering myself a great deal, but I dont mind sorting lenses out. Once you get used to it, which is pretty quick, it takes about 30 seconds to sort your lenses out evry morning and night. No great hardship really, but it does make it awkward if you want to stay out all night. You have to plan ahead if you're gonna stay away from home for the night, cos you need to remember your solutions etc.
You cant just decide to not go home. Which I find a bit of a pain.

Other than that, it's fine I reckon. Feels like a bit of a chore, but you get used to it.

Skatiechik, my glasses from axis cost me £65 complete, frames, thin lenses, they could have made them in about 25 mins but i could not get out of work so collected them the next day, I have modern frames, slim ones, with sgrung arms, similar ones in town were £100+ fort just the frames!!!!! honestly, go check them out, easy to get to, easy to find, you can park outside!

I tried contacts but didn't really find them all that useful.

I could only wear them for 12 hours so I always had to decided if I was going to wear them in the day or at night. If I wore them at night I knew I had to get home and take them out at a certain time. Perhaps I was a bit obsessive about it but you can't be too careful with your eyes can you?

Also one time I got plastered and forgot to take them out when I went to bed. I woke up and I could see, I knew then I'd left them in!

After that little episode I decided to stick to glasses.

Are the monthly contact lenses expensive?

Also how does it all work? Do you just go to the opticians once a month and pick them up. Or do they need to fit the etc?

I have no experience on contact lenses full stop so any information on them would be helpful.

Still deciding if I would be better off just getting another set of glasses.
