Went up to Leeds on Friday night to visit a couple of old friends.
After having drinks round several of the popular bars, we made our way down to a small backstreet to Mojo, which is an excellent little place, had lots of northern soul music on, excellent spicy blood marys!.
After that we went next door (there was no name on the front, so I've no idea what it was called). This place was amazing! Dimly lit with candles on the tables, small dancefloor. It played all the latest indie music (i.e. Kaiser Chiefs, Arcade Fire, etc.) and the best thing was that they served lots of obscure foreign bottled beers, and a means lots! (where else can you get a bottle of Kuppers Kolsch!)
Why or why doesn't Sheffield appeal to the broad range of our musical/alcoholic tastes?! These sorts of places in Sheffield would be packed to the rafters!

In my lil opinion, there seems 2 be more people in Sheffield into decent stuff but we don't have anything like Hi-fi, wardrobe etc....people seem too concerned with style over content....

There are already places playing northern soul.
There are already loads of places playing the latest indie music.
There are already a number places selling obscure foreign beers.
Maybe not a combination of all three, but they're definitely out there....

Where exactly do you mean?
The places in Leeds JA5E is on about are more 'bar' than 'nightclub'. I know exactly what you mean - you just stumble into a good half dozen such places around Leeds on an average evening without really looking for them and you think 'why aren't there places like this in Sheff?' Sheff has a much better spread of live music venues than Leeds so we should also have some bars that sell to the people that go to those gigs. Sheff people are going out of the city for this kind of entertainment - we should keep them here instead. So yeah, build it.
Most of the obscure foreign beer places in Sheff tend to be mainly geared to the real ale crowd rather than your indie types. Apart from the Washington and the Grapes you can't really do both in the same place just yet. But we live in hope.

I dont think that Sheffields got the same kind of properties available and spaces to keep things interesting. The city centre doesnt always attract the kinds of punters you would expect to fill such establishemnts and if yo nice little scene. ahh what am iu find a space outside of city centre its hard still to get the punters in. As the promoters on here will tell you its ghard enough at times to get punters in through your doors. Having said that you go to a small town like chesterfield/carlisle and you kind find some alternative boozers/bars with a different feel to em similar to what u are talking about in Leeds (is the green room still going?). Er anyways, what was the question again?

Try Plan B at the Washington , we play Northern Soul stuff mixed in with stuff like the Specials,Dexys Midnight Runners, gang of four, the clash & loads of other stuff. The next Plan B is on thursday 10th December from 8pm.
Couldn't agree more Bilge. :)
I don't really want to go to one place for the quality beer, then another for the music. Surely theres a market for both. There's lots of treads on this forum revolving around the 'indie night out required' theme, and the only answers tend to be leadmill or fuzz club. There's surely more of a need for this, especially pre-club or late bar.
Thanks for that Scott, will give it a go.
