if any one is driving north on the M1 over the Tinsley viaduct, look over towards Rotherham and see the house at the bottom meadowbank road.
You will get a very festive surprise.

I'd be interested in knowing what your objection is to a few Christmas lights on the Northern Avenue shops in Arbourthorne. I happen to be the councillor for this area, and was instrumental in getting these Christmas lights put up, plus those around the Heeley Green shopping area.

The switch-on at Arbourthorne, which was undertaken by two little girls who live locally, was well supported by approximately 100 residents. There was hot drinks and mince pies, and I played Santa (at both venues). Everyone had a great time.

What's your gripe against a bit of Christmas cheer? You're not related to Scrooge by any chance? :suspect:

A number of the Councils area panels have used part of their budgets to help community groups to fund the Christmas lights in some of the shopping areas.
Contact your area panel to see if they are doing that.

I would love to assist Tony, but my remit doesn't extend beyond my ward. I used some Area Panel funding to pay for the Christmas lights in Arbourthorne and Heeley Green.

The clown who rode a unicycle and gave away balloons made into the shape of dogs, etc, was a huge hit with the kids at the Arbourthorne switch-on. Given the tremendous local support for this initiative, by both residents, shopkeepers, and community organisations, I have every intention of repeating the events next year. Hopefully, goldenbabe1966 will want to join in the Christmas fun next time?

My thanks to Arbourthorne Pioneer Forum and Heeley Development Trust for their support and hard work in arranging the lights and for organising the switch-on at their respective
locations.

Well done for allocating some of that budget.

Now, let's see if we can spread the Christmas cheer across the city next year? :) Can you put in a word?

Better if you contact the members of the South West Area Panel directly with your suggestion for putting up lights in Ecclesall Road & Fulwood Road.

Members of the Panel =
Cllr Roger Davison
Cllr Kate Dawson
Cllr Sylvia Dunkley
Cllr John Hesketh
Cllr Keith Hill (Chair)
Cllr John Knight
Cllr Janice Sidebottom
Cllr Anne Smith
Cllr Michael Waters

Trust this helps in your campaign to spread some Christmas cheer!

You may wish to travel along City Road and feast you eyes on the one or two houses that have been festooned, to cheer the wary traveller and bring a bit of light in to their day. And further along to Mansfield Road at Freshville more wondrous illuminations.
Then wander along to Dore and up Abbydale Park Rise to see the festive cheer along the road.
:) :) :) :)

Heeley Green has lights and apparently so does Firth Park. The house at the bottom of Meadowbank Road is certainly a sight to behold; I might be wrong but I think it's also a kind-of memorial to a family member who sadly died as well. Been down Prince of Wales Road tonight and there's quite a lot on there. The bottom of Standon Road is definitely a mini Golden Mile and Blackstock Road has loads on, on both sides going up to Norton.

i have no odjection to christmas lights they look very nice ,but the residents in the area of northern ave.would surely have benifited more had the area panal funding been used for security cameras.

CCTV or xmas lights? i would guess that a community coming together to celebrate switching on xmas lights (talking, getting to know each other etc) would be better value for the taxpayers money than a few more CCTV cameras. surely a tighter knit community is far more effective at tackling crime than CCTV cameras? happy to be pointed towards evidence to the contrary...

incidentally, my favourite xmas house is the one in the bottom of Upperthorpe - fantastic this year (check out the elves making toys in the shed...)

I have absolutely no objection to x-mas lights but was amazed to see that the city centre lights were on at 2.00pm. It was a gloriously sunny day.......and they say they are using our council tax wisely........

I have had several approaches by residents to consider CCTV cameras around the Northern Avenue shopping precinct. As a result, I organised a site meeting on 30 November with the new Safer Neighbourhood Police Inspector, the Area Panel Co-ordinator and the Area Community Safety Officer. We talked to various shop-keepers and shoppers, and we toured the front and rear of all the premises.

Although we discussed CCTV, the advice from the police and community safety officer that I received was that there are more effective means to improve community safety and security in the shopping area. We will now be pursuing these ideas.

I have asked the Policer Inspector to consider locating his new Safer Neighbourhoods Police Team to the Arbourthorne shopping precinct area. I am pleased to announce that my suggestion was accepted in principle, and I have now set up a small team of council officers to investigate suitable premises.

For a modest funding investment, the Christmas lights in both Arbourthorne and Heeley Green have proved a popular decision. To echo jfoe, the Christmas lights switch-on brought the respective communities together, and everyone who attended had a great time. Community interaction is also an important means of providing community safety. I hope we can find a bit more funding next year to build on the success of this years Christmas lights.

Hiya goldenbabe1966.

Glad you cleared that up for me. But when you originally posted asking if the idea was loopy or not - it may have falsely given an impression of your own views?

Best wishes & Merry Christmas!

Tony, get yourself up to Ivy Park Road.

As you come out of the s-bend (Gladstone Road/Ivy Park Road) there's a house on the left (stunning in itself) with the best, most beautiful and tasteful Christmas lights on.

There are 8 foot tall Toy Soldiers and a Santa on the roof. We show our kids these decorations every Christmas (and I recall when, once along ago Sheffield City Council put on a display we could be proud of).

I bet the illuminations cost of packet as will the electric bill.

Having said this, knowing whose house it is might explain why he can afford such brilliant deccies!

When I win the Lottery I'm going to buy this house (though it might help if I actually bought a ticket once in a while).
