The other day I went to Huddersfield on the train and noticed that at each tunnel there was a sign showing:-
1) the tunnel number
2) under that there was XXm (which presumably refers to metres)
3) at the side of that was XXch (which I assumed refers to chains).
Now, as everybody knows, a chain is 22 yards long and so I expected the distances (?) to be the same but measured in metres and chains. I was wrong the two measurements bear no relation to each other.
By this time I was totally intrigued so went to the Staition Masters office when I got to Sheffield. They told me that the figures refer to the road bridges over the tunnels but couldn't t tell me what the actual measurements are of.
Can anybody help?
