I have been going to this restaurant for over 6 years, despite its previously dingy looks and decor the food and service has always been excellent. (even though I can't spell its name!! ha ha)

I went in this sat and have to say was the worst service have had ever. They just didn’t have a clue!!

They got our food order wrong on all 3 courses in one way or another, here is a list of errors:

*One soup instead of 2
*Gave me meat spring rolls and not vegetarian, luckily I didn’t eat them b4 they took em back as had to wait 5 mins for other peoples food to arrive.
*Our 1/4 duck was tiny, even compared to the other couple on our table, and very pink (looked undercooked)
*Hoi Sin sauce was watery and weak, not like has always been in the past.
*No finger bowls even though people were eating finger food.
*Twice brought us drinks that were other peoples
*I asked for no Mushrooms, there was 2 types in there!!
*Vegetable dish had tomatoes in
*Although we werein 2 couples and ordered the same number of courses, our food was given to us staggered meaning food went cold while were waiting for the other half to arrive.
* After asking for the bill twice and waiting 20 mins we just got up and payed at the door as we left
For the first time EVER, I left a restaurant without giving a tip!

The only plus was the Stones beer was clear for a change, but I have never gone there expecting a good pint anyhow!! Ha ha

Whats other peoples experience? I will be giving it one last try and hoping this was down to a ‘bad day’. I really hope the place hasn’t been buggered up by its change of name and smooth walls!

Been before and after the renovation and always had a really nice meal, last time I was in was August just after it reopened and the food was delicious.
The take-away food is also just as good.

It must have been an off night at the Hei Moon

i always find it a bit cramped,
recently discovered mr Tse's at side of deep end,
the nicest food ever, and the service was good.
great for an intimate meal with the missus.

I posted a similiar message on here a few weeks ago. I'd heard great things about Excelsior so when we moved to our new house (just behind the restaurant) I eagerly waited for it to re-open after being refurbed.

We went to Hui Moon a couple of months ago and found it disgusting. It had so much MSG in it that me and my partner ballooned. I literally couldn't get my rings on it was that bad. It took us about a week to get over it.

It's always empty but whenever I see someone going in when I walk past I feel like telling them not to bother.

Absolutely disgusting, avoid at all costs!

Just my two pence worth!

MSG really?? Must say have never noticed it in excelsior b4.

Bit of advice for ya tho! there are 3 'chinese' take aways over by Lepins lane food central. There is one (the small one a few doors down from the fish bar, I THINK red coloured front) that give utterly ridiculous huge sized portions. Its kinda quantity over quality IMHO, BUT its a MSG diet second to none! If your affected by it I recommend you avoid. ;)

Not tried the other on the same side, the one accross the road isn't bad but wasn't overly impressed their last time either! I sound like a right whining old man don't I ?? ha ha

Might try Mr Tse, spotted it a couple of times and though 'I wonder'

:)

I went a few weeks ago - loved it. Food was cooked to perfection, nothing missing, just as it was ordered.

By the way, isnt a vegetable dish supposed to have tomatoes?

Hate to be ignorant, but what is HMG, MHG, whatever?

Canton King is a bit greasy, but good value for money since you get absolutely tons, the one next door (mandarin palace or something) is really nice, not greasy, but just don't get as much - but I prefer it, and the one opposite - I can't remember it being that nice!

MSG is monosodium glutamate, a chemical that occurs naturally in many foods and condiments at a low concentration. It makes food taste better, and so some cuisines routinely add extra MSG to food in a similar way that we add salt.

The majority of oriental food has natural MSG in it from soy sauce, and then has extra added MSG. The quantity added depends on the individual chef, but some people suffer allergies or water retention from large quantities. A lot of people just think that 'the food tastes really tasty today' when it has loads of MSG in though.

Personal preference is to eat food and taste the natural flavours so I would choose less rather than more MSG, but there is no such thing as NO MSG as it's naturally occurring in food.

China cuisine on middle wood road is the tops, granted you don't get the huge portions like next door but, after speaking to a fireman who was involed in the clean up after the last lot of floods, the one to avoid is the one with huge portions! and it all tasts the same at that one too.
