My PC connects to the net through my wireless ADSL router and so does our lass with her laptop.
This works ok but the other day her friend came round with her laptop and tried to connect.
I've got WEP security and only my MAC addresses are allowed through the router, so I added her MAC address in, told her my WEP key and thought that would be that.
She connected fine and got the correct DNS info from my router (correct IP & gateway); all was as it should be but she couldn't get on the internet?!?
Any ideas?
Cheers.
PS She could see the local network (our PC's) from her laptop.
Sounds like a cached DNS fault.
Next time she visits try going into Run then type cmd and at the dos prompt type: ipconfig /flushdns
We get this problem quite a lot but other times another PC can connect without any problems at all.
The other thing to check is that her internet connection settings were the same as yours and that her firewall was permitting the same ip address range as yours... yours might be say.. 192.168.1.XXX and hers might be 192.168.0.XXX (she prob wouldn't see the network if this was the case though)
Thanks for the relpy, I'll try it later..

I've noticed this problem on my Netgear router, only with the wireless laptop. I noticed that the problem went away when I turned WEP off but let MAC authentication on.
But I don't use it much so didn't bother looking into it.
ipconfig /flushdns worked!
Another related problem though; I installed Linux (Knoppix Live) on my laptop, configured this with my router and once again all was fine (correct dns info etc), but no internet!!!
I tried the Linux equivalent to flush the dns but there was none to flush because it was a new install?!
I'm starting to think it may be my router D-Link 54mbps DSL-G604T Wireless ADSL 4 Port Modem Router.
Any more ideas?
Cheers...
PS Same problem with or without WEP...
Get and install the firmware update from D-Link
Set your wireless transmit channel from the default up to 10 or above (your PC's will auto adjust)
I use this router at home and although it's a very good router it did have some conection problems before the firmware update. Do a bit of reading on how to do the update first and it might be worth while saving your config file as the update will clear everything from the router.
EDIT: Set the transmit to g Only if all your devices are on g there's no point in using b as well ;)
dont know if its related.
father in law is unable to access secure sites, worked on monday wont work today.
shows dns server error.
wanadoo are isp & totally useless(his words). Any ideas.
I've had similar problems with Dlink routers when used with Belkin and Intel WLAN cards. In your router's configuration menu you can find the addresses of 3 DNS servers. Try entering them manually into the settings of your WLAN connection and tell it not to get the DNS address automatically. This cleared up the problems I was having.
Flashed the firmware, all is fine!!! Thanks for the heads up mimic.
Cheers.
No problem ;)
Glad you got it sorted
