View Full Version : Anti-perspirant and aluminium
Did the recent press coverage of the possible link between the use of anti-perspirants and breast cancer alter your use of the stuff?
It did for me and now I use aluminium free deoderant. It is OK at the moment but as it is not an antiperspirant I fear that come the summer I may be looking to an alternative.
I'd be interested in Phans take on this as he seems to know all about scientific matters.
And don't forget you fellas that men get breast cancer too.
The breast cancer scare didn't stop me from using anti-perspirant, but the nasty cyst I got in my armpit a few months ago did! It was the foulest thing ever - huge, throbbing hot lump that finally exploded after a hot compress. It wasn't pretty, was very painful and all from a pore blocked by anti-perspirant.
I didn't go to the doctors for it, but mentioned it to her on my next visit and she said it's quite a common thing as anti-perspirants stop you sweating by blocking up your pores. Deodorant only for me now thanks - would rather be a bit damp than go through that again!
Aluminium in products can also lead to alzheimer's disease.
It's amazing how many products we use daily have it in them: Anti perspirants, baking powders, bleached flours, pain killers, grated cheese, beer and even table salt. Plus cookware, pots and pans etc. Its also in our water supply.
Aluminium is highly toxic and can impair the kidneys functions. Plus an accumulation can effect the brain's functions leading to seizures and memory loss. Scary stuff. :(
DaBouncer 16-02-2004, 08:00 So why the hell is it added stuff in to stuff; food produce especially??:loopy:
Cheers for the info folk.... must check my anti perspirant etc now!
Daveyboy 16-02-2004, 09:42 cheers for the advice i'll stick with products containing lead from now on ;-)
fnkysknky 16-02-2004, 11:43 Same reason as with everything else DaBouncer - it does a job. Most things aren't safe to be honest, as long as toxins are kept below certain levels though you're usually safe...
garrence 16-02-2004, 13:30 So what anti perspirant doesn't contain aluminium? Do deodorants (with no antiperspirant properties) also contain it?
And why am I getting bothered about it when the intake from my armpits is probably far less that what I eat??
Moon Maiden 16-02-2004, 13:35 Does anyone remember the links between talc and breast cancer a few years ago. It never bothered me cos I have never used the stuff.
Whilst we are on odd substances in products - mineral/parafin oil that is used in things like vaseline and baby oil has some very questionable links to a whole host of diseases! (May find the list if I can be bothered as I forget off the top of my head)

Classic Rock 16-02-2004, 15:07 What % chance is there of the links between one product and something else affecting you is there? A tiny minute one!
We are probably more unhealthy sitting at our computers, picking up germs floating around the screens and walking home in a polluted city.
Personally, im more worried about consuming a chemical called "aspartame" although there isnt much concrete proof about what damage it causes, When i was in america sweetner packets which contain aspartame have MASSIVE health warnings on proclaiming that Certain sweetners cause cancer etc.
fnkysknky 16-02-2004, 15:19 RPG, check this site for more info. on artificial sweetners but it seems it's not as bad as you may have feared :)

Moon Maiden 16-02-2004, 16:24 RPG - I have a nice full page article from a pagan parenting magazine about Aspartame. We now check ALL out pops for the stuff and try out best to avoid it in other foods. The list of associated illness' is sickening. It has been banned elsewhere and there is a campaign to have it banned here too!
Interestingly enough the aspartame also acompanies Phenyneline (sp?) which can cause hyperactivity in children.

The truth is VERY sketchy about it, so its just better off to avoid it where possible than consume lots of it.
Meh, more government scare stories IMO, you won't be able to use owt by the time they've done cos there'll be so many warnings about don't use this, don't use that. don't use the friggin' other
Well, the recent scares about antiperspirants/deodourants were not about aluminium, but about another chemical found in less than 5% of such products.
Yes, the theory of blocking your pores doesn't sound very good, but in reality, it's not alminium metal that is being used, so it's natural toxic effects are not an issue (it is merely alminium oxide, not soluble in water).
