View Full Version : Do you own a 'good coat'?

I think this calls for a new thread....

It's very noticable that in there was a time when eveybody had a 'good coat', knew how to 'wrap up warm', and understood that you really could 'catch your death' of cold.

In this 'centrally heated', 'car travelling', 'global warming' environment that we all now live in, I suspect that there are people who believe all of the phrases in the above paragraph were only ever invented for Dickens novels.

I wonder how the parents of that 17 year old who froze to death on his way home from a night out last year cope?

Edit: new thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72639)

I was reading this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72487) and was just wondering.... How many people these days own a 'good coat'?

For those of you who are too young to understand what this item might be, it's a coat that reaches at least down to your knees, is warm, and is presentable enough to wear on a night out.

If you don't own one, what do you wear when it snows?

Yes I've just spent nearly £100 for a decent coat this year and I'm sooo glad I did!

It'd be no good as a dressy coat as it's Helly Hansen and more a hiking style coat but I'm one of those nutters that won't wear a coat to go for a night out anyway  :D

Being a bit of a skier I just break out my last ski jacket and walk around all toasty.

I also have a nice big 3/4 length coat that goes well with scarf and gloves.

So on the whole I have two ... well three if you count the huge duffle coat I have ... can you tell I like coats?

I can't really afford a massive warm coat - there are some ace ones about in the shops but they're all approaching 100 quid!

But I have two cheapo ones and I wear them with cardigans underneath and wooly gloves and a hat and scarf and two pairs of socks so yep, I'm all toasty!

I actually own a number of coats, including 2 'good' ones and a very nice cashmere one but haven't worn any of them in a very, very long time, with the exception of last Friday, when I decided that it would be a good idea to put a coat on, having seen the layer of ice on the car.

I put on my shortest, lightest coat, and as soon as the car was warm enough to blow out hot air I was too hot and took the thing off again. It's been abandoned in the car ever since.

I'm the one who voted that I don't need one! It's called the menopause, and when it snows I put a jumper on, and I sleep with a 3-tog quilt and the window open.

I did put the central heating on for a couple of hours in the evening though this week, so that means that the world might finally be getting cold enough for me.

I can't afford one since kblade spent loads of dosh on hers :suspect:

I'll be using the same Reebok 'bomber' jacket i've been using for the last 9 years this winter :(

Waits for loads of sympathy.....

I fully respect the weather nowadays. One night on New Years Eve it snowed, either 97 going into 98, or was it 96 going ito 97? Anyways I was drunk and got escorted out of a club for being sick :gag: .

Obviously no Taxi driver in their right mind was going to take me home, so I had to endure a 5 mile walk in sub-zero temperatures, in only jeans and a thinish jumper!!!

About 3 miles from home I honestly thought I was going to die, it got scary. I was so cold by now and because of the snow there was noone around.

Luckily I managed to complete the 3 or so miles, and when I did get home I was so cold, i'd sobered up. I got in a hot bath but I still couldn't warm myself up. In the end I had to go to bed with loads of lairs of clothes on, under 2 continental quilts, the central heating on and a hot water bottle with me, which I manged to find out! I was still in bed shivering for the night.

Of course I asumed by now, that I may have been suffering a form of hypothermia but if there is a God, then he allowed me through this. Of course I learnt my lesson and now I never leave the house without sufficient clothing.

Respect the weather, thats my advice! If its cold take a coat, if its hot take a drink.

Is there some sort of ryming saing for that advice?

Don't need one of these good coats, I'm 24 for Gods sake. Just need a normal one unless it gets really cold like -10.

You are not going to catch your death when your young unless you a re prepared to spend long periods of time sitting still in the cold.

Old people seem to wear these coats in July however, i'm a little curious to why?

I don't have a coat at all, let alone a "good coat", nor do I want one:).

I have a nice big toasty warm coat - as a student my mum bought it for me, she definitly feels guilty about me being cold!

But if ur not lucky enough to have one, just do what lots of people do, and put another jump/another pair of trousers/another pair of gloves... etc on!

I much prefer layers nowadays, if you get too warm you can at least remove one layer. You can't do that with a big coat.

Amount of times I've worn 2 hoodies and a trenchcoat are few and far between though, I've never been THAT cold.

I have 2 knee length nice coats. One in black and one in grey.
I was looking to replace my nearly ankle length overcoat this year, but they seem to be out of fashion, so settled on a ted baker knee length. Not quite as good (you can't stick your hands in the pocket and wrap it around yourself), but it's warm.
I also have my snowboarding jacket, although I don't normally wear that unless i'm boarding.
If it's not quite so cold, i'll wear a jumper and my leather jacket.

I just got a nice scarf for my bday though, and I have several pairs of good gloves.

And in my car I keep an old fleece and a waterproof, as i don't put a coat on if i'm not expecting to be outside for long.

I have one in dark grey, Hugo Boss don't ask how much but I love it. Really cosy and warm but only for best! Well I might relegate it to a lower category as it is about 6 years old now.

Also have a quilted green one with a brown corduroy collar which I think makes me look a bit European.

Got one last year Paramo, which is very light but also lovely and warm, it's sort of fleecy/velour yet claims to be sort of waterproof.

My work coat was an absolute steal, £20 from Makro, it's waterproof like a thick mac. Looks great and I've had my money out of it.

This years look however is a Green cord jacket big enough to go over scarf & jumper etc.

As with anything, some people follow fashion, others set it.

Every body HAD to have a "GOOD COAT" as my mom always said back when......... not just a warm coat, it was called a "Good Coat" althought i wouldn't want to own a "Good Coat"
now a days, don't think i could drive in a thick coat and scarf now , not with all the seat belt thingies accross me and the heat blasting............snow boots i can manage with driving but a "Good Coat" no!

I have several coats and jackets. When it is really cold I usually wear my Stein motorcycle jacket which is made of very thick leather and has a foil thermal lining. It keeps me warm at motorways speeds and it certainly keeps me warm when I'm walking down to the pub.

yep got a lovely £60 (was reduced!) coat from Debenhams which is all toasty warm, but as that's really nice I bought a new one for dog walking which is also nice and warm but doesn't look as good and was only £15 - really good value though! Thanks Primark!

My puppy's also got a nice toasty coat (it just so happens to match mine which is quite embarassing!) as she has a cold from doggy walking! lol

I hate being cold and have to wrap up warm all the time!

I used to have a dark navy Crombie overcoat, - but gave it away once I realised I wasn't going to make it in the 'city' ;)

Now have to rely on a couple of hip-length padded jackets or my BT 'arctic clothing' coat which is bright orange and worn only when I have to take the dog out in a blizzard.

Also have a Russian style hat with ear flaps - I'm sure the dog sniggers :hihi: when I put that on.

I do have a best warm coat these days. But in the year of the deep snow which put Sheffield out of action for several days back in the early Nineties, I would happily go around wearing a heavy Aran cardigan on top of several layers of woollies and feeling like overdone toast.

I had a brown leather sheepskin flying jacket for the last few years (used to look great with the hat) :)

Anyway, it was actually too warm so I sold it on ebay last year and got a good deal on a duck feather and down jacket (also on ebay)

If the winter is going to be as cold as people are predicting, I might be wishing I had my flying jacket back :(

Anyone with a good enough memory to point out that I don't eat meat or fowl but am happy enough to wear the dead remains gets a virtual poke in the eye :suspect: :hihi:

Well I bought a lovely long black DKNY coat last year and it will do another season for sure.

Could really do with accessorizing it; perhaps some nice Hugo Boss gloves and scarf. Anyone? (Christmas just round the corner and all?)

My coat is reasonably good/warm, I reckon. It's past the knee as well (it's better than the coat I had before).
