Hi,

I have heard that if you have a Rotherham postcode and have a BMI of over 30 your doctors can refer you to receive ... free gym, dietitian, councelling etc at their Institute for Obesity - the thinking is to try and get local resisdents more healthy and therefore becoming a less of a burden on their NHS resources.... do Sheffield run a similar scheme?

doctor's can do a referal for gym in any area and everyone has the right to be refered to a dietitian on the basis of having a bmi above a set figure cant say for sure about counciling but should imagine its a very over stretched area as it is within mental health.

Yes Ting-Tong. It's just like a prescription I suppose and would be an alternative to other obesity medication that can be prescribed, just without all the vile side effects and so much more fun!!! lol.
It is a growing scheme, if you speak to your GP and they do not currently offer the scheme, but would be interested in finding out more about it and the NHS trial, along with costings vs savings vs effectiveness etc, then there are GP packs that I could forward on so let me know.
It's such an amazing scheme and a massive leap forward in the NHS's approach to tackling overweight and obesity. Unlike a prescription for some tablets, it means that the crucial emotional side of weight loss can be addressed too.

Hope that all makes sense lol

just to add a referal for the gym is not free its at a reduced price, for example concord sports centre should be £6 a session for non members but with referal its £3 a session. sounds like slimming world would be a great option for anyone using the scheme thats on a tight budget though
