Thanks :) owdlad 20-11-2005, 20:21 Have a look here erino, see how busy it is in Times Square. http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/ richt100 20-11-2005, 20:21 Staten Island ferry, it's free and awesome views of the city. You will have a great time, it's amazing! Central Park is great. Debk 20-11-2005, 20:22 For Shopping Century 21 is a must (opposite Ground Zero) Then make sure you do the following: A trip on the Statten Island Ferry, Walk around Central Park, Basketball at Madison Square Gardens, Empire States Building, Visit Chinatown, walk accross Brooklyn Bridge. Eat, Eat shop & Eat I'm also going in the Spring (May) its my 2nd visit & I cant wait! You'll love it erino 20-11-2005, 20:27 Ah thanks for quick replies! We are staying just by Times Sq - shall I wave?? richt100 20-11-2005, 21:18 Diner breakfasts are excellent, pricey but well worth it emmie 21-11-2005, 03:03 i'm going in february so planning on going ice skating in the park. there's a couple of really good tour guides in the shops for not much money but the official new york website has some pretty good links too www.nyc.gov/ its my second visit too - once is just not enough!!!! Emilychee 21-11-2005, 08:44 I'd love to go, definatley gonna go in the next few years. Can anyone who's been recommend any accommodation? Prefably cheap but not grotty! tratty 21-11-2005, 09:35 Try the Comfort Inn in Manhattan....Nice and cheap Emilychee 21-11-2005, 11:36 Originally posted by tratty Try the Comfort Inn in Manhattan....Nice and cheap Thanks for the tip DaBouncer 21-11-2005, 11:44 I'm off to NYC soon and have been many times before. The natural history museum is pretty good and is the already mentioned FREE staten island ferry (you go past Statue of Liberty too). There are helicopter rides you can book in advance that give you an amazing view of the city skyline. Central park is amazing inside this concrete jungle so well worth a look. Maybe take in a Broadway show or book advance free tickets to see a recording of The Late Show with David Letterman or something. Obviously Empire states building is something to see as well as Bloomingdales (just a big department store though). Dining in NYC is amazing with a lot of great restaurants. You'll have a great time, good luck ;) Incidentally we're staying atthe Grand Hyatt Hotel which is meant to be wonderful. We have previously stayed at The Wellington Hotel which is also decent but not as nice as the Grand Hyatt. dinp 21-11-2005, 12:21 I'll second what everyone else has said, but also go on the Downtown Loop tour bus. If you love shopping, its gotta be Macys (nr the Empire State). If you want to be in the centre of it all, stay at the Edison Hotel, just off Times Square. twichibi 21-11-2005, 12:35 I stayed in Hotel Pennsylvania (http://www.all-hotels.com/xbook/servlet/hotel-details?hotl_id=150544). It's bang opposite Madison Square Gardens and just next to Macy's and also a 5 minute walk away from the Empire State. It's location is superb, rooms are quite good, nothing spectacular but it's just somewhere to get your head down at night :) Things to see/do: Rockafella Centre Grand Central Station Ice Skating in Central Park Wall Street Ground Zero Statue of Liberty Chrysler Building Trump Towers Plus what the others have mention.... have fun ;) poppins 21-11-2005, 12:48 I was in NY city yesterday, i don't care for it at all, but we had a chance to go to see the Christamas show at Rockerfeller Center, it was spectacular............first 15 min we were given 3D glasses WOW! amazing, also it was great to see they hadn't taken religion out of Christmas. The manger scenes were great, live camels and donkeys on the stage, ending with a short story of Jesus. Well just thought i would brag for a bit, sorry ! Anyhow google NYC Insider thats should be helpful for visiters. Lea1979 21-11-2005, 13:22 My favourite city in the whole world !! (and yes I have been to a few :D ) All ideas suggested are recommended by me too. I've been four times now and still there is so much I want to see - and I haven't even made it out of Manhatten yet ! Also try to walk everywhere - the best way to see the city !!Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge - amazing views of the City from there. Top tip - if you've not got your heart set on a particular broadway show, buy your tickets on the day from the place in the middle of Times Square, you can't miss it - its a big red and white thing with the word TICKETS slapped all over it :P You will be able to get at least 50% off and when tickets RRP for well over $100 - its definately worth it. Hope you have an amazing time! erino 21-11-2005, 18:09 Originally posted by poppins I was in NY city yesterday, i don't care for it at all, but we had a chance to go to see the Christamas show at Rockerfeller Center, it was spectacular............first 15 min we were given 3D glasses WOW! amazing, also it was great to see they hadn't taken religion out of Christmas. Hi Poppins, Thanks, isn't it strange that you are so close and didn't enjoy, yet all the posts either side are sooooo excited bout NYC - I must admit, it will be my second visit ( the first was a flying one though) and I immediately fell in love with what I saw/felt. I found the people so friendly for such a busy place - ten times more than in London. That show sounds great you lucky thing.... us lot here in Sheffield are very very envious!!! Now for my brag of the day... I will be ending my trip to NY by sailing home on the QM2 ooooh!!! ( with an outside cabin!!) Thanks everyone for your bits of info - pm your addresses and I will postcard you ha ha! allylou 21-11-2005, 18:28 I was in NY this time last year and the highlight of my stay had to be my helicopter trip out over the statue of liberty - it was so exciting and it's only about £15 - well worth it! poppins 21-11-2005, 18:32 Originally posted by erino Hi Poppins, Thanks, isn't it strange that you are so close and didn't enjoy, yet all the posts either side are sooooo excited bout NYC - I must admit, it will be my second visit ( the first was a flying one though) and I immediately fell in love with what I saw/felt. There's a boat trip you can get round manhattan - great value - leaves from the port authority building. Go to the hall at grand central station and experience the subway. Go and watch the Yankees play baseball- great atmosphere visit the Guggenheim and the New York Museum of Modern Art - weird! go and see a play in the open air theatre in central park.. Go to a jazz club in "the village" loads to do - spent a summer in new york in 1986 - great city to wander in.. recommend the rough guides littleidea 21-11-2005, 20:06 New York's a great place, all the above are highly recommended. Also check out Chinatown and Greenwich village, both are great places to wander round and there's a freak show on Coney Island that's good for a laugh. Make sure you do the Empire State first thing in the morning or you'll have to queue for ages. Have a fab time. jpow112 21-11-2005, 21:45 when you walk around take care to look up- there are amazing architectural details in the buildings- v easy to miss - not just the classic buildings - empire state, chrysler etc - loads of others too - amazing buildings |
