View Full Version : Fire at meadowhall
damo4real 14-02-2004, 20:51 as i finished work tonight at 7 i could hear sirens approaching fast i looked towards sainsburrys 3 fire engines and the big ladder engine was hurtling towards the oasis food court at a rapid rate so me bieng me i went over to find out what was happening everyone had been evacutated from the cinema and surrounding buildings due to a popcorn machine catching fire just thought i'd let you all know lol
Manhattanman 15-02-2004, 08:32 i have been to medowhall for years now and in these past few weeks thre have been more fire drills than ever bfore. the alarms go off, the smoke screens come down and the extractor fans come on. as soon as this happens the entire power of the warner bros cinemas cuts out and all the lights at the entrance go off. its bizare!
SatanInHeels 15-02-2004, 10:20 hehe. glad i worked early yesterday then.. cause if they decide to evacuate people from sainsburys, scary. thats the only way to put it i think

I don't want to perpetuate the old 'body bags at Meadowhall' urban myth but persumably all major shopping centres will be on a list of potential terrorist targets.
I guess during these times of heightened security threats each target will have had to review and practice its evacuation procedures on a more regular basis.
That could possibly have something to do with it.
jenhoppy 15-02-2004, 16:57 My mate went yesterday to go to the pics with her hubby 4 valentines night.Apparently some idiot had set a fire in the cinema!!very bright ehh?Ruined their night out they had to have a refund and go home-great eh??!

Especially ones adjacent to the major UK road artery where it passes over a structurally weak viaduct!

Hardly an accident though was it.Just some braindead idiot playing a prank. What a sad act whoever it was, thats what i say!!
Could have been nasty if undetected though i suppose.

How do you know it was done deliberately? Has anyone been charged?

razoreddie 16-02-2004, 21:47 They were never any body bags...the items thought to be were the new Marks & Spencer uniforms at the time.

Ehhh?
I read in the star last night that it was a popcorn machine that caught fire and the person who was waiting for refreshments grabbed an extinguisher and got it under control!!! Guilty party? Nah just a dodgy machine!

The guilty party would be the staff for not watching it.
A popcorn maker uses oil, so just like a chip pan if its left unattened while on will overheat and combust.
Could have been serious as a lot of smoke would have been produced, hence evacuation, too many smaoke detectors activated would sound the alarms.
As for the amount of engines this would be becuase ofthe size of the building, wouldn't be sursrised if meadowhall isn;t a 10 engine mininum call out from sheffield and rotherham, then more if needed. Prob at least 3-5 ambulances as well, as a minumum.
I know when I lived in a block of flats that was a 3 engine and one ambulance call out, every time a fire happened, even a chip pan fire.
